Lowell Jay Arthur is a principal of Quantum Improvement, a software process and quality consulting firm. He has over 21 years of experience maintaining software in IBM, UNIX, and PC environments and is the author of many well-known books on software engineering. Ted Burns has been building software systems for over 13 years and is currently a member of the technical staff at Invesco Mutual Funds. He has an MS degree in computer science.

Well, *I* think it's a great book!

I don't understand all the negative reviews here. Perhaps they're expecting something else out of this book: intro to programming, or hello world or something. Yes, it's a fairly advanced book, but that's what I wanted in the first place! I am writing this review because I came to this page to buy another copy of this book: I keep wanting a copy at home for hacking on my Linux box!
Any basic tutorial can show you how to do basic if/then/else and loops and basic syntax rules. You need a book when you want to do something harder: mathematics, complicated scripts, etc. Best of all, it doesn't just cover Bourne and C shells: it also covers the Korn and Bourne Again shells (ksh & bash).
This is not one of those books that was hacked out in four weeks because Technology X just became hot and every book publisher on the planet is scrambling to spit out 1600-page shelf-benders. The authors have taken a lot of time to put together a truly useful book.
Books don't reach a fourth edition if they are so bad!

Worst UNIX shell programming book I've used

I really don't like to give products bad reviews.. but after countless times of trying to leverage this book in "real life" for examples, etc. I am left with nothing.

I don't know the history of the book but it seems more like a textbook rather than a decent Admin's bookshelf book. The examples are few and weak. There are very few "real" examples. The explainations are weak, etc.

Do yourself a favor and AT LEAST look in the book before you buy it. The "Nutshell UNIX" book has way better coverage of shell programming but it's too terse if you're a beginner. I don't know what book I'd recommend for beginning shell programming. But definitely not this one.

UPDATE: "Mastering Unix Shell Scripting" by Randal Michael is pretty decent. Lots of real and scalpable examples. KSH only though, although it *does* address different flavors of UNIX.

I went through a few different books before this one, including "Learning The Bash Shell" , which I found cryptic and incomplete at best. I have to say that I am at a loss as to why this book has gotten such negative reviews. I had no example problems, and the structure of the book really helps build on previous chapters. The approach is also extremely clear and pedagogic-- all of the concepts are clearly illustrated in examples in a clear context. Its the time-proven "if you want to do this... type this in" approach extremely conducive to make readers want to explore or on their own. Given the enormous volume of Unix books that fails to do so, I think this books deserves a little more credit.
I would say this is a good introduction to Unix shell programming. I would also get E.Q. Shells by Example.

Very Helpful

Recently I bought this book and immediately made some textual changes to my company website based upon the contents of this and "Hot Button Marketing" by Barry Feig. The two mixed together have already begun to pay dividends in terms of conversions of visitors into prospects which will lead to customers and/or partners.

The lessons I learned as I read some of the material:

1) You may believe you're using the right words to sell (as I did prior to reading over the book), but there are always improvements that can be made.

2) Have fun--if your current campaign isn't working as well as you'd like, tweak the copy by using some of the suggestions in this book to see if a different word sprinkled in here and there improves things. It's interesting to see what a little change can do as enough of them can add up to one big success over time.

In a nutshell, this book is a great reference to have handy regardless of what you're selling.

This is one of my favorite references. Whenever I have to draft copy, I page through it for ideas. To sell your product (in my case books), you have to describe it in (glowing) terms that relate to the needs of the potential buyer.
Bayan describes Grabbers (heads, salutations, invitations, openings, transitions), Descriptions and Benefits, Clinchers (persuasion and decision), Terms & Offers (discounts, freebies, trials, guarantees), and Special Strategies (company image, justifying a high price, knocking the competition, using demographics, flattering the reader, and appealing for contributions). Each section has pages of suggested phrasing. The appendix contains puffspeak-and its alternatives, wordy expressions, commonly confused words and more. This is not a book you read; it is a quick reference.

Enlightening but academic!

After a very brief reference to Antiquity and the Renaissance, the authors present the history of suburban street lay-outs in the United States from the 19th century to the present. This overlaps to a great extent with the history of urban planning in general and is thus potentially greatly interesting. Unfortunately, the focus is strictly suburban and no mention is made, say, of Savannah's, Philadelphia's or New York City's famous street patterns.

The authors include a critique of neo-traditional grids, surprising arguments in favour of cul-de-sacs and a pledge in favour of shared streets.

Regrettably, the writing style is tediously academic and technical, with unnecessary long quotations and enumerations. Though the book is abundantly illustrated with plans and photos, the former are extremely small and the latter, in black and white, are poorly reproduced. Indeed, the graphics and lay-out are surprisingly bland given today's computer age expectations.

Overall, this short work appears like a collage of various academic papers and will be worthwhile only to those very highly interested in the history of suburban development in the United States.

excellent introduction to how residential streets evolved

This books describes the history and evolution of residential streets in the US and Britain. It remains very objective, until the last chapter when the authors push for the shared streets concept. As a transportation planning professional, I found it very informative and compelling. It did the impossible: it changed my mind on the value of cul-de-sacs.

Great book because it is the ONLY Book. Helpful critticism

This book gets 5 stars because it is currently the only book on the subject of Patrick Nagel's art. However, as a longtime Nagel junkie, I have some bones to pick with it. The purpose of this review is to give the reader a bit of its unwritten history, some guidance on its contents, and some suggestions for future editions. The last point will be discussed with the first two.

First, a bit about its history. "The book" (as Nagelphiles know it) was printed in a rush by Nagel's publisher, Mirage. Nagel died in early 1984, and the prices being realized by galleries selling his prints skyrocketed. In reality, the book is a very glossy advertisement for Nagel's work in the first years after his death. It included those originals and prints that Mirage had for sale. It is incomplete, and does not show off of the breadth or quality of Nagel's work. Any academics studying this artist's work would hold their noses when examining the images. The images were hastily collected from works on hand, and do not provide an expository of this talented artist's short life.

Second, the book is wrong in subtle but important ways. The images were (and are) iconic and popular. In fact, many were cut out and displayed as small prints by fans and fly-by-night "art" businesses. However, the colors are too often muddy and do not reflect the actual colors of the original works. As to the tirage of the limited editions and posters reflected at the end of the book, these numbers are occassionally incorrect and often do not reflect printers proofs that were signed by Nagel. Further, as to the image of "Standing Lady" and "Wasserman Silkscreen", the pictures are reversed in the book (an understandable mistake if one looks at both images, but one which underscores how quick and rough this book was when it was published.)

The bottom line: If anyone is interested in Nagel, or wishes to collect his prints, this book is a must to own. However, a new book should be written with more in depth history and analysis of the work, along with more comprehensive and higher quality examples. Where possible, notes on edition sizes for prints should be corrected where they are not precise.

Great Book...Pity it's out of print

This is the most comprehensive book about the art of Patrick Nagel. It includes all of the paintings he did for Playboy as well as commemorative prints and sketches he did. I was surpised to see that he did a sculpture piece. It is a pity that the book is now out of print. The late Patrick Nagel was a genius. May his legend live on!

Pages are large enough for framing & compliments his distinctive palette of colours. Also available in paperback( although through another publisher at one point). A must for your coffee table or your art book collection

A complete waste of money, even for $0.99

The "book" is very brief and I found it a total waste of time and money. It doesn't give you any deep insight of the game, even for beginners.
The book contains a short history of chess, a short explanation of the pieces, very few openings and defenses, confusing and not complete, and sometimes wrong explanations on how to checkmate. And then it ends.

And I haven't even mentioned the poor language.....

I was looking for a chess book that would help my kids improve their opening game, but I wasn't prepared to spend a ton of money on one of the more expensive books. I found this book to be a great value for the cost. It has a good discussion about several different openings and presents them in a way that promotes understanding of the technique and reasoning behind specific moves. It's important to understand the strategy behind opening plans instead of simply memorizing a million openings. This book is aimed at beginners to intermediates. I love the graphics within the book which make it much easier to understand what the author was explaining.

It's not just the tips that made sure I kept a copy of this book around, but also the way they're presented: In practical terms, with examples of where features are useful that are applicable to most developers. Of course it introduces the basics, but I suspect that aspect of the book isn't that interesting for most people buying it (almost nobody is required to use Vim!), it's mostly in tying it all together that this book excels. It will take you from a moderate to intermediate Vim user to a fluent Vim user if you follow its guidance and practice.

However, it is unlikely that an advanced Vim user will find anything surprising in here. I keep this around for introducing others to vim or helping existing vim-ers gain skill; I rarely need it myself. It's got a target audience, and it's exquisitely tailored to them.

I learned some new things, even as a longtime Vim user

I've long been a user of Vim, and was originally skeptical I would learn much from this book. I purchased this book, as I've consumed a lot of the author's free content at[...]and wanted to support the author. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was able to learn a few things pretty quickly after opening the book.

It's well written and easy to understand, and has plenty of content for the novice and advanced user alike. The book is written as a series of tips collected into themes. Each tip gets more advanced within each group of tips.

Whether you are just starting out, or a long time user, this book is a great way to get that extra bit out of Vim.

This book is awesome for those who want to get efficiency out of VIM. Drew Neil does a fantastic job of isolating particular use cases of VIM that are invaluable. If you see your future in VIM, with respect to editing, then this is a safe and beneficial investment. I have read this book as often as I can, because I learn and gain a new gem every time I read it. This is not a book you'll want to read once.
