Look no further
By David T. Johnson
I spent the likes of three days trying to find a book that had a realistic application towards ATM and SONET/SDH technology. Practically by mistake I got lucky and found this one, (via the local bookstore). Not to say that others don't share the same depth, it's just that this one has a format that flows very nicely and is very well organized in thought and technolgy. It also seems to have the best collection of graphics, especially for understanding the bigger picture of device connectivity. It also provides a great history as to how the industry and need for this technology evolved, making it an ideal book for sales and marketing personnel. However, the author describes it as a post-graduate level book. So it is very specific, but its very easy to understand and flows in a logical manner. I can't imagine you would be disappointed. Feel free to write me if you have specific questions about this book.

coverage of different communications technologies
By J
This book comes as a handy reference when you need to look up stuff quickly. For instance if you want to check out K1 K2 bytes in a SONET frame and what they do, you can easily find it in this book. In a similar way it covers a broad range of topics, such as ATM, Frame Relay, SONET/SDH, digital hierarchy, xDSL etc.
Its not a definative guide since it does not cover any theoretical aspects of the technologies but still a good everyday reference with tons of pages.

Brooke just wants to forget. About the weird stuff that’s going on with her family. About the fact that her best friend moved away right before their senior year. About the fact that lately, she hasn’t been able to feel much of anything.

And that’s what Aiden helps her to do -- forget. So what if he’s kind of… unavailable? Everyone needs a bad boy, right?

Ry just wants to be with Brooke. He had a chance a long time ago, and he’s been pining for her ever since. And when he sees her with Aiden, he decides that some things have been kept secret long enough…

Told from both Brooke and Ry’s point of view, AT THE PARTY is a romantic novella from Lauren Barnholdt, author of TWO-WAY STRET and ONE NIGHT THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Telling secrets

really good, but incredibly too short. it felt very rushed and like the whole book took place in an hour.

worst book ever
By TEAM FUENTES
I downloaded this book and was really happy with the beginning, but it was way too short and that really made this book suck for me when it was only one night. It could have been much better with more detail and specifics and more romance than was told. But overall, this book sucked, really disappointed

The first publication of Drama of Being a Child and of this 1997 edition are separated by fifteen years of experience - the author's experience with her own self-therapy and with other recent therapy methods, and finally her knowledge of the life histories of the several thousand readers who have written to her. The research into childhood she has undertaken in this period has led to further fine-tuning of her earlier findings, as is ocumented and illustrated here with an abundance of examples. The author examines the consequences of repression at personal and social levels, the causes of the physical and psychological harm done to children and how this can be prevented, and finally the new methods at our disposal for dealing with the consequences of infant traumas.

Alice Miller lives in France. For more than twenty years she taught and practised psychoanalysis. In 1973, due to her spontaneous painting she discovered her childhood history. This book was a life changer for me... It gave me hope when all was lost.
By WanderingK1ng
This was the first book that I've ever read that told me what I felt and experienced is real and meaningful. I grew up in a very dysfunctional family as most do these days, I have been struggling for many years with depression, thoughts of suicide, and emptiness. Until I discovered Alice Miller and her wonderful work. She details the trauma that childhoods can cause, often unintentionally, that carry into our adult lives shaping who we are.

What a relief when Alice was describing feelings and experiences. It's like she was seeing through the eyes of my childhood! What a moment! I wept with tears of joy. The feeling of simply being seen, felt, and validated is one that cannot be put into words. This book gave me the hope and courage to press on. Thanks to Alice Miller, and her work upon the planet, I can happily move forward reconnecting with the lost self within. What a gift!

Please honor yourself by picking up this book. Anyone who struggles with their life and pain, this book could a real life changer!

Excellent book!
By Hsiao Yu Chen
I just finished reading the book and am still in the process of digesting it. Frequently, the book pin points my life with shocking accuracy. I won't be discussing the content because it's quite heavy. This books seems to be aiming at psychologists because each part has a chapter for therapists. It also has a European color, especially German. Outside of these parts, I felt that the book was talking directly to me.

I like the condensed quality of the book. Written in the 80s, when each sentence is to be digested. Books published today generally have larger volumes of repetitive concepts. I'd much prefer to read and digest one inspirational sentence at a time, and revisit frequently.

update:

Since Alice Miller has passed away, her website no longer gets updated with new emails from readers, I'll write down some of the awakenings I found reading the book. A lot of buried memories started to come back and a lot of my strange behaviors are starting to make sense. They all rooted in childhood.

- I have a life long yearning for freedom that I never could explain.
- I have impossibly high standards for myself in terms of achievements and strength. I can't stand to be anywhere near the weak or the stupid.
- I don't have non-productive hobbies. My activities are all "useful." e.g. I don't read fictions.
- I have an extraordinary high tolerance for pain starting from early childhood. I remember as a pre-teen I fell playing basketball and got a patch of bloody road rash on my knee. I vividly remember being terrified because I ripped my brand new jeans, not because of the blood and open wound. Also, I never understood why people are afraid of dentists.
- I don't express any emotions, and most of the time I don't experience any emotions. Even in extreme circumstances. I never thought much of it until somebody told me that it isn't normal.
- Everything I do is, at the most basic level, a defensive mechanism. I know for years that I'm a master defender, which means I can un-arm most people within a minute or two, with all sorts of tactics, charm, humor, charisma, etc, etc. But I stay away from making connections with people.
- My entire adult dating life has been plaque with fear and anger of women. and severe depression.

Memories are starting to come in. New dreams, too. I started to realize how unreasonable my mother was when she demanded me not to cough nor sneeze when I was sick as a child, or she would beat me up. I never had a sick day until I went to boarding school at 16. I remember how I was proud of my being able to control my body to not cough or sneeze. It never occurred to me until now that this was an inhumane demand from my mother. I also started to realize how unreasonable and irresponsible she was to blame me for her bad marriage.

More and more facts are starting to flow from my deep subconscious. I am very thankful that I found this book. Thank you, Alice Miller, wherever you are.

This book shows the way to get well from lifelong depression.
By Puddleducks
One of the most helpful books I've ever read, for people suffering from depression and anxiety. Alice Miller doesn't play around, or mince words when she explains in no uncertain terms, how and why just about anyone with lifelong depression got that way. This book has such insight and wisdom, that people in their twenties just might not "get it"--I know I didn't, and neither did one of my friends. But after running into all kinds of walls, in terms of trying to get well, I rediscovered this book and found that it describes the one and only way to get well, and it's not a quick fix, and it's not something a person can do without emotions. It's a journey. This is one of the few books to show the map to the treasure--the treasure being wellness, and getting rid of the false self and discovering one's true self.

About the Author
Betsalel Philip Edwards was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1968. A graduate of Boston University, he studied music composition, and then religion under Elie Wiesel and Herbert Mason. Moving to Israel in 1994, he attended Bar-Ilan University, studying music composition and Jewish ethnomusicology. His first taste of the depth and wisdom of Hasidism came from the late great Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, of blessed memory. He feels that he has no merits or awards of any consequence other than the privilege of raising a family and studying the Torah in Jerusalem. The translation of the Mei HaShiloach is his first publication.

Good Find
By jason hirsch
The Mei Ha'Shiloach is not a relatively popular commentary when compared to those commentaries written by other Chassidic masters. It was therefore pleasantly surprising to find an English translation. The translator (Edwards) sticks to a fairly literal translation of the text without offering a whole lot of explanation into the author's meaning. This is great for the passages in which The Iszbitzer (author of original) provides more expansive comment. For some of the passages that are somewhat esoteric or cryptic almost, the reader would have been served by some expansion by the translator. That said, Edwards did a fine job in bringing this hard-to-find but important commentary to the public. He does go out of his way to break the language down so that the comments are understandable by even the uninitiated without going so far as to alienate more experienced readers.
Finally, Edwards does provide some welcome historical context relating to The Iszbitzer in which he refers the reader to the translation of the book's original forward (also provided). Additional objective historical detail would have good inasmuch as that forward was written by the author's own grandson. But that's just being picky. All in all, this is a good addition to one's library.

The holy Ishbitzer in English - Gevalt
By Shalom Freedman
Bezalel Edwards has done a service to the entire Torah- loving- through - English - primarily world by translating the Mei Hashiloach into English. This is one of the great Hasidic commentaries on the Torah. Many are those who champion it and find in it the deepest of Torah insights. The Ishbitzer in some ways has a psychological acuity which seems to speak most strongly to those of the present generation. Of course Rav Shlomo Carlebach repeatedly learned from and taught Ishbitz. So too did one of his greatest pupils , the Holy Teacher David Hertzberg whose profound insights into the Ishbitz were part of the Torah given over in his own sefer ' Pri Mayim Chayim' Bezalel Edwards shows a good command of the text. One would like very much however to see this translation printed with the original text alongside, a dual- language volume. Perhaps some enterprising publisher in the world of Judaica could start bringing out such dual- language volumes. Another candidate for this would be the Ishbitzer's great teacher, the Kotzker.Somehow for certain readers anyway the dual- language works add a dimension to our learning which having the text in the language of translation alone does not.

But again Yishar Koach to Bezalel Edwards on this excellent work.

White Space: Book One of The Dark Passages, by Ilsa J. Bick

New in paperback! From Ilsa J. Bick--the critically acclaimed author of The Ashes Trilogy--comes the first title in a two-book, young adult series about blurred reality in the tradition of Memento and Inception. This thrilling and scary young adult novel is about blurred reality where characters in a story find that a deadly and horrifying world exists in the space between the written lines.

Seventeen-year-old Emma Lindsay has problems: a head full of metal, no parents, a crazy artist for a guardian whom a stroke has turned into a vegetable, and all those times when she blinks away, dropping into other lives so ghostly and surreal it's as if the story of her life bleeds into theirs. But one thing Emma has never doubted is that she's real.

Then she writes "White Space," a story about these kids stranded in a spooky house during a blizzard. Unfortunately, "White Space" turns out to be a dead ringer for part of an unfinished novel by a long-dead writer. The manuscript, which she's never seen, is a loopy Matrix meets Inkheart story in which characters fall out of different books and jump off the page. When Emma blinks, she might be doing the same and, before long, she's dropped into the very story she thought she'd written. Trapped in a weird, snow-choked valley, Emma meets other kids with dark secrets and strange abilities: Eric, Casey, Bode, Rima, and a very special little girl, Lizzie. What they discover is that they--and Emma--may be nothing more than characters written into being from an alternative universe for a very specific purpose.

Now what they must uncover is why they've been brought to this place--a world between the lines where parallel realities are created and destroyed and nightmares are written--before someone pens their end.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—One of the marks of a classic horror story is the slow and insidious shifting of the rules within the tale's universe. Bick understands the power of this trope and uses it relentlessly in this sophisticated horror novel for older teens. A brilliant five-year-old watches her novelist father call horrors from a powerful mirror. A high school junior with static-filled gaps in her memory pens a horror tale, one that had already been written decades ago. A psychically gifted girl accepts a ride from a troubled but sweet boy. A marine and his younger brother head out on snowmobiles after accidentally killing their abusive father. Fleeing their separate nightmares, the cast assembles in a fog-bound, snow-filled valley from which there seems to be no escape. Lovecraft-inspired monsters inflict gruesome deaths and time and space are unreliable in this mind-bending narrative. Slowly, it's revealed that no one is quite who they thought they were, and the boundaries of this universe are definitely falling apart. Continuous references to fictional time and space travelers (The Matrix's Neo, A Wrinkle in Time's Meg Murray) add intricacy, leading characters to wonder if they themselves are made up. Bick is a master of the genre, balancing tension, terror, and tedium through repetition and fractured storytelling. White Space is filled with echoes of other horror stories, but the author manages to hold on to her own narrative voice, playing on readers' expectations through a series of reveals, some just predictable enough to inspire a false sense of security. The first of a series, it also can stand alone.—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

From Booklist
It’s an interesting premise: Emma Lindsayhas been called into Professor Kramer’s office to face his charge of plagiarism. She has written a short story virtually identical to portions of deceased author Frank McDermott’s unfinished novel, Satan’s Skin. Yet she has never seen the novel, which is stowed away in Edinburgh. How could she copy a portion of a novel she didn’t know existed? Is this yet another blink—a lapse in Emma’s daily routine that takes her into other realities, a possible side effect of the plates in her skull? With allusions to The Matrix, The Bell Jar, and The Shining, to name a few, Bick forces readers to face a complex question: Are Emma and others in the story simply characters in one or more books who somehow got trapped together in the white spaces between pages? Or are they real people? This is hardly an easy read. Bick pushes readers, moving between story lines and points of view with little uniting the disparate threads except Emma herself. With incessant violence and gore, this series starter is for the most hard-core connoisseurs of horror or world-shifting fiction. Grades 9-12. --Frances Bradburn

I was disappointed
By Tandie
White Space was terribly disappointing for me. It certainly didn't read like young adult fiction. The characters were the right age, but it was more like a super-complicated science fiction novel. I consider myself a fairly intelligent reader and I could barely follow the story. I found myself rereading pages, flipping back to reread whole chapters. There were so many different points of view, it made my head spin. New POVs were being introduced even in the last half of the book. The kicker? This book is almost 600 pages long!

This book is touted as being in the tradition of Memento and Inception. I had a huge problem swallowing all the main character's references to The Matrix. "Who do I think I am? Neo?" "Just like Keanu Reeves." There were at least 5 unnecessary allusions to The Matrix. I like that movie by the way. Apparently, so does the author. There were also mentions of Inkheart and Inception. Can you guess that this book is about alternate realities? What is real?

The first chapter hits the ground running into a world where panops, diddlyhumps, swoozels, arguses, & typhons exist. Words pop into being & you can't even guess at their meaning from the context of the sentence. There is no world building, no explaining. This chapter is from a precocious (smarter than her smart parents) five year old's point of view. Um, nope. The next chapter drops us into high school junior Emma's head. She blinks into other realities.

The story jumps all over the place and even when some of the characters meet, we still have no clue what's going on. It felt a lot like channel surfing the TV for hours. I know that the ending was supposed to blow my mind. I think maybe a hard core sci-fi lover might have thought it was clever. Maybe not. Part of the reason The Matrix and Inception were so cool was the amazing cinematography. After all those movie mentions, I think a more reasonable ending would've been that Emma is really a teenager who's watched The Matrix, Memento, & Inception so many times (and maybe partaken of mind altering drugs) that she thinks she's living out all those movies at once.

Bizarre,
By Sarah
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Egmont USA and Edelweisss.)
Lizzie lives in a world where things from the imagination can be pulled through the ‘Dark Passages’ (no I don’t know what that means), and into/onto the ‘White Space’ (Could be paper, but could be something else – again I’m not sure).
Lizzie’s father uses the Dark Passages when writing his books, and without Lizzie’s parents knowledge, Lizzie does too.
Emma is in a car with her friend Lily. She suffers from ‘blinks’ where she is transported to another world at times. Emma has a ‘blink’ whilst driving, and then a blizzard causes her to crash.
Emma is saved from the wreck of her van by a man named Eric, and his brother Casey, and then things really start getting weird.

So I’ve read this whole book, it’s taken me the best part of 10 hours, and I’m still not really sure what the hell was going on at all.

This book was just bizarre; all the way through I was wondering what the hell was going on, and whether I was actually supposed to know what the hell was going on. This book was just jumbled. There were parts from multiple different points of view, and they were all kind-of flung in there together, and it was so difficult to work out what was happening to who, and how that correlated with what was happening to other people.

We had this storyline about the white space and dark passages, but then we also had a story about a girl being run off the road in a blizzard, and it was very difficult to understand how these two stories went together. To top this all off, we had really bizarre things going on, and things that really belonged in a horror story – spooky things, creepy things, murder, blood, monsters etc.
This book reminded me of several books – between the lines – where characters in a book are really alive, the shining – because of the blood and monsters and stuff, and a book called burn bright – because this was kind-of trippy in places, and hard to know what was actually happening.

It’s really difficult to rate this book, because while I did enjoy it somewhat, and I made it through all 560 pages, it is still really difficult to know what the hell was going on, and what really happened, and who was even really real?! I mean, the whole thing was just so weird, and made so little sense, that I really still don’t even know what it’s about, which is just ridiculous after having read 560 pages.
The ending was then more of the same – weird, jumbled, unexplained, and I am still not sure what happened to be honest. I’m really not sure if I want to read any more books in this series, because I’m really beginning to think that this story will never be explained, which is seriously annoying.
Overall; weird, jumbled, strange, difficult to follow, and downright bizarre.
6 out of 10.

Best Book this Summer
By Sara Dawn
This book was much more than I expected. The summary was sort of vague, but I now understand that it could not have been summarized better without giving away important points. I would say it's a little bit like Lovecraft meets Inkheart. Well-written, suspenseful, exciting, original... I would recommend this book with no hesitation.

4 blue ribbons from Romance Junkies
By C. Dionne
Luke Callahan may be twenty-eight years old but that doesn't mean he's ready to marry - no matter how tempting the young woman may be. Sure his pa's been after him to court the neighboring rancher's daughter, Cassie, so that they could combine the ranches but he refuses to marry before he's good and ready - only he may not have much say in the matter...

Cassie Morgan has her heart and mind set on marrying Luke and if trapping him into marriage is the only way she can have him then so be it. With her pa and Luke's pa's blessing she sets about being caught in a compromising position with Luke which of course would lead to a shotgun wedding.

After fixing the fence posts that separate Callahan land from the Morgan's Luke opts to clean up in the neighbor's pond even though he knows he risks getting caught. He just never expected to find himself compromised by Cassie who joins him in the water - naked. Every attempt he makes to get her to get dressed and leave fails and then things get worse when he hears the click of a gun and Cassie's pa informs him that he's expected at Sunday dinner and there had better be a ring along with an offer of marriage. Luke is adamant that he will not be forced into a shot gun wedding.

Luke has strong feelings for Cassie and at some point he might have proposed on his own but this trickery is simply intolerable. However, since it looks like getting out of a marriage is impossible, Luke is going to dictate the terms. Will Luke discover that being engaged to Cassie isn't the worst thing that could happen - in fact it might be a blessing?

SHOTGUN WEDDING is a short sweet historical story that leaves the reader feeling good about this relationship right from the beginning. Luke and Cassie are a great couple but with Luke so dead set on remaining single he isn't prepared to admit to any real feelings for her. Luke's reaction to a shotgun wedding is exactly what I'd expect most men to feel but I loved how he goes about arranging it so that any marriage will be on his terms. Cia Leah brings this story to life with plenty of emotional context, sexual tension, and even a little humor.

A Short Primer on St. Augustine That's Well Worth Reading
By Amadeus
Just finished Dr. Taylor Marshall's new e-book "St Augustine in 50 Pages." It was a nice overview of the saint's life and work. As someone who's read Augustine's "Confessions" several times and the entire "City of God," I still learned quite a bit from Dr Marshall's short treatment. If you're completely unfamiliar with Augustine's work or if your a seasoned Augustine devotee, this book is worth checking out.

A lot of info in 50 pages! Wow.
By Steven R. McEvoy
This is the second volume by Taylor R. Marshall that I have read. I have also since attended two of his live webinars. I can highly recommend this book. Taylor really knows how to pack a lot of information into 50 pages. This book follows his immensely popular Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages: The Layman's Quick Guide to Thomism. Even though almost 900 years separated the two authors these in 50 pages books links them, their works and give good reasons for us to be studying them and going deeper. Marshall writes in a very engaging and easy to read style. To be honest I hit the end of the book and was surprised even knowing it was a short volume when I began. He presents the material in such a way that it does not seem like many academic writers, and as such is quickly becoming a favourite writer of mine.

The chapters in this book are:
Introduction
Who was Saint Augustine?
Augustine's Contributions
Augustine's Legacy
List of Books on Augustine for Beginners
The Writings of Augustine

Taylor states of Augustine that: "Augustine was great at writing and disputation. He kept the quill in his hand. His books and sermons reveal a man gifted for infusing heartfelt passion into theology so as to make it practical." And to be honest that is what Taylor himself is doing. This book can be a reminder for those of us who finished formal studies years ago, for the younger reader as a primer for a high school or first year university course. Or for anyone who wants to dip their toes in the pool of knowledge but be warned once you get the toes wet especially with an author like Taylor you will likely dive in.

This was a wonderful little read. And I do plan on going on and very soon reading more from Taylor R. Marshall. I can recommend this book and believe that it will spark a hunger and thirst for more knowledge. Give it a go you have nothing to lose and maybe a whole lot to gain. Well done Mr. Marshall well done.

Wikipedia is a better bet!
By Laureate
This pamphlet, besides not being quite 50 pages, is poorly edited with many omitted prepositions and being verbs. Furthermore, the author has repeated a whole paragraph twice on pages 31-32. Not much new material here that Wikipedia couldn't provide. Certainly not worth $15.
