Best Appreciated by Quantum Sophisticates

(The following remarks are based on a reading of only 9 of the12 chapters so far, but that is basis enough for a strong impressionand to give a warning to potential buyers of this book.) This book contains Tomonaga's charming memoirs on the early years of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory. It might be subtitled "Physics papers I knew and loved."--he takes the readers through an informal but masterly tour of many key QM and relativistic developments surrounding Spin as they unfolded during the 1920's and 30's. Thanks to the informal, historical approach, this account possesses a human warmth and interest that no textbook is likely to match. All students of Quantum Theory must be grateful to the author for recording these lectures, and to the translator for his making them available in a pleasant, (almost) idiomatic English (and for adding some helpful remarks.) WARNING : "most accessible" treatment of Spin , as described in the Editorial Review does **NOT** mean this book is the for the casual science buff. Ideally the reader should have a very solid background in Physics--preferably at the graduate level--including at least a 1-year course in Quantum Mechanics, and some acquaintance with (Relativistic) Quantum Field Theory won't hurt at all for some chapters. Although the discussion is more informal than that of a textbook, and the math is not beyond undergraduate level, the author does not spare the equations or technical detail. Even if you lack the technical background, as I did in places (notwithstanding a Ph.D. in physics) you may still enjoy his piquant reminiscences about such masters as Pauli, Heisenberg, and Dirac, and their unique, distinctive styles of creating physics. In the final (non-technical) chapter, he also talks frankly about the state of Physics in Japan and his own struggles to enter the world of research in the "wonder years" when modern quantum theory developed.

Spin: a beautiful history of Quantum Mechanics

This is one of my favourite physics books. I have always had difficulties understanding the nature of spin and this book explains it with unsurpassable style. There are so many aspects to spin that it requires the brilliant exposition of someone like Tomonaga to unpack all its subtleties: spin is not simply the self-rotation of the electron, it is also a subtle property of isotropic space. As well, spin is at the heart of particle statistics in quantum field theory. In nuclear physics, the concept of spin was also coopted into a description of iso-tropic space! Not only does Tomonaga describe the theoretical aspects of spin, but he patiently recounts the breakthough (now obscure) experiments that measured it. Some of the highlights of the book include an discussion of the nature of vectors and tensors and an immensely readable history of second quantisation that leads to quantum field theory.
It is interesting to contrast Tomanaga's style with the other 2 physicists who shared the Nobel prize in electrodynamics with him. From the folksy iconoclasm of Richard Feynman to the brutal formalistic abstraction of Julian Schwinger (who broke the back of Physical Review with his third paper on electrodynamics which is one of the most equation heavy paper ever written). Then there is Tomonaga, who epitomises simplicity and clarity, with a clear-eyed reverence for the rich history of physics. He is above all, a sympathetic teacher - he tells you when something is difficult - for instance, explaining how Dirac stumbled on second quantisation "Why must you quantize it once more as the name second quantization suggests? We mortals stand bewildered here. Howerver, there is no use being bewildered, so let us try to discover why we feel bewildered." It's no wonder that Freeman Dyson said that it was only with the framework of Tomonaga, could he weave Feynman and Schwinger together into a comprehensible whole.
However, this book is not just a text-book on spin, in its pages, there is a superb history of quantum mechanics. Tomonaga gives a blow-by-blow account of the development of quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and nuclear physics, as it relates to spin. Through the recreation of the arguments and counter-arguments of the old masters of quantum mechanics, he has brought to life these characters that so dominated physics in the golden era of the 20's and 30's.

A Wonderful Overview

This is a series of twelve lectures of the physics of the spin angular momentum, and essentially quantum mechanical notion allied only metaphorically to the macroscopic world. Not, perhaps, in all its implications-the theory of ferromagnetism gets short shrift- but in its essential physical aspects.

The topics include spectroscopy, Thomas precession (which one of my undergraduate professors could never fully believe), relativistic quantum mechanics, and statistical physics. It's all very rewarding.

Expounding on "the wide range of physics with varying degrees of difficulty" that understanding spin requires, the translator's preface quotes the Feynman Lectures, "It appears to be one of the few places in physics where there is a rule which can be stated very simply, but for which no one has found a simple and easy explanation. The explanation is deep down in relativistic quantum mechanics. This probably means that we do not have a complete understanding of the fundamental principle involved." The translator, Takeshi Oka, is a professor at the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago, and the introduction is from 1996. We can trust his assessment of the situation and conjecture that it probably hasn't changed much since then.

The approach is collegial rather than academic and to anyone with a modest physics or mathematics background (e.g., someone with physics minor or an elementary understanding of vectors and differential equations), the treatments should be sufficiently accessible to use as an introduction. For an educated reader with no mathematical background, I think only lectures 9 and 11 will be a total wash, although another six will be rough going (but. I'd hope, rewarding).

Although the lectures aren't overly mathematical, at least in the sense that a physicist would use the term, the lectures contain mathematics. Some equations are shown, others swiftly derived and one or two proofs are introduced. Many times, Tomonaga introduces ideas to explain why a particular aspect of the mathematics, i.e., spinors, was needed or created. The intuitive descriptions of the mathematics and intimate explanations of how ideas were derived are invaluable for understanding the nature of spin.

Good book, all the right people hate it

Alice Marwick's book is a great ethnography of the start-up culture of Silicon Valley. She spent years as an observer, and she has an informed view on the tech culture she immersed herself in. Her chapter on the rhetoric of Web 2.0 was a particularly insightful analysis of how the way we view tech culture and talk about tech has shaped the ways we adopt and understand emerging media.

Marwick's portrayal of Silicon Valley is balanced, but it's definitely not positive. She paints a picture of status seekers who sound like they're straight out of an Edith Wharton novel. She also shows how the start-up, libertarian mindset also contributes to crazy labor practices that hurt workers. She talks about how workers put in crazy hours and take less money because they are enraptured by the relatively few "Web 2.0" success stories we're all familiar with. It's useful to note that her book pissed off a bunch of tech commenters (in various comment sections), so if you're making people mad it means you're doing some solid work and willing to look critically at your object of study.

The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was that it was a bit theoretically light in points. Still, read the book. It's entertaining and worth the price of admission if only for her take down of silly self help books about succeeding with social media.

my daughter's book

I guess you might say I am strongly biased towards this book because my daughter is the author. But I am not a techie, just have some computer experience and use facebook and twitter etc. So, I was a little worried as to whether I would understand the book at all. I just finished it a couple of days ago, and have to say that it is so well written even a non-geek like me can understand it. Parts of it are sad really because the book points to the downsides of being a "celebrity" in this world of which she writes. Alice was researching this field as she was studying for her Doctorate and she made many visits to San Francisco to meet with all kinds of people in the industry there. She has some wonderful interviews and stories from those in the tech Web world, and then goes on to make some excellent observations. Women's studies were part of her undergraduate work so it is fascinating that in this book, she discovers the whys and the wherefores of the male-driven web industry. Her interviews with many of the women are very telling. Again, a few of their stories are a little sad, and some of the women don't seem to recognize that they are only exacerbating the issues against themselves. Anyone in the industry or anyone who uses media like facebook should read this

Fascinating look at Silicon Valley's Insiders!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I must say that it did take me a bit to get into this book. I put it down for a while, thinking it was going to be a really heavy read. But, it turned out to be quite the fascinating book! It was a lovely walk down memory lane for me, with names like Kevin Rose, Veronica Belmont and Leo LaPorte! Many others are mentioned, but these happened to be the most familiar to me. The author refers to them as micro-celebrities. They are "famous" to certain people, and are expected to be more accessible to their fans than are Hollywood type celebrities. She takes the reader with her to the glitzy parties and day to day lives of these people. Also explored are the wannabes and how they attempt to integrate into the scene!

The latter parts of the book explore topics such as micro-celebrity in detail, along with life streaming and self-branding. Very well written, it flows well and is easy enough to read! Highly recommended for those interested in the inner workings of the people in Silicon Valley.

Another Must Read by Lynn Ames

I have read many of Lynn Ames books, but this is my new favorite.

Pros - Extremely well written (Lynn did her research)
Characters that you can not only relate to, but can fall in love with.
The kind of story that you don't want to end.

Cons - Too short - give me more!!! I was disappointed when I finished, I didn't want the story to end. This one begs for a sequel. (hint, hint Lynn!)

Another great read by the wonderful Lynn Ames! Get your copy now ladies, you won't regret it!

Enjoyed

Eloquently written and refreshing. It took me one day to read this I couldn't put it down. The characters came alive in this. I felt like I was in their world and it took the first page to capture the care the author has invested in the main characters. I did not rate this higher than three stars due to the unrealistic emotions. I am saying unrealistic because Rebecca and Dara cried at the drop of a hat. With what they had both suffered through in their childhood they would not have allowed such emotion to show so easily. The rest of the story was captivating I would even be willing to read a sequel if it was written.

Lynn Ames never disappoints.

It definitely fulfills my take of a perfect romantic novel. Famous gorgeous actress, beautiful smart professor, great supportive friends, all likeable people written with depth.

Emotions, attraction, intellect, looks and spirituality.
I am impressed and wished I did not finished reading that fast. It will be a long wait till her next novel.

Disjointed

I read Pride over Pity with the same guilty pleasure I feel when I watch Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2. Honestly, it's like watching a train wreck. I finished this book quickly, because 1) the writing was like reading a paper aimed at elementary school students, and 2) it was so lame, I wanted to see how much worse it got.

Of the girls on Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2, I actually thought Kailyn had the most ability to write a good book about her life. She seems intelligent enough to get her thoughts on a page coherently. Part of me wonders if this book hadn't been ghostwritten, if Kailyn's writing could have been better.

I had a lot of problems with the book though.

1. There was no reason to the order of the chapters. It wasn't a chronological narrative of her life. Things bounced around so much and the chapters seemed random and mismatched.

2. I felt like I was reading entries out of her diary, instead of something that is trying to tell a story and had been edited (and in this case, ghostwritten.)

3. Kailyn's really annoying. So much of the book comes off as preachy and holier-than-thou. Kailyn slams people who are religious pretty hard, while at the same time being incredibly defensive of people putting her down for her atheism. Hypocritical much?

4. And with her atheism in mind, WE GET IT. There were many times I found that she had to insert the fact that she was atheist, when it was incredibly irrelevant to the rest of the chapter. OK, you wanted to name your kid Moses potentially. It might be a biblical name but oooooh, you're atheist. Or the mention of how she was bothered by a bible verse being read at her legal marriage to Javi because she's atheist. I don't give a s*** what her religion is, but whatever it is, it's annoying to hear about it every few breaths. It also bothered me how she implied religious people lacked logic. I'm not even religious. I actually hold closer religious beliefs to Kailyn than anything, but I don't feel the need to put people down because of their beliefs. And I don't need to justify mine to anyone. Kailyn seems so full of being defensive and justifying who she is.

By the end of the book, I was so glad it was over. I didn't learn much about Kailyn from this book that isn't shown on TV. And it was written poorly. Adrienne Wenner might want to consider a new career, because if this is what her ghostwriting is putting out... Ugh.

A Little Disappointing

The book started off as a page-turner. It gave a very real and honest insight into Kail's past life and history. She begins the book as someone easily related to, someone who (like the rest of us) has gone through great turmoil and hardship.
However as the book goes on, it is drenched with put downs of those who come from a background of religion or faith. Or basically anyone who has an opinion other than hers, on just about anything. If you need proof, there's an entire chapter devoted to slamming organized religious communities. She attempts to put disclaimers saying she is open to and non judgemental of those who disagree with her, but there's a constant undertone (way beyond just that chapter) of belittling non-atheists and other backgrounds that completely challenges those statements of respect. I am respectful of every background or belief system- I take absolutely no offense to her atheism - but this was too aggressive and off putting. I could tell she would take offense to my beliefs.... It was like there was a definite agenda being shoved down my throat, and it felt like she was going to pop out of the pages, extremely angry at me for disagreeing. (Really I could feel it)
Aside from that, she has been taped and quoted several times saying "it's not like Farrah's book as far as editing, we put a lot of time into this." While the time spent organizing content may have taken years, I am astounded at how many periods were missing, and how many typos were present. I've never understood why such major errors are present, as they are completely prevented with a single read-over. While the content was different, the poor editing was not. I understand that she most likely has little to do with this oversight.
By the latter part of the book I found myself skipping pages and eventually skipping ahead to read the last chapter and putting it down due to the repetitive nature. Struggle struggle persevere preservere past past family family etc etc.
With all of this said, I 100% respect Kail for writing this, as I imagine though while it was probably therapeutic, it was also extremely brave to put such intimate details out into the world. She is one of my favorite moms of all the MTV's pregnancy related series', and she does an outstanding job of giving her precious boys a far better life than she had herself. I may have not enjoyed her overall tone in the book, the amateur editing, or the repetitive nature, but that does not change my respect for her as a person and a mother. Overall it was a somewhat entertaining and easy read. I think she is strong and beautiful, and I love the fundamental message she is trying to send through all of her media facets. As a fellow military spouse with a similar past, I say you go girl!

Not what I expected.... SPOILER ALERT

I choose to read this book, because I have followed the MTV 16 and pregnant series, as well as, Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2. I thought it would be interesting to get some depth to Kail and her life beyond what was captured on television. I also was interested in Jo's story before meeting Kail, so I bought it. I wish now I could return it. (SPOILER ALERT) There were a lot of things I could relate to in Kailyn's life (having an alcoholic mother, abortion, moving around, having sex at too young of an age, bipolar, etc). It did get a little repetitious and annoying to hear how she constantly looks at life from ONLY her own perspective. She came across as being very self absorb with a lack of empathy. Maybe this is just her immaturity and lack of life experience, but I found this to be frustrating and sad for her. The book felt more like a pity party then anything. To be honest, I could stand most of it and kept giving her the benefit of the doubt up until the anti-religion chapter. To read how it bothered her that the man who married them in court quoted a passage from the bible was too much. How can she say that she is fine with everyone's beliefs, but then state that? I actually felt bad for Javi, since he comes from a Catholic family. She is closed minded, but wait she continues to tell us she isn't? I do believe it was hard for her to open up and share all her life experiences and I do praise her for being honest, but parts of me felt she only did this for two reasons, one to make money off of book sales and two, to get her story out before someone else got to profit off of it, which made me actually walking away after reading this book feeling like I liked her a little less. I have tattoos, but I didn't need to hear her feelings about them. It's as though she used this book to defend her life decisions, choices and personal beliefs. I didn't read this book to hear about her tattoos, her being a mermaid or her religious views. I also thought it was sad how she depicted Jo (the father of her first child) and his family. They didn't need to let her in their home and I am sure they only ever got involved in Jo and her fights because they wanted them to make it and work for the baby. This showed me how immature she is not to sit back and be so grateful that not only did they let her in their home, but let her expose their life on television. Where is the gratitude? I am not sure if she understands that not everyone who drinks is a drunk or not everyone who doesn't like tattoos is judging someone who has them. I feel like she really could use an eye opener and some true life experience. This book felt more like opinions and her beliefs, then a story of her life and what happened. Not what I expected.

About the Author
ROBERT M. BOHM is professor of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He has also been a faculty member in the Departments of Criminal Justice at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1989–1995) and at Jacksonville State University in Alabama (1979–1989). From 1973 to 1974, he worked for the Jackson County Department of Corrections in Kansas City, Missouri, first as a corrections officer and later as an instructor/counselor in the Model Inmate Employment Program, a Law Enforcement Assistance Administration sponsored–work-release project. He received his PhD in Criminology from Florida State University in 1980. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters in the areas of criminal justice and criminology. Besides being the coauthor of Introduction to Criminal Justice, 4th ed. update (McGraw-Hill, 2007), he is the editor of The Death Penalty in America: Current Research, the author of A Primer on Crime and Delinquency Theory, 2nd ed., and Deathquest II: An Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Capital Punishment in the United States, 2nd ed., and an editor (with James R. Acker and Charles S. Lanier) of America’s Experiment with Capital Punishment: Reflections on the Past, Present, and Future of the Ultimate Sanction, 2nd ed., and Demystifying Crime and Criminal Justice (with Jeffery T. Walker). He has been active in the American Society of Criminology, the Southern Criminal Justice Association, and especially the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, having served as Trustee-at-Large (1987–90), Second Vice-President (1990–91), First Vice-President (1991–92), and President (1992–93). In 1989, he was selected as the Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Southern Criminal Justice Association. In 1999, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and, in 2001, he was presented with the Founder’s Award of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

KEITH N. HALEY is professor of Criminal Justice, teaching in both graduate and undergraduate degree programs in the School of Criminal Justice, and associate vice president for special projects at Tiffin University. Mr. Haley has also been the dean of the School of Criminal Justice, and the dean of the School of Off-Campus Learning at Tiffin University. He has acted as the primary contact for the TU MBA program in Bucharest, Romania, and the head of the Tiffin University Romania Study team that worked to establish a Master of Community Justice Administration degree program at the University of Bucharest. He has also served as coordinator of the criminal justice programs at Collin County Community College in Texas; executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission; chairman of the criminal justice program at the University of Cincinnati; police officer in Dayton, Ohio; community school director in Springfield, Ohio; director of the criminal justice program at Redlands Community College in Oklahoma; and electronics repairman and NCO in the U.S. Marine Corps. Haley holds a BS in Education from Wright State University and an MS in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. He is the author, coauthor, and/or editor of 12 books, several book chapters, and many articles in criminal justice publications. He has served as a consultant to many public service, university, business, and industrial organizations on management, online learning, criminal justice research, and memory skills. Haley is also the secretary of the police section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Haley received the 2001 Nikolai N. Khaladjan International Award for Innovation in Higher Education. The Khaladjan Award is given to the higher education program that is the most innovative and has the widest potential for impact on postsecondary education.

Pretty good book for the subject

Pretty good book for the subject, though a bit needlessly wordy (as most textbooks are).
Terrorism is a major topic throughout, which makes it much more interesting, but unfortunately that's as international as it gets, since this is a book on US law, not world law.
