About the Author
In his 25 years as a Pagan, Ceisiwr Serith has been active in the Pagan community both as a writer and a presenter of workshops at Pagan gatherings. His interest in prayers and offerings grew naturally as the result of writing rituals for Wiccan covens, Druidic groves, and, of course, his book The Pagan Family. He has written several articles on Proto-Indo-European theology and Celtic and Druidic traditions for Enchante, The Druid's Progress, and Oak Leaves. Serith is a member of Arn Draiocht Fein, the nation's largest Druid fellowship, and a founding member of one of its groves.

Read Prayers from This Every Sunday

Each Sunday I light candles and dedicate them to the Mother and Father God, the Universe they created, the Great Spirit, Ascended Masters, Archangels, Guardian angels, my personal spirit guides and everyone on my pre-created chart--good or bad, then I read a prayer from Sylvia Brown's Novus Spiritus book of prayers, a prayer or two from my Wicca Book of Prayers, and one or two from this Pagan book of prayers. I am a Unitarian Universalist and believe God--and Goddess-- love ALL religions, so I try to get in a few from each. I have been very unhappy with the Christian religion (but still hold Jesus close to my heart as one of the Ascended Masters, so he is NOT forgotten!) but would be willing to add in a couple Christian prayers if I can find a book of prayers that are open and accepting and tolerant of all religions. That's my biggest gripe against Christianity--it thinks it's the only true religion and everyone else is hell bound. Not good.

Lovely Pagan Prayer Book of History & Example

I was very pleased with the (unexpected) ease of digesting SO MUCH information from this little book. The author gives backgrounds for many faiths/philosophies/beliefs regarding prayer, as well as definitions & examples for the modern Pagan. I feel very comfortable creating my own prayers now, with so many examples, as well as using those from the book. As a solitary practitioner this was a formidable teaching tool.

Pretty Good for Pagans

This book was recommended to me by another pagan. I think the concept is great, and it's certainly a well researched book. However, some of the prayers just don't resonate with me, and I think that's to be expected. As a prayer book in itself, it's excellent, covering many subjects, from praise to just wanting help with a problem. The fact that some prayers don't resonate with me, is merely my belief system clashing with some of the prayers that appear to be a bit "oh please help me" kind of thing. You can adapt them to your own belief system however and change the words to suit yourself. Having not seen many books like this out there (if any?), I think it's a gem and you'd get a lot of use out of it.

Fascinating story of a little known event in WW II

I have known of this event for most of my life because my Aunt Lois (Watson) McKenzie was one of the nurses on the flight which crashed in Albania.

Cate Lineberry has written a remarkably book. Well researched and detailed, the book is a pleasure to read. Her style is gripping and enjoyable, while filling in many of the specific details of the ordeal which the group of survivors overcame. Whether the reader is a student of history, or just someone interested in a little known adventure of World War II, this is a great book for adding to the lore of that remarkable generation.

The survivors of the crash were for the most part Army nurses and medics with little or no training in survival behind enemy lines. The geography, language and culture of Albania made that place probably one of the most challenging locations in Europe for the group to try to travel through and to survive. Throw in the ever present threat of discovery by German soldiers, and you have quite a tale of heroism and perseverance for the survivors to just deal with getting through each day.

This book was a joy for me to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who may be interested in learning more about the people who served in World War II.

An incredibly well written story of heroism and courage! The author has done a stunning job of capturing this amazing story. The group's harrowing adventure comes alive with the myriad of details Lineberry has woven into this compelling narrative. I could not put it down and would recommend without hesitation! Perfect timing for both Mother's Day and Father's Day.

Hard to put down.

This book is an exciting story of a mostly unknown gem of WWII history. Once you start into the book it will be hard to put it down for wanting to know what will happen next.The book really puts into perspective the danger,discomfort and suffering many of the "Greatest Generation" could and did endure. They don't make people like these anymore.

Steve Haines has been working in healthcare for over 25 years and as a bodyworker since 1998. Understanding the science of trauma and pain has transformed his approach to healing. He has studied Yoga, Shiatsu, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE). He is a UK registered Chiropractor and teaches TRE and Cranial work all over the world. Simple and succinct and I think it could be very helpful for those wishing a brief understanding of trauma in humans

'Trauma is Really Strange' by Steve Haines, with illustrations by Sophie Standing is the kind of graphic novel, you might overlook, but what is does in it's short 32 pages is pretty amazing.

The book examines what happens to the brain and body when trauma happens. We can go into a disassoiated state where we feel disconnected from our bodies. This happens in PTSD as well as other trauma. Rather than dwell on the causes or the past, the book offers techniques that are used to get patients through it. Using the acronym OMG (for Orient, Move, Ground), we learn how reconnecting with the present and our bodies can help slowly overcome trauma. It's filled with footnotes with related research for those desiring further study.

It's an overly simplified approach to a complex subject, but presented in a very user friendly format. The illustrations are like infographics in nature. They are simple, but help illustrate the topics, like disconnected heads and bodies, or mice curled in fetal positions. The writing is encouraging and frank. I don't think it's overly optimistic, but it would seem to give hope to those suffering trauma and their loved ones. I see this as a very useful resource for those wanting a brief look at the subject and wanting to understand what trauma can do to people.

Forgetting the why and targeting the what

Trauma is anything that overwhelms our ability to cope. Something triggers the “smoke alarm” of our brains, and all kinds of ancient systems kick in. There are, for example, three primitive reflexes: fight or flight, dissociation and orientation (social connection). There is also shaking, which keeps us tense and ready. Sometimes, the smoke alarm fires at the wrong time, or doesn’t shut off. It can make us dysfunctional in society.

The main takeaway I got from this book was that the why is not important. Reliving experiences, dragging up old memories and rationalizing or intellectualizing are not the way to tame the trauma. It won’t just melt away if you think about what might have caused it. Addressing the what, the physical actions of the body’s response is what can help. Showing your mind that things are fine around you, socializing with others, making eye contact, and controlling the impulse to rage are apparently the better ways to dissipate trauma.

In a country of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, this is very helpful. There is a lot of short fuse anger and often rage. We send perfectly normal people off to other countries, feed them life-threatening stress for a couple of years, and release them back home traumatized. It might not show up right away, but it can last for years. Knowing that with will power, it can be controlled or defeated, is important information. Simplifying it in a comic book setting might get more sufferers to read about it and understand.

Trauma is Really Strange by Steve Haines is a free NetGalley ebook that I read during an early morning in December. Being as I live with free-floating anxiety nearly everyday, I knew that this book could offer a new perspective (even though the cover looks a little bit like the Handbook for the Recently Deceased from Beetlejuice).

This book is actually a 30-page ecomic/handbook that relates information through traditional comicbook cells (usually progressive horizontal rectangles) with non-traditional animation. It's sort of a cross between 50's PSA drawings and neo-modern-realist art to show physical activity, tension, and the workings of the brain with its two main focal colors being greenish-aqua and muted scarlet. Never once does the language of this book droop to levels of fluffy self-help or the impossibly high heights of academic diagnoses. Instead, it strafes right in the middle; approachable, informative and reassuring. It's also quite apparent that the writer is British, since his reassurance is respectful, offers guidance, and isn't too cloying with self-love drivel. All-around, a great read to turn to in disassociation or re-orientation.

Can't wait for the next 2 in the trilogy!

Every so often one picks up a book and for some reason it hits all of those deep buttons we try to ignore. In other words, we all like a Cinderella story even if we think we are far too sophisticated to want one! Sometimes series fiction rises above itself by being well-written and peopled with characters that get under your skin. For me, this book, despite its inane and rather juvenile title was one of those times when I was sure I was about to read something silly and shallow but I was, in fact, moved and entertained greatly.

Nurse Lizzie Bond hasn't had it easy. She works hard and lives modestly, caring for an elderly neighbour and mentally inadequate mother. When her neighbour dies, she tries to locate his family but when she does, she runs into a whole wall of contradictions. Working through them brings her close to Sean O'Banyon - Wall Street giant with a hurt soul and a heart full of angst. Seemingly opposites, Lizzie and Sean are each the missing half of the other.

This book is the first of a trilogy telling the stories of three brothers whose horrific childhood has marked each of them deeply. I, for one, can't wait for the next instalment for the author writes well, creates wonderfully well-rounded characters and tells a damned good story. Wonderful stuff!

LOVE!

JR Ward (aka `Jessica Bird') wrote `The billionaire next door' in 2007, the same year that `Lover Revealed' (Butch's story) and `Lover Unbound' (Vishous's book) came out.

`Billionaire next door' definitely has all the romantic characteristics we've come to expect from JR Ward. Strong Alpha male with a fractured background. Angelic heroine who pulls the hero out of his drudgery. And of course, hot sex scenes. I wasn't actually expecting such explicit sex because the book was published by Harlequin Silhouette, and for some reason I have this idea that Harlequin romance books are a little tame when it comes to the nitty gritty. The sex scenes aren't as hot and heavy as they are in the `Blackdagger' books (not so many dirty detailed descriptions - damn!) but they are sizzling and definitely add spark to Sean and Lizzie's romance.

`Billionaire next door' reminded me quite strongly of Rehvenge's book `Lover Avenged'. Rehvenge and Sean are both rich, successful Alpha males who had abusive childhoods. Elena and Lizzie are both nurses, currently experiencing tough financial times by being their single-parents soul providers - Elena's father had a form of Alzheimer's, while Lizzie's mother has some sort of mental disability. For a good portion of the book Sean keeps secret his true career and financial success from Lizzie, for a plethora of reasons - just as Rehvenge kept quiet about his being a nightclub owner (among other shady dealings).

There is a small nod to the `Blackdagger Brotherhood' during one of Sean's childhood flashbacks. He mentions that growing up his father wasn't much of a cook, and so Sean and his brothers relied on the kindness of his best friends mother. The best friend in question was one Butch O'Neal. Has to be the same cop turned vampire, right? Butch is a Southie boy who had a big family - and Sean mentions that Butch was one of five kids. Reading that small Blackdagger reference had me doing a little fan-girl squeal.

I really, really liked this book. It has all the best aspects of the Blackdagger Brotherhood, minus intense plot, heavy action and heroes vs. villains. It's just romance - boy meets girl and everything that ensues.

Perhaps the only negative thing about the book is the fact that it beautifully sets up a series (subsequent books intended to tell the story of Sean's older brother, Mick and younger brother, Billy) that by all accounts JR Ward has no real intention of continuing. It's a real shame because there is plenty of potential here - but rumour on the chat boards is that since the `Blackdagger' books blew up, Ward put the `O'Banyon Brothers' on the backburner indefinitely.

But `Jessica Bird' did write an earlier series for Harlequin, the `Moorehouse Legacy' series has 4 books, and I intend to read all of them because I was so impressed with `The Billionaire next door'.

Like a fine wine her books get better with age

I received my book yesterday and read the whole thing within two hours-- I simply couldn't put it down. I'll skip a long synopsis and instead state that Sean and Lizzie were definitely a random coupling. Lizzie is financially responsible for her mother, working two jobs to support them both. Sean is a rich playboy who earned every dollar of his money by putting himself through school. However, once he meets Lizzie he realizes that she might actually care about him for who he is and not his money. Jessica took the time to provide a good backdrop for Sean and why he has issues with trust. Excellent character development--at the end I was emotionally invested in ALL of the characters and not ready for it to be over so soon.
Jessica did a good job setting up the storylines for his brothers--I myself am definitely looking forward to Mac's story!
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a happily ever after with a few predictable bumps and twists along the way.
Also for those familiar with The Black Dagger Brotherhood we have a brief mention of one those lovely men in leather :) For those who are not familiar you are seriously missing out.

Chicken Soup for the Cat & Dog Lover's Soul

I got the book as a Christmas gift and found myself transported to warm memories of pets, past, present and future. I found the book to be like looking in someone's emotional diary; sharing their most intimate, special moments of sharing their lives fully with a beloved pet. I bought ten copies of the book and gave it as a new millennium gift to all the pet lover's in my life and I'm prould to report that the praises, thank you's and high-fives keep coming my way. If you love your pets like family, and are tired of fiction or stories of gloom and doom, add this book to your shopping cart!

Best short stories I have ever read

I love this book! I found myself laughing and crying through out the book. Two of my favorite stories were, "15 Minutes of Fame" and "Bedroom Secrets of Pets Revealed". I have 2 large dogs and 1 cat and can relate to both of these stories. It's nice to know that there are so many people in the world that give the gift of life and love to their animals. If you too are an animal lover, this is the book for you. I am sure you will relate to at least one of its many well written stories.

Pet owners: Read this book

I had never really been "close" to my cat before. He was very sweet and affectionate but I must say I always thought people who were so in love with their animals were a little strange. However, when I read this boom I began to realize just how much my cat actually meant to me and how much I really did love him. It made me realize that he really was a big oart of my life and he had grown to be part of the family. Anyone who loves their pets will love this book and find themsleves a little more close to their pets.

Interesting Take on the Pacific Air War!

There have been many memoirs and histories of the air war in the Pacific published. Some are by famous fliers like Pappy Boyington and George Kenney; others by less well-known Pacific vets. Some were published during the war; others decades later. University professor Jerome Klinkowitz takes over 100 such narratives and weaves them into a unique chronicle of air combat.

PACIFIC SKIES, published in 2004 by University Press of Mississippi, offers a fresh and fascinating look at American fliers in combat. He incorporates the reminiscences of various combatants within a framework that sets the stage for that veteran's narrative and then provides perspective and commentary on what that person wrote. In some cases the individual's take on "what happened" was wildly inaccurate as to results actually achieved. In other cases wartime censorship shaped what was presented. Perspectives and attitudes changed as the years passed and so on.

Many of the works referenced in Klinkowitz's book - CARRIER COMBAT, BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP, GRIM REAPERS, I COULD NEVER BE SO LUCKY AGAIN, IRON EAGLE, DAUNTLESS HELLDIVERS and PUSHING THE ENVELOPE - are considered classics in the field. Klinkowitz's learned commentary on each makes for fascinating reading and provides new insights into the original.

While PACIFIC SKIES isn't your conventional "I was there" military history, it is a marvelous, entertaining and thought-provoking read. As I was reading it, I kept thinking of Paul Harvey's tag-line: "And now you know...the rest of the story" and how much that fit PACIFIC SKIES. Highly recommended.

An overview of the air war in the Pacific Theatre

This book is a necessarily shortened version of the air war in the Pacific, but is particularly useful in giving specific references in the published literature for each facet mentioned. Most of the major players and incidents are given some coverage, but a book by the people involved is given for each one. This includes Japanese as well as American and English sources. There is a moderately long section on the various factors considered in the deployment of the two atomic bombs, as well as discussion on the personnel involved.
