As an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, I have successfully treated numerous people for mental/emotional concerns over the past 17 years. This very readable book raises the public's awareness of the wonderful possibilities Chinese medicine holds for mental/emotional healing.

Do I have patients and friends for whom pharmaceuticals work to help them cope with life better? Yes, and they are happy to take these medications for as long as they need. Are there others for whom pharmaceuticals have not worked and have even caused greater distress? Absolutely. For these people, there is hope in other arenas, and one of the aims of this book is raise awareness about that. What Chinese medicine can do is still so unknown to most people in our country, and I am deeply grateful for this book providing such useful and interesting information.

I really appreciated the author sharing his experiences, both from his life and from his practice. As a trained social worker, he has worked in the arena of mental/emotional issues for most of his life. He talks not only about fixing problems but also about balance, which is the foundation of Chinese medicine and lifestyle. If you are exploring options for treating mental/emotional problems, or are just curious about Chinese medicine, definitely check out this book.

The promise of holistic healing

As an LAc and an LCSW, the author has a terrific background for his exploration of the recovery from emotional imbalances. This book shows that addressing emotional imbalances on a deep and holistic level can lead to amazing growth and life satisfaction. The appendices by Thea Elijah, Dr. Stephen Cowen, and Heiner Fruehauf are a wonderful bonus. Case studies help illustrate the profound and positive impact of Chinese Medicine. Clearly Fudeman is a caring practitioner eager to share his experience.

A gritty autobiographical journey to Cape Town by Porsche, with entertaining characters!

Survival of the Quickest is an automotive journey by Posrche from Plymouth to Cape Town, with an abundance of challenges and humour along the way.

The book begins with a sense of impending doom, as the reader realises that Ben is about to be thrown into a an intense journey with a co-driver he is barely talking to. However, the journey throws up many a surprise as each of the characters deal with the intensity of the varied challenges faced in quite wildly different ways. Luckily for Ben and his co-driver, their strained relationship takes a surprising turn. The book strikes a great balance between the characters, colourful descriptions of the countries and their histories, as well as the trials and tribulations of the poor old Porsche. Being a female reader I was worried I'd have no interest in the inevitable breakdown problems with the car, however these were so random and eventful that it gave an interesting juxtaposition between characters, who either calmly came together to fix the problem (usually with the equivalent of gaffer tape), or the guy who wanted to throw everything in and have the poor old Porsche towed into Cape Town.

The author does a fantastic job of creating tension a great rapport with the main characters, to the point where I was nervous as to whether the car's problems would overcome the trip, as failure appeared inevitable. By the end of the book I felt like I'd been along for the ride myself. An excellent read, am crossing my fingers the author writes a sequel!

A well-written and well-paced classic travelogue.

Coombs and his friends take on an almost inconceivable task: driving from England to the southern tip of Africa in a high-mileage Porsche 944. Coombs ups the difficulty by choosing a a well-used, low-dollar 4x4 as his 'support' vehicle, a group of friends who don't get along, and a co-driver with whom he's having severe relationship difficulties.

This is a well-written and well-paced classic travelogue full of interesting observations about the places and events and people he encountered. Overall, Coombs spent more time talking about the areas through which he traveled; the difficulties of road, terrain and bureaucracy; the vagaries of road food in Africa; and the interpersonal relationships among his team than he did about the car and his attempts to keep it running. This is NOT a criticism of what Coombs has written, just an observation about what I was seeking as opposed to what Coombs he delivered.

I purchased this mainly because I'm a big fan of Porsche; I've owned three, none of them new and a couple of them well into their 'vintage' years. I get nervous when I drive to the next state over and here Coombs travels several thousands of miles crossing countries with poor roads, poor support and repair facilities and some of the worst 'governments' in the world. That took a lot of courage and self-confidence; and Coombs has my respect for even imagining such a trip, let alone pulling it off!

But, I was looking for something that focused a little more on the car. Of course, the car - while it didn't perform flawlessly (how could it?), performed well enough that it covered the distance with only a couple of significant problems. A testament to Porsche's engineering and construction prowess, more than to Coombs's self-admitted amateur mechanical abilities. This left Coombs freer to focus his book on things besides keeping the car moving along the road.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventurous travelogues more than to someone who likes Porsches.

Great! I recommend it.

The book is great, so far. I haven't finished reading it entirely. A nice touch would be some pictures to support the text. The main reason I bought the book was to see what problems the author ran into under extreme conditions. I also own a white Porsche 944 (1987). May I suggest that other readers run a search on the author's name to access pictures taken during the trip. Another feature I like is that the author gives insights on the various countries crossed. I did cheat and read what finally happened to the 944. It was not junked out, in spite of having been trashed druing the trip.

not what I expected

I must be reading a completely different book from the rest of the reviewers on here.I ordered this book with glad anticipation after reading a preview of the first few chapters. The preface and introduction hit the nail on the head. However, the rest of it turned out to be completely different from what I expected. I was looking forward to details of some personal experience of spiritual transformation by the authors. But instead it reads like a long, boring monologue on the spiritual achievements and experiences of well known Western figures such as Keats,Descartes, Tolstoy, Plato (who's 'ancient wisdom' is mostly borrowed from ancient Eygpt). It's quite technical and comes off as dry and academic as opposed to inspiring. However, it is very detailed and goes into depth about the whole process of spiritual development. It's also quite an interesting read in parts and contains many spiritual concepts that are corroborated in other books on this subject matter. Therefore, I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I would recommend it for a more "intellectual" as opposed to "relaxing" read.

I purchased many copies for like minded friends and the response was "This is a book who's time has come."
The authors invested much time and effort to translate esoteric teachings into every day language.

Richard L. Allington�is a Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik s philosophy plays a significant role in twentieth century Jewish thought. This book focuses on the first and the second stages of Soloveitchik s philosophy (1945-1965), through a systematic and detailed discussion of some of his essays, including "From There You Shall Seek" and "The Lonely Man of Faith." Schwartz analyzes these essays according to this thesis: in the mid 40s Soloveitchik used the phenomenology of religion to express his views, while in the 50s he added the existential theory.

About the Author
Dov Schwartz was Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Bar Ilan University (2003-2006) and head of the departments of Philosophy (1999-2002) and Music (2007-2011). Currently he is the head of the Interdisciplinary Unit in Bar Ilan University. He is also the chair of the Natali and Isidor Friedman Cathedra for the Teaching of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik's Philosophy.

Schwartz has written an academic book that attempts to help us understand Soloveitchik’s work overall. Schwartz
has the advantage of looking at the totality of his work and finding connections to Aristotle, contemporary Jewish
philosophers such Abraham J. Heschel and Will Herberg, and classical philosophers such as Maimonides, and
Judah Halevi. This second volume follows Schwartz’s first volume, _Religion or Halakha_ published by Brill in 2007.
The first volume covers the Rav’s early thoughts as found in _Halakhic Man_ and before.

Soloveitchik’s writings are quite complex and must be considered on several levels. However, at times I felt
Schwartz made the explanation of his philosophy more complicated than the original work. His _Kol Dodi Dofek_
was originally a homily in honor of Israel Independence Day, but Schwartz finds allusions to the Holocaust, pain
and suffering, national rebirth, as well as a transformation of the Rav’s thoughts concerning religious Zionism.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the Rav’s philosophy in a way that the reading
of individual works can not convey. This book is for scholars and academic libraries.
