In The Making of a Human Bomb, Nasser Abufarha, a Palestinian anthropologist, explains the cultural logic underlying Palestinian martyrdom operations (suicide attacks) launched against Israel during the Al-Aqsa Intifada (2000–06). In so doing, he sheds much-needed light on how Palestinians have experienced and perceived the broader conflict. During the Intifada, many of the martyrdom operations against Israeli targets were initiated in the West Bank town of Jenin and surrounding villages. Abufarha was born and raised in Jenin. His personal connections to the area enabled him to conduct ethnographic research there during the Intifada, while he was a student at a U.S. university.

Abufarha draws on the life histories of martyrs, interviews he conducted with their families and members of the groups that sponsored their operations, and examinations of Palestinian literature, art, performance, news stories, and political commentaries. He also assesses data—about the bombers, targets, and fatalities caused—from more than two hundred martyrdom operations carried out by Palestinian groups between 2001 and 2004. Some involved the use of explosive belts or the detonation of cars; others entailed armed attacks against Israeli targets (military and civilian) undertaken with the intent of fighting until death. In addition, he scrutinized suicide attacks executed by Hamas and Islamic Jihad between 1994 and 2000. In his analysis of Palestinian political violence, Abufarha takes into account Palestinians’ understanding of the history of the conflict with Israel, the effects of containment on Palestinians’ everyday lives, the disillusionment created by the Oslo peace process, and reactions to specific forms of Israeli state violence. The Making of a Human Bomb illuminates the Palestinians’ perspective on the conflict with Israel and provides a model for ethnographers seeking to make sense of political violence.

About the Author

WILLIAM T. McGIVNEY, MS Resource Economics, is Principal Vice President for Professional Services at DRMcNatty & Associates, Inc. He has more than thirty years of experience in construction project management as a chief estimator, construction services manager, project controls manager, and contractor. He has taught at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, under the ABET program, which invites industry leaders to share their professional experience with students. Mr. McGivney has also assisted government agencies in the United States, as well as the Philippines, Egypt, Argentina, and Australia.

SUSUMU KAWAMURA, PhD, PE, is President of Kawamura Water Engineering, Inc. Dr. Kawamura has close to five decades of experience in every facet of water treatment facility design and operation. He has been involved in over 120 projects and is the author of more than ninety technical publications, as well as five books in three languages, including Integrated Design and Operation of Water Treatment Facilities, Second Edition (Wiley). He is a registered professional engineer in five states (Arizona, California, Nevada, Ohio, and Utah) as well as Japan. Dr. Kawamura taught graduate courses at University of Southern California for fifteen years starting in 1980. He was inducted into the AWWA Water Industry Hall of Fame in 2008.

Useful source of hard to find cost information. Presents a logical metohodology for putting total project costs together. I would have liked more discussion on how to use certain cost curves such as for pump stations? Is the capacity indicated per pump or per firm pumping capacity?

Idiosyncratic descriptions. Real conversations. Men in the city trying to understand. This is like a Goddard film on paper. Gorgeous and somehow melancholy--but not maudlin. For New York, which has been overrepresented, these representations are fresh and stinky, bright and clouded, and so they feel true, true, true.

A tour de force

"Ten Walks" is a brilliant meditation on the modern city and mind, the product of two manbabies evoking, for the reader, what it must have felt like to be Moses emerging from his basket the first time. The smells, the light, the shadows, the constant murmur of New York come alive in this riveting random narrative of life in the present tense. Mr. Cotner and Mr. Fitch have shown us a new way to walk, and to see.

Charming little book

Ten Walks/Two Talks is a quick read, but one that stays with you. Cotner and Fitch have an eye for idiosyncratic urban observation and their friendship as revealed in the talks is quirky and infectious.

The book does what poetry as its best can do: make you experience the world anew. For weeks after I read it, I walked through New York with a delightfully heightened awareness of its many small wonders and I imagine that would be the effect wherever you live.

My only complaint is that I wish the book were longer, so that it wouldn't have to end so soon.

The vajrayana, or “diamond vehicle,” also referred to as tantra, draws upon and extends the teachings of the hinayana and mahayana. As with the hinayana and the mahayana, the formal acceptance into the vajrayana is marked by a vow, in this case the samaya vow. Generally, students must complete preliminary practices, called ng�ndro, to prepare themselves for initiation into the vajrayana path before going further. Having done so, they then receive the appropriate empowerments to begin tantric practices. There are empowerment ceremonies of many kinds, called abhishekas. The vajrayana includes both form practices, such as visualizations and sadhanas (ritual liturgies), and formless practices based on allowing the mind to rest naturally in its inherent clarity and emptiness. Although on the surface, there is much greater complexity in tantric practices, the principles of mindfulness and awareness and the cultivation of compassion and skillful action continue to be of central importance.

The tantric path requires complete engagement and fierce dedication. It is said to be a more rapid path, but it is also more dangerous. There is a quality of directness, abruptness, and wholeheartedness. Tantrikas, or vajrayana practitioners, recognize that the most challenging aspects of life, the energies and play of confused emotions and frightening obstacles, can be worked with as gateways to freedom and realization. This along with the two preceding volumes are what I would consider essential reading and study material. Judy Lief deserves an award for presenting this material in such a comprehensive and pragmatic way. Truthfully one of the best dharma books available.

This One is the Vajrayana Bomb!

The best book on Vajrayana I have ever read. I read many books on this topic. I don't read Tibetan but we're talking English language here. I love Chogyam Trungpa's books and videos of his talks they are often just amazing. I am not a Shambhalla-ite but follow and practice a lot of Kagyu, Nyingma lineage. But this book takes the cake. I have so many problems with my practice it is not even funny and no one, not even my teachers are particularly interested in talking to me about them. Senior practitioners just smirk, mark a notch in their I"m-One-Up on this clown register and suggest that perhaps I am just on drugs or something, lamas seem to not understand my English and just kind of say something unrelated to my questions or just chuckle and change the topic. But reading this book cleared up so many obstacles and misunderstanding about the Vajrayana process. It's like having another real teacher. I don't care what they say about books being little to no good, in the case of this one its clearly not the case, or not for me anyway. I don't want to buy the other books because there is no way they could be this good. I don't want to be let down again at this point. I read it cover to cover in a week, I couldn't do anything else. The best book I have read in my life. Really.

Not for beginners

This huge book is somewhat ill-conceived in the sense that it's an agglomeration of Trungpa's oral teachings, cobbled together posthumously in an attempt to preserve his knowledge and legacy (and perhaps make some money for Shambhala). Tibetan Buddhist tantra is already a profound, esoteric, and convoluted field, so in a sense this book is a quintessential volume - obtuse enough to thwart any straightforward attempts at understanding. Tantra itself is an altered state of consciousness. I think the list price is outrageous for this being basically an archival book (I paid $90 for it at the boulder bookstore!) and it's also tough to discredit something that contains such precious information. This is a book that resists simple description. From one perspective, it's almost a thousand pages of rambling words which may be better spent in meditation - I think Trungpa himself might agree to this. From another perspective, it's a rare treasure of discourses by a man whose life mission was to bring the tremendous blessing of Tibetan Buddhism to the west. I highly suggest going into an actual bookstore and leafing through this before purchasing.

About the Author
Spencer A. Rathus received his Ph.D. from the University at Albany and is on the faculty of The College of New Jersey. His research interests include treatment of obesity and eating disorders, smoking cessation, human growth and development, methods of therapy, and sexual dysfunctions. He is the author of the widely used Rathus Assertiveness Schedule and has written several college textbooks, including PSYCH, HDEV, AIDS: WHAT EVERY STUDENT NEEDS TO KNOW, HUMAN SEXUALITY IN A CHANGING WORLD, ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY IN A CHANGING WORLD, and CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE: VOYAGES IN DEVELOPMENT.

The book is great - the publisher appears to be a shark

I've used Cengage books before, and the promised study tools were difficult to access. It's gotten much much worse. There are practice quizzes promised inside the book itself, but the website [...] only leads to options where a student must pay for the tools. Even when I selected the free resources button, I again landed on the order page. I'm pragmatic. I considered, and decided to spend the $12 for the study tools. On checkout, they were going to charge me $120 for the electronic book and study tools. Upon closer examination, the fine print reads that the study tools are only available to students who purchase the books from Cengage. REALLY? This stinks of conflict of interest. Are these books intended for institutions of higher learning? Unimpressed, frustrated, and even furious. Don't promise something you won't deliver.

Apologies to a great author, Spencer A. Rathus. The book content is beautifully laid out. I simply CANNOT abide the practices of this publisher.

If this textbook is to be used for an overview class (either intro or start of a series) then the book is great. However there is quite a bit that is simply mentioned and never brought up again. For example, in the parts that deal with cognitive, social, and emotional developments there are several theories discussed, but some seem to be favored, specifically Piaget's which is broken down well along with Freud's and Erikson's. Other theories don't receive as much attention or seem to be glossed over. I think the other aspects of development are covered fairly well and I enjoyed reading the book.

Good book, watch out you may not have the last 3 chapters!!!

The book was great, very informative, etc. What I had an issue with is the fact that, believe it or not, this book comes in several formats. You won't know this right away, but like in my case, right before the final I found out that my book ended 3 chaprter short. Why? I guess they print them with 13 chapters and some with 16 chapters. No idea why. But when you pay a good amount for the book, you expect it to have "the entire" content. This is the first time I've ever encountered such a confusion and misrepresentation!

Beauty in the Ordinary - An Author's Perspective on the Japanese Aesthetic

"'The quality that we call beauty . . . must always grow from the realities of life.' And to Tanizaki this meant the whole of life, the base as well as the noble, eating and defecating as well as playgoing and the contemplation of calligraphy" (pp. 46).

Several years ago I found myself living in an old, run-down apartment in the port city of Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, located off the coast of the Japan Sea. The frigid tile of the moldy shower room, the damaged shoji separating the cramped quarters, the traditional tatami bedroom I slept in - those six months in that largely rural subsection of Japan remain vivid in my memory; and, though I would come to experience much more of Japan in later years, those memories in that apartment and in that city formed the basis by which I understood this short "essay" from Tanizaki.

Written in 1933, Tanizaki's "In Praise of Shadows" (陰影礼賛) feels like a "stream-of-consciousness" piece, the author's musings on traditional Japan and a dying aesthetic in the wake of Western modernism. While the Japanese have notably strived to retain their cultural heritage, Tanizaki (if he were alive today) would likely argue that only vestiges remain: "[F]or Tanizaki a museum piece is no cause for rejoicing. An art must live as a part of our daily lives or we had better give it up. We can admire it for what it once was, and try to understand what made it so - as Tanizaki does in "In Praise of Shadows" - but to pretend that we can still participate in it is mere posturing" (pp. 48). Tanizaki paints a world that is ultimately lost, yet uncannily familiar - a world, for those of us who have lived in Japan and/or are familiar with the basics of Japanese culture, still exists in the shadows.

Anyone interested in the Japanese aesthetic and culture ought to read this (at only 48 pages, there's really no excuse not to). While some segments failed to capture my interest, it was, on the whole, fascinating. That Tanizaki can turn the toilet - perhaps the epitome of mundane living - into "a place of spiritual repose" (pp. 3), even something elegant and beautiful, speaks to the depth of the work. And, at points, Tanizaki's musings seem to move beyond the realm of aesthetics to touch upon truths of the human condition, as captured in this favorite passage of mine:

"We do not dislike everything that shines, but we do prefer a pensive luster to a shallow brilliance, a murky light that, whether in a stone or an artifact, bespeaks a sheen of antiquity. Of course this 'sheen of antiquity' of which we hear so much is in fact the glow of grime. In both Chinese and Japanese the words denoting this glow describe a polish that comes of being touched over and over again, a sheen produced by the oils that naturally permeate an object over long years of handling -- which is to say grime. . . . There is no denying, at any rate, that among the elements of the elegance in which we take such delight is a measure of the unclean, the unsanitary. I suppose I shall sound terribly defensive if I say that Westerners attempt to expose every speck of grime and eradicate it, while we Orientals carefully preserve and even idealize it. Yet for better or for worse we do love things that bear the marks of grime, soot, and weather, and we love the colors and the sheen that call to mind the past that made them" (pp. 11-12).

Thoughtful, sometimes silly critical look at ideals of beauty

This was a great read. It was assigned reading for a class I had on the meaning of "beauty" in the arts. The book is largely about Japanese culture, but the experience of reading it as part of any Western-ized culture is much more about looking critically at what the Western world finds beautiful. In maybe the first ten pages, he approaches this argument in the most delightfully funny way -- by talking about toilets. By the end of this section, I was ready to say f*ck my stupid pretentious ugly toilet and install a japanese bathroom. Anyway, the point is he brings up these points in really interesting ways, and I'm always a fan of more reasons to see beauty in the world :)

PS It's so weird how amazon doesn't let you post a review unless you answer the question "How would you describe the plot of this book?", regardless of whether it's fiction with a "plot" or not. Like, the question comes up on my textbooks and this nonfiction piece too. So silly.

Obscured by Light

This is a gem of a book. Beautifully translated by Harper and Seidensticker, this series of brief meditations on Japanese aesthetics moves seemingly randomly among topics as diverse as theatre, women, lacquerware, food, toilets, hotels, and electric lights. The passage on the Japanese toilet is worth the price of the book, even if it is unclear how serious Tanizaki was being. And the section on lacquerware is one to be treasured and read again. Tanizaki mourns the passing of much of what he sees as the essence of Japan's shadow-enshrined aesthetic sensibility. But what can be done? In the end, even he finds he must acknowledge certain benefits of modern life, and he refuses to go farther than he deems practical (or affordable) in recreating the material life of the past for himself. Nevertheless, his observations clearly come from the soul of a man who feels a combination of loss and appreciation for a time when light and shadow revealed precisely what needed to be revealed, and no more. If you have never thought that sipping soup, bathing, or using the toilet could be an aesthetic experience, read this book.
