Kindle edition is not good quality

My boyfriend suggested that I read this book since I am learning German and it is a relatively easy read. The original book (in hardcover/paperback) contains lots of illustrations and handwritten text, which give it an endearing quality. However, the handwritten text simply does not translate well on a Kindle version AT ALL. The text is grainy and difficult to read, and you can't highlight any of the text (which is something I wanted since I have a German-English translation dictionary on my Kindle). I had to return the book.
On the other hand, I have heard great things about the story itself, so maybe I will get myself the real book version someday.
