About the Author
Yuri Shevchuk holds a Ph.D. in Germanic philology from Kyiv State University and taught Ukrainian at the Harvard Summer School from 1990-2010. He has been a lecturer of Ukrainian language and culture at Columbia University for over 10 years.

Your best choice for learning Ukrainian

I have been using this textbook to learn as much Ukrainian as possible before I go there this summer. As far as I can tell, this is the best Ukrainian textbook out there. Each chapter introduces a new grammar concept and then tests the students with tons of exercises. These exercises are exactly what a beginner needs in order to test himself. The website that goes along with the textbook includes the solutions to the exercises, as well as audio for most exercises, making the book excellent for self-learning. If this book were a Spanish, French or German textbook, the book would be sold for $150, the author would be rich and the students poor. Instead, the book is $30 and if you're interested in learning Ukrainian, you'd be silly not to buy it.

To compare, I have also used the other main Ukrainian textbook: Complete Ukrainian with Two Audio CDs. It is okay, but it doesn't have nearly enough exercises or audio for a student to test his understanding of the language.

The good:
The exercises are excellent.
The grammar tables at the end of the book are very helpful.
A Ukrainian - English/ English - Ukrainian dictionary is contained at the end of the textbook.
The online audio has hours and hours of people speaking Ukrainian to go along with the exercises.
And exercise key is included on the textbook's website, so a student can check whether he understands the material.

The not so good:
1 The order of in which grammar is introduced seems a little strange to me. Perhaps this ordering is necessary because Ukrainian is a very complex language for English speakers, but it was something that I found strange. Two examples:
A1. The past tense is introduced before the present tense, so a student learns many verbs -- thinking he's mastered them -- and then, when the present tense is introduced, the student must go back to those verbs and learn their present-tense conjugation pattern. This was frustrating for me.
A2. The singular and plural of different cases are learned in different chapters. If you want to learn how to say, "I hear my grandmother", go to Chapter 7, but if you want to learn how to say, "I hear my grandmothers", sorry, you have to wait until Chapter 14. Again, this may be necessary because of the complexity of Ukrainian grammar, so it's hard to blame the book.
2. The the voice of the person who introduces the exercises on the audio (I assume this is the author) is louder than the people who actually speak Ukrainian in the recording. I like to listen to and practice the audio while running. After Exercise 6.1 finishes, a new voice screams into my ears EXERCISE 6.2. SAY AND WRITE THE SENTENCES IN UKRAINIAN. Maybe I'm being too critical, but I figure I should mention this.
3. Some of the audio doesn't match the exercises exactly.
4. There isn't a sequel! Somebody needs to write an intermediate Ukrainian textbook -- I hope Dr. Shevchuk is the person to do it!

Good program

This is the best program for learning Ukrainian that I have found! Ukrainian is a very complex language - so no program will be easy or painless, but of all I've tried this one is the most complete. I have to go over the lessons a few times to be able to keep up with the speed of the audio - but once I do, I have it.

Genius

as a harpist trained outside the Suzuki school, I had never look at the Suzuki books. They seem to be perfect for teaching, introducing each skill one at a time. I think learning from these books would be much less overwhelming than most harpists find it to be, since skills like playing with 2 hands are so well separated from learning new fingering patterns. I have also found the book very useful as exercises when I want to concentrate on buffing up my form and techniques.

My kids have followed the Suzuki curriculum for several instruments. I think the Harp progression is probably the best organized in terms of cleanly adding skills one at a time for each song. I would recommend it to anyone learning harp -- child or adult, "Suzuki" or "traditional".

Great book! Good translation

Beowulf was a great book. I love how the original Old English text was on the left side so you can compare the different languages. It truly is amazing how much Old English has developed. However, because it was a translation, it was not as easy to understand because the grammar was somewhat convoluted.

questionable title, questionable character, but still fun

I liked this story. However, the author did change Mr. Abella's name to Mr. Milled and changed him to her. That annoys me without question. But the remainder fo the story was hot. Although, Andrew doesn't strike me as straight to begin with, so I am somewhat curious about the title.

Mediocre Book for Fans--OK for Kiyosaki Newbies

I have been a great fan of Kiyosaki for some years now, and have made good money following his principles, so I owe him a debt of gratitude. Also, I have read the greater part of his increasing panoply of books.

This book was quite disappointing. Like most of Kiyosaki's books, this one was filled with repetition. Now, I do subscribe to the theory that "repetition is the mother of learning," and so a bit of repetition to reinforce an important point is quite acceptable, and indeed beneficial.

But this book is full of mind-numbing repetition, and the content of its nearly 200 pages could easily have been boiled down to 50 pages.

There may be a clue as to the reason why this book was written on page 89 where the author says, "One of the benefits of being an author is that when I want a new liability [read: luxury item], I first write a book, like this one, and the royalties from the book pay for the liability."

That might indeed explain why this particular book was written.

For those who have already read Kiyosaki's books, especially the first three-- RDPD, Cashflow Quadrant, and Rich Dad's Guide to Investing-- this book would be quite superfluous. On the other hand for those totally new to Kiyosaki's work, this book may serve as a valuable primer.

Still, there are a few excellent "take-aways" from this book:

1) The world no longer runs on Money (a medium of exchange backed by real value--traditionally silver and gold, or other hard assets), but on Currencies (totally fictitious media of exchange based on debt and manipulation by central banks). Historically, every currency has eventually gone to its intrinsic value--ZERO. Therefore, it is essential to NEVER SAVE A CURRENCY, but to keep a currency moving, buying real assets which generate cash flow, or buying items with a real intrinsic value. This insight, mentioned in other Kiyosaki books as well, is an extremely valuable bit of information, and is the one big gem to take away.

2) The greatest "asset" in today's world of economic change and volatility is Financial Intelligence itself. Only by developing "Financial IQ," will one be able to weather the storms which are shaping up on the world economic horizon. And the time to get educated is RIGHT NOW!

3) Kiyosaki's grouping of the five types of Financial IQ is also worthwhile, and gives a workable template for developing and IMPLEMENTING a greater financial awareness: 1) Making more money; 2) Protecting your Money; 3) Budgeting your money (there are some unique insights in this one!); 4) Leveraging your money; 5) Improving your financial information.

All in all, this book is useful for Kiyosaki newbies, although even they may be put off by the repetition. I think long-time Kiyosaki fans may be disappointed.

Little new information - go back and read his other books

I was really disappointed by this book. There's some new (or at least new perspective for me) items, but they could probably be condensed down to a single chapter. But then Kiyosaki couldn't really sell a book of just 1 chapter, so instead, he drifts off topic (a lot), and wrote a lot of filler material.

I don't know what he repeats more often -- his relationship with Donald Trump, or how (in his opinion), going off the gold standard was a bad idea. Neither of which, by the way, increased my Financial IQ.

There is a lot of filler. There are stories about the Merchant Marines. About Vietnam. About his surfing wallet empire. Chapters and chapters and chapters of this -- maybe, if I was in the right mood, it might be interesting. But *so* much of this has nothing to do with Finanace.. I can't help avoid thinking that Kiyosaki wanted another to buy another Bentley, so he wrote this book to pay for it...

Oh, and there's several instances where he makes glaring math errors or logic errors. These further detract from thinking of this as a "finance" book.

Pick another book. I wish I had.

A Rushed Piece Of Work

I found this book to be a little rushed and not Robert's best effort. As I read this book it seemed to me he thought, perfect time to write a book and make some money. A line like this really supports that claim too, "One of the benefits of being an author is that when I want a new liability [read: luxury item], I first write a book, like this one, and the royalties from the book pay for the liability." I have to admit when I read that particular line I was a little ticked. Yes I know when he writes a book he makes a lot of money and can buy his luxuries however it came off as a shot at his fans. At this point, many people buy his things based on his brand. He mentions that in his book. He formed a great brand that is known to be quality, however this book is a letdown. It does have some good information but a lot of it is a repeat from his other books. This book could have truly either not been written or condensed to under 100 pages. If you never read a Rich Dad book, then you may love it. As for me, I have read better from the Rich Dad collection. This book could have been better if it was not rushed or written just to pay for his new luxury.
