Jordan Matter's Uncovered is a book of portraits and personal statements from over 80 brave women, who posed bare-breasted for the project in public locations across New York City.
In her foreword, author Susan Seligson states what all men and women already know: 'Breasts are an inexplicably big deal.' Whether hidden under layers of clothing, half-revealed in the service of fashion (and flirtation) or laid brazenly bare, breasts matter. They demand response, provoke moral questions and force confrontation with the very notion of taboo.
Over a period of six years, Jordan Matter photographed women bare-breasted in New York City. They varied in terms of age, education and profession. Every one was a volunteer. Every subject faced reactions to her decision to defy convention, and many confronted feelings of shame and inadequacy. But after the shoots, the women were unexpectedly euphoric—and Matter wondered just what he had uncovered.
Many of the women agreed to interviews or wrote their own texts for this collection, revealing their journeys toward self-acceptance. The result is a remarkable chorus of shared experience, secret fears, optimism and wisdom. Uncovered celebrates the controversial female body. But it also honors the individual women who were willing to confront their culture and themselves. These are their images and their stories, in their own words.

About the Author
Jordan Matter is a portrait photographer in New York City. His work has been exhibited at the Art Mine Gallery in Seattle and Foley Gallery in Manhattan. Uncovered has been featured on The Today Show (NBC), Countdown with Keith Olbermann (MSNBC), the BBC (UK), Sex-TV (Canada), WROC-TV, NY1 News, CBS Radio and WOR Radio. Print coverage includes the NY Daily News, Time Out New York, and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Matter lives in New York with his wife, Lauren, and their son, Hudson.

Liberating and poignantly realistic...

My husband and I ordered a copy of "Uncovered" back in January 2009. We've been absolutely thrilled with it! This book deserves a lot of raving about...
Like a good movie, "Uncovered" brought out understanding and emotion that welled up from deep within. I could relate to many women in the book... and felt compassion for those whose experience I did not know. Every woman who volunteered for this project was beautiful... every body, every breast, every spoken word was a poignant reality of how women look, think, and feel. Matter is an exceptional photographer to capture the essence of all women in his shots. I find myself wanting to share this book with everyone I know. I believe there needs to be a shift in what we teach our children, what we relay to others about themselves and their bodies... This book is positive in every way and filled with much wisdom.
I admire the volunteers who stepped forward to be photographed and express their personal thoughts and views. I commend Jordan Matter for his exemplary work. "Uncovered" will proudly be displayed in our home and hopefully, it will prompt interesting and positive conversation amongst family and friends.

Amazing photos! Wonderful book!

I was first introduced to "Uncovered" when a friend of mine sent me a link to Jordan Matter's website a couple years ago. The photographs are beautiful, no doubt, but it's the women that are so great. Their courage to not only be photographed, but to share such personal stories, inspires me! I was so excited to finally have it in print. As a nursing mom, I've come to realize just how hung up our society is with nudity. This book has a permanent place in my living room. I want my children to grow up seeing that we are all unique and beautiful. "Uncovered" is a true testament to that!

Touching testimonials...beautiful photography

"Uncovered" is a wonderfully well-put-together collection of words of wisdom and photographic celebrations of life. The testimonials and photographs in Matter's book are all so very touching and beautiful in their own, individual ways. Each page, through photos and/or words, tells a unique story of struggle and determination to break from family, religious, and societal molds of shame, and learn to love one's own self and body - to see and appreciate the beauty of Who We Really Are.
Enter "Uncovered" with caution, for as you journey through this book, you just may exit a more enlightened soul. And be careful not to let a tear drip upon the pages...
