This book definitely helped me after I divorced my 1st husband. It really helped me to be patient until God brought me the man that I was supposed to be with for the rest of my life. My parents and I were in a bookstore one day and my mother just randomly picked up this book. This book was the start to my Michelle McKinney Hammond obsession and cleanse. She has definitely helped me fix my life and be better for my now husband.

Awesome and on time read!

I am so grateful for this book. I prayed to God for something to read to help guide my misguided thoughts about myself and bring ready when my Boaz showed up. Well she definitely summed it up got me. Until God brings him my way be content in Jesus. Never place your desire for a man, husband and family higher than your desire to have a closer walk with God. Michelle told me like it was. She helped me discover my self worth, challenged me to change my prayers, surrender my heart and WHOLE body to God and revealed to me I'm worth the man that seeks me and desires to love me unconditionally because God made him just for me. What God has for me it is for me and nothing I can do to change that. A negative attitude, lack of Esther traits, lack of a meek personality and lack of trust in God will delay what God has for you. We are our own stumbling blocks. Get out the way and allow God to do his job! Trust Jesus!

A Great Player Needs a Better Book

Ukrainian GM Ivanchuk is approaching the end of 25 years as an elite GM. He joins Keres & Rubinstein as a frequent world #2 player, who never got to play for title. In his early 20's, he broke the Karpov/Kasparov domination at Linares in 1991. The book-index lists 58 GM tournament first prizes. His positional style is near perfect, full of creative ideas; he presents deep & beautiful plans and astonishing attacks/combinations. Ivanchuk plays almost every opening (there are 21 different openings represented in this book, often introducing important novelties). Along with his age-peers (Anand, Kamsky, Adams, Gelfand, Shirov ..) Ivanchuk's play is part of the current standard of deeply researched openings, aggressive no-holds barred middle games with razor sharp endgame play. Four of the these peers have already produced high quality game collections with outstanding notes.

I was excited to finally see this book. New In Chess has produced: a well bound & nicely printed text, with adequate indexes, great cover photos, and 2"x2" head photos scattered in the text. The selected games are terrific. On the rare occassions I have seen Ivanchuk notes they have been brillant, but he is infrequent in publishing analysis. Although he can often be viewed on-line at event post-game interviews, which are a real treat. The opponents are cream of the GM world. The first 30 games cover late 1980's to 2000, with the remaining 70 games 2000-2012. The notes are pretty good, about 2-3 pages per game. Kalinichenko has used his database to provide plenty of opening references to other games. Occassionally he makes a clinker remark like informing the reader that the Ruy Open variation is an alterantive to the main line (duh?!). The writer sticks to established ideas on his judgement calls on opening lines. The book has a 12-page bio based on research of primarily Russian/Ukrainian sources -- it's content is unremarkable for anyone who has been reading New in Chess or internet sources. Kalinichenko does not seem to have had direct input from Ivanchuk in writing this book. The Bio includes an odd 'secondhand interview' of the writer asking questions about Ivanchuk & then the answers come from other published sources. Ivanchuk's personality does not really shine through, nothing new is revealed, with only the brief comment on Ivanchuk's well-known mental stresses.

The games are presented with little competitive context or competive color. There is limited comment on strategic issues. Plentiful offering of variation calculations, which seem accurate & computer checked. The endgame coverage lacks depth. Kalinichenko is a correspondence GM & an experienced chess-writer. Yet I feel the middle game notes do not fully unpick or delve into the thinking of this combinational genius or explain subtle play fully. Nor does he address how Ivanchuk can rachet up the tightness in complex positions and make his pieces dance. There is immense beauty in Ivanchuk's playing style. ---So for a reasonable price, I got a collection of wonderful games in a nice looking book with very good, but not great notes.

A collection of 104 gems that need a little more polishing

In 1989, 20 year old Ukrainian grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk astonished the world by winning the Linares super-tournament. Two years later, he defeated both Karpov and Kasparov while winning the tournament for the second time. Remarkable results at such a tender age! Surely we were seeing the advent of the next world champion ... but life is not quite so simple. At key moments, right when he has seemed poised to ascend the chess Olympus, Chuky has lost his footing and fallen over a metaphorical ledge. Author and correspondence GM Nikolay Kalinichenko introduces his subject with a light biography that chronicles some of his most exhilarating victories and excruciating stumbles. For example, he shows Chuky cruising to victory in game 5 of his 2002 world championship match against Ponomariov--when suddenly, on move 47, he loses the thread. With 2 horrendous blunders he squanders the victory, then loses the game. In the short match he cannot recover, and his best opportunity to win the world championship vanishes.

If from the competitive perspective Chuky has been an enigma, though, Kalinichenko helps us see that from the artistic perspective Chuky's career has been a major triumph. In 104 annotated games he shows Chuky launching brilliancy after brilliancy to defeat the world's strongest players. He sacrifices a pawn against Kasparov (Linares, 1991) to plant his knight on a beautiful outpost. He gives up his queen against Shirov (Wijk aan Zee, 1996), but his minor pieces dominate. He sacs a knight on f5 at the 1985 World Junior Championship, then gives a clinic on exploiting the weakened dark squares around Mishra's king. Against Smeets (Tata Steel, 2010) he tosses a pawn to activate his dark-squared bishop, then eschews material gain in favor of an irresistible mating attack. And so forth. Every one of these games is not only beautiful, but worthy of study.

Kalinichenko's annotations are quite capable, highlighting the critical decisions, the bright ideas, and the lost opportunities for both sides. However, he often seems to be adorning Rybka evaluations with a few words, rather than weighing and explaining the dynamic factors. For example, Chuky's victory over Kasparov in Linares (1991) seems counter-intuitive; Kasparov had the 2 bishops in a reasonably open position, yet he never really got into the game. How did Chuky manage to win? Kalinichenko offers plenty of variations ending in evaluations of "white is better" or "black can hold," but he never goes deeper. He could have mentioned Chuky's space advantage, or even more important his durable initiative, which required prophylaxis at key junctures, but he gives no such explanation. Analyzing Ivanchuk - Mishra 1985, Kalinichenko briefly mentions that 22....g6 "seriously weakens the dark squares," but he says nothing about Chuky's instructive exploitation of the weakness. If Kalinichenko had provided more detail about the dark-square attack, rather than settling for phrases like "with decisive advantage to white," he could have made this game an instructional classic.

Even if this book does not realize its full potential, it nevertheless, like Ivanchuk's career, is an artistic triumph. I have greatly enjoyed studying Chuky's games; how can you not enjoy these classics? Recommended for players rated 1700 and up.

One In A Million Giftedness

Amazing games from a genius whose penchant for emotional highs and lows has detracted from his playing. Ivanchuk is perhaps like Rubinstein, Keres, Bronstein, and Leko -- incredibly strong grandmasters who never quite reached the pinnacle of chess by winning the world championship. His playing is nonetheless reminiscent of Rudolf Spielmann, Mikhail Tal and Rashid Nezhmetdinov; brilliant, imaginative, combative, and magical. A longer biography might have improved the book, but the games speak volumes about his inspired playing.

Thought Provoking Stream-of-Consciousness Narrative

Life and Death of Harriett Frean follows, as one might expect, the early life through to the death of Harriett Frean. She was brought up to be a perfect Victorian lady, and taught early on to be "morally beautiful", which in turn led her to become prideful in any little self-sacrifice she made. As a result, she lived a narrow existence, self-righteously congratulating herself on how she lived her life.

There is very little descriptive passages or even action. Instead, the story is told mainly in thoughts and conversation, in the stream-of-consciousness style. This is extremely effective in telling Harriett's story.

It is a short book, and easy to read, but still manages to be quite thought provoking. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a stream-of-consciousness narrative; other readers might not find it as engrossing.

A Strange Little Story

I am currently interested in reading books written during the turn of the century. This is why I was led to this little book. It is small enough that I read it in one sitting.

It was a strange, sad tale, and I had to keep reminding myself of the time period in which this piece was written so I could view the writing from another vantage point. It helped to read the introduction to set the mood for this book, plus it helped to better understand the background of the time period.

I did enjoy Sinclair's character descriptions; they were so thorough that the reader could conjure a mental image of the person. If you like period pieces, this one certainly portrays the constrained life of a woman of the time.

Amusingly ordinary

The title says it all...The story started when Harriett Frean was a baby and her mother cooed over her, reciting a nursery rhyme. It ended when she was dying at the age of sixty-eight, while she listened to the same nursery rhyme from somewhere at the back of her head, and her last words were "Mamma". If the author had made the title "The Life and Death of Spinster Harriett Frean", then there's nothing more to say in this review.

Harriett was an old maid; otherwise, hers was a very ordinary life. It's amusing that a story can be woven out of something ordinary; it's even part of Project Gutenberg! Probably, it was really the author's idea to write a story about the ordinary life of an "almost recluse". Somehow it has to be told; somehow the world has to know that there are many Harriett Freans out there.

In her life story, one thing stands out: Harriett never wanted to disappoint. When she was a little girl, she vowed to always obey her parents because she saw firsthand how disappointed they can be when she disobeyed. As a woman, she chose to let go of the man she loved to protect her best friend. But her desire to please did not always end in a happy note, as one of the characters bluntly pointed out to her. In the end, she was all alone.

We have a lot of old maids in our family. I have an old aunt who lives with her cats. She has opened her house to boarders so technically, she doesn't live alone. But boarders come and go, so she really does not have deep relationships with anyone in her household. This story made me think about her, and if there's anything good that came out of it, it's my renewed vow to not forget to keep in touch with her.

A detailed large format book...

This work has many color photographs and color plates of the uniforms and insignia of the National Socialist German Workers' Party ("Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei") or NSDAP. It first covers the lay-out of the organization rank structure from 1932 through 1945. It has original color plates from Nazi German publications showing the different caps, ranks and collar patches. Chapter Two discusses "The Ortsgruppe" which was the local level of the Nazi Party. Fine examples of uniforms are shown by both original and uniform display photos. This pattern is continued thereafter. The book is good for the military hobbyist and student of World War II.

Other chapters cover:

Ch. 3: The Kreis - District level, similar to a county.
Ch. 4: The Gau - similar to the state level. The head was the "Gauleiter".
Ch. 5: The Reich - national level. In change of national level departments. The men were known as "Reichsleiters". Again nice photos of the men, their tunics, shoulder boards, etc.
Ch. 6: NS Schools and Party Court. This was the party school system and court system (to rule on party cases and disputes).
Ch. 7: Headgear.
Ch. 8: Pennants and Flags. Including vehicle pennants or "Hoheitstrager".
Ch. 9: Armbands.
Ch. 10: Collar Tabs.
Ch. 11: Medals and Regalia.
Ch. 12: Period Publications and Documents.

Footnote: This book does rely heavily on another book listed in its bibliography: "Cloth Insignia of the NSDAP & SA" by John R. Angolia, R. James Bender Publishing Co. (1985). I own that book as well and have reviewed it (rating it at 5 stars). It has been out of print for a number of years.

excellent reference resource

The photos are large and clear. The details are profuse. I used this as reference for a political illustration where pinpoint accuracy was paramount. This book filled the bill. I realize the applications for such a text are limited. However when you need the information you need it. I would recommend this book unequivocally to anyone who needs this specific information. It is informative and very well formatted.

Another winner from schiffer publishing company. They always seem to put out the best reference books in the third reich area. While i'm not a collector of uniforms, I do enjoy studying the photographs and info in this book. This reference covers a great portion of the nsdap uniforms and has excellent photos to show in the field and being displayed in private collections. Although i have more of an interest in the german armed forces rather than the beureaucrats, I still find this interesting, and this would go well with any other reference material for uniforms and regalia.

Devastatingly beautiful

I've been sitting on this review for a couple of days after finishing the book, chewing the story over and over, trying to digest everything that happened, trying to get over all the heartbreak and emotional pain this book has caused me. I am still working on all that. I honestly don't know how to review this book. It was both exhilarating and sad, inspiring and depressing, hopeful and dark. I got so close to the characters - to Theo in particular - they felt more like friends than just fictional creations. They made me laugh, swoon and then ugly cry (the ugliest cry since The Fault in Our Stars). This book - this story - really hit me hard and I am still trying to get my s*** together.

This is a story of a girl saved by the boy who couldn't be saved himself. It's such a beautiful tale. Incredibly honest, gritty, moving and profoundly affecting. Possibly life changing. Probably even life saving.

I want to tell you about the plot. About Theo and Violet. About how they met, how their lives began to intertwine with each other, wrapping themselves around one another and creating the most breathtaking symbiosis of all times. I want to tell you about their feelings - for each other, for their families, for the rest of the world. Their fears and struggles and dreams. Their wandering project, all the places they've visited, all the things they left behind, all the post it notes and their meaning. I do want to tell you about it all, but at the same time I don't. I just can't. You need to experience all that by yourself. This book demands it. There's simply no other way.

To me, this book is perfect. The more I think about it - and I do think about it a lot - the more I understand. The more I understand, the more I appreciate it. Its gentle beauty, its insightfulness and sensitivity in handling such incredibly difficult subjects, its message - everything about it is perfect. The writing style (so lyrical, so transcendental, so compelling), the literary references, the complexity and all the underlying themes and messages... You don't always see all these things right away, you don't always catch what passes between the lines, but later on, when you go back and think about certain events, the meaning of certain thoughts and conversations, it really hits you hard and renders you speechless. It knocks the air out of you, quite literally.

I'm not gonna lie to you, this book sneaked up on me. I wasn't prepared for how much this story would affect me, the pain I felt while reading the final chapters was almost physical. It weighed down on me, making it harder to breathe. I realized where this story was going and I didn't want to get there. It was excruciating. But also oddly beautiful.

What more can I tell you? Read it. You really should.

A poignant, beautiful, touching story about loss and depression, that will make you smile, laugh and cry.

Beautifully written, engrossing, will make you smile, laugh, cry and break your heart. This book draws you in like stepping in quicksand (anyone who has read the book will know the reason I used this example as it is used by Finch). While it is a great story about loss and how to deal with it, along with the pains of teenage fitting in, being shunned, etc, along with discovering love and what that means, this book deals very forcefully and in your face with teen depression and suicide. In fact, at the end of the book, the author tells her own sad experiences with it, making it clear how she was able to write this story with such force and such heart wrenching feelings.

But, but, but, this is a beautiful book! It is so compelling, and you get so attached to the characters, and their love story, that it is an absolutely beautiful story for anyone of any age. The two main characters, Violet and Finch, come from two very different worlds. Violent was very popular, with the in crowd, until she lost her sister in a car accident which she feels guilty about is suffering from severe depression and gets more and more isolated from her friends. Finch, "The Freak" as he is labelled by almost all his classmates, is ostracized and constantly made to feel he really is a freak. Then one day when he is standing on the Belltower of the school, contemplating jumping, suddenly Violent appears there beside him, contemplating the exact same thing. Ironically, Finch saves Violet, but everyone at the school thinks Violent saved him, since he a Freak and has been noted as being suicidal. Finch, a genuinely nice guy, never tells anyone that he actually saved her, and for that Violet is so truly thankful to him. Then they end up doing a class project together, and in each other they find a true deep friendship, that eventually becomes more.

This is a touching love story, but it is so much more than that. It deals with real issues about teen depression and loss. If you enjoyed reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, you will likely love this book as well.

One Of The Best Books I Have Ever Read

Forgive me for any typos, for I am reviewing this while still crying over the book.
All The Bright Places is a beautiful novel that addresses the topic of suicide and does not shy away from the darkness of the mind of a suicidal teen. The two main characters, Violet and Finch, both are dealing with their own separate issues and trying to survive, or "stay Awake", while fighting their own minds. Violet Markey is still grieving over the death of her older sister, and blames herself for the fatal car accident. Meanwhile, Theodore Finch is trying to control his own mind as each day brings more darkness for him. They meet when both are contemplating committing suicide by jumping off the same bell tower at the same moment, causing Finch to talk Violet quite literally off the ledge and convince her to continue living. As Finch helps Violet to heal, he spirals deeper into depression and struggles to claw out of it.
Violet and Finch are very realistic characters who deal with common issues as well as mental health issues. They are both relatable and their relationship and conversations manage to lighten a book surrounding the idea of death.
With quotes from other well known novels, books, and poems, Jennifer Niven weaves a beautiful tale of love, loss, and the fight against ones own mind.
Excuse me as I continue to cry some more...
