I just got back from Romania and whilst this book was helpful in very specific situations, it takes longer than reasonable to work. Let's say that you want to know what "mere" is. You can't look that up. You need to go to the food section and go through every category looking for it. If it's there, it'll tell you apple. If not, you're out of luck. "Mare", by the way, is seafood. The words are really close but in pages apart, which is less than ideal.
It did work for asking for stamps at the post office. I'm sure I was grammatically incorrect, but I was able to ask for stamps to send a postcard. Of course, that isn't one of the phrases in the book. I had to cobble it together from two sentences listed and the word for stamps. Why a travel phrasebook wouldn't just have, "May I have stamps to mail postcards?".... Are there really that many people going to the special package post office -- points to the book for explaining that one would need to do that for a package -- to mail things? A goodly number of the words and phrases you'll need are in here, just not in a way that's logical for how life tends to work. They need to actually shadow someone trying to get by to see what phrases one DOES want to say, like "Is the far or the near platform #1?" (The peron aren't labeled so just being told the number is not really helpful.)
I studied Romanian on my own using a CD set purchased on Amazon and LiveMocha online and simply googling the conjugation of a few verbs. I only had two months for this and I freely admit I didn't put in nearly enough time, but that more than the phrasebook got me by. It's amazing how often I used numbers! Memorize the numbers 1-10. It's in the book, just learn them by rote as you would "thank you" and "good day" and "please".
Other than that, the size of the book is perfect. It fits in a coat pocket easily and is light. I purchased an actual English-Romanian/Romanian-English dictionary while I was there for about 20RON. It's too large to lug around, but will be much more helpful for actually learning the language. This book is more of an in-a-pinch just to be understood. I'd give it 3-1/2 stars out of five.

Looks Terrific

I'll update this review as soon as I've spent some more time with this book, but I wanted to respond to an earlier commenter now, lest others be deterred from buying this book because of his/her comment.
Yes, the book does technically say to pronounce buna as "booner," but if you look in their pronunciation guide, they say that you don't pronounce the "r"; they're just using the r to signal that it's the same sound as the "er" in "teacher" without pronouncing the "r". Maybe it's a somewhat confusing way to signify that, but it's not incorrect.
And in the book's defense, not only does it seem correct on that point, but it looks like an exceedingly pretty and nicely put together book (the first Romanian language book I've found that I can say that about) and it seems to hit directly at words and phrases you actually need and will actually use in real life. I want to know the language better than this book alone will teach it to me, but this book looks like it will be a wonderful refresher for me after more in-depth, grammar-focused Romanian language books, and one that can help me better to communicate with people in actual Romanian. Also, it's a nice pocket-sized book that I can carry around with me for when I have a down minute, and learn some highly targeted words and phrases.
