Progress and Religion was perhaps the most influential of all Christopher Dawson's books, establishing him as an interpreter of history and a historian of ideas. It has been described as a brilliant work of synthesis, for in this single volume he outlined his main thesis for the history of culture, which was his life's work. Anthropology, sociology, philosophy, religion, and history formed the backdrop for the key idea of his thought―namely, that religion is the soul of a culture and that a society or culture which has lost its spiritual roots is a dying culture. To Dawson, a return to the Christian culture that had formed Western civilization was the only remedy for a world adrift.

Dawson was writing in a period between the two great wars of the twentieth century, a time when some thought that the idea of progress had finally been discredited by the carnage and barbarism of the First World War. Progress and Religion was clearly intended to challenge the doctrine of progress, the rather na�ve but persistent belief that 'in every day and in every way the world grows better and better.'

Dawson argued that Western civilization was at a turning point and confronted with two real choices: reappropriate a vital Christian culture or move increasingly toward more dangerous and alienated expressions of consumerism and totalitarianism. In Progress and Religion, he contends that no culture could truly thrive if cut off from its religious roots.

Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) was one the premier Roman Catholic thinkers of this century. Dawson's central concern was the relationship between religion and culture. Dawson drew on an extensive knowledge of history, philosophy, sociology and theology to illuminate this connection from the beginnings of history to the modern age.
Although some of his books remain in print, Catholic University of America Press is printing new editions of his most important works. This edition of Progress & Religion contains a forward by Dawson's daughter Christina (1922-2001) and an introduction by the well-known sociologist Mary Douglas.
Progress & Religion, which came out in 1929, is perhaps Dawson's most important work. Dawson argues that at the center of any great civilization is its religion, and this religion animates and gives it a sense of purpose. This is particularly the case with Christianity. "[T]he victory of the Church in the 4th century was not, as so many modern critics would have us believe, the natural culmination of the religious evolution of the ancient world. It was, on the contrary, a violent interruption of that process which forced European civilization out of its own orbit . . . ." [p. 126.] The Western Church vivified society by breaking with oriental spiritualism and showing that "human intelligence . . . finds its natural activity in the sphere of the sensible and particular." [p. 137.]
It would make an interesting study to compare the work of Dawson with that of Robert Nisbet. Like Nisbet, Dawson was learned in the area of sociology and drew upon an extensive knowledge of sociologists such as Le Play, Comte and Durkheim. They both saw Rousseau as one the chief villains. As Dawson said, Rousseau effected a "new Reformation" and was the ideological godfather of the French Revolution. They both wrote extensively on the idea of progress. However, whereas Nisbet was "pious skeptic" (according to Prof. Gottfried), Dawson was a believer and his work contains a greater sense of urgency. Indeed, some of his writings between the wars were quite prophetic.

In his overarching masterpiece, Dawson proves himself once again one of the most brilliant scholars of the twentieth century. The profound relation between religion and culture, the essential and forming influence of Christianity on Western civilization, and the secular crisis of the modern age is demonstrated impecably by Dawson here. As one professor has said, one can measure one's liberal arts education by how much one understands of this book.

About the Author
Susan has been a journalist for more than 30 years and has worked for regional and national newspapers and magazines, and in regional television. She has strong links with the regional media and with the National Council for the Training of Journalists – with whom she has worked as an assessor. She is also a former judge of the Yorkshire Press Awards. Susan is Course Leader in Postgraduate Print and Magazine Journalism. About the Author
Emmanuel Hadjiandreou is originally from South Africa, but learned his craft in a German bakery. In the UK he has worked for Gordon Ramsay and Daylesford Organic, an award-winning organic farm shop in Oxfordshire. He currently teaches bread-making classes at The School Of Artisan Food in Nottinghamshire, UK. His sourdough bread, stollen and other bread creations have won him several awards. This is his first book.

I love me some carbs...

Hi Guys,

First time bread maker here. This book has helped me make some good bread. I started with the first page and am working my way through the book.

The author does a good job guiding you through the recipes that he provides. However, I still find my self looking up certain things on youtube as I'm more of a visual learner. Several recipes are in this book. Lots of sourdoughs, french breads, italian breads, bagels and sweet pastries as well. I'm not sure if I got an updated version of the book (as others have stated there are only measurements in grams) but he has the measurements in grams/cups so us Americans who decided to forget metric can still put the recipes together. The pictures are awesome in this book too. If you like to decorate you could leave this book out on your coffee table or in your kitchen.

Only negative I have found so far is (as I am a first time bread maker) I find that I don't always get the right rise I should. I do use the exact methods and measurements the author does. I have seen other recipes using sugar or more yeast so I have changed that.

All in all a good buy and I am happy it is my first book. I find it very helpful and will keep baking through it.

How To Make Bread

This is a well written and illustrated book and the few recipes I have tried have turned out really good. He is in England so the pan sizes do not fit our American sizes, most recipes are for a 1 1/2 lb loaf which is great for me. Am just getting started baking artisan bread, using levain in place of yeast, so I have found all his photos with great detail really helpful. His Chocolate bread with currants is delicious, Walnut with figs is another winner that I have enjoyed. I bake the breads in a Romertopf or Emile Henry FlameProof Enamel Stewpot as I have an electric oven so misting it with water is not a good idea. The book has a nice variety of recipes as well as a section on pastry. I think it merits a place in a home bakers library.

You have got to make the Chocolate Sourdough

The illustrations in this book are amazing. They give detailed step by step visual instructions for people like me who need to see how it's done. This is a good intermediate bread book that will have you baking an artisan quality loaf with the first recipe. All of the yeast recipes call for fresh yeast. That's kind of hard to come by in the US. I used SAF instant yeast and was fine. These loaves require a bit of babysitting for the first hour or so but then there is a nice long fermentation time so you don't have to stick around while the bred rises. If you are a new bread baker and this is your first time you may want to start off with a simpler bread book like The Bread Bible by Beth Hensperger. If you love bread this will make a wonderful addition to your bread book library!

Concise and easy to understand.The book provides overview on big data and analytics that successfully used in both private and government sectors.The author easily explains how big data and analytics are used in various different ways.It is very helpful for anyone who is looking for solution to solve big data problems. This book is not about technology of big data. analytics or any type of predictive models it is about how organizations wisely use big data to deliver value for their businesses.

Great real world insights on big data

This book provided great insights into how big data is applied across many industries. Its easy to read and each page confirms to a standardised template making it simple to use as a reference book.

I would recommend this book to those new to big data as an initial starting point to its many applications. This book is otherwise to light on information to those that already have hands on experience and wants to dig deeper.

Great high level summaries, but very little detail

If you're looking for a very simple overview of how big data is being put to use then this is the right book. I was hoping for more details than were available in this particular volume. The stories are high level summaries that take between 5-10 minutes each to read. This is great if all you're looking for is anecdotal information about big data so you can talk to others about the topic. If you're looking to truly learn about big data and the technology that helps us take advantage of it I think you'd need to find another book.

Given the cost of the book I'm surprised at the content inside of it. It is definitely not worth 30 dollars. If you're fortunate enough to have a work subscription to something like Safari Books etc. check that out, it might be included free.

Promises more than it delivers

One of the factors that attracted me to the book was that it is written by someone who has a disciplined background (in the military). As you've probably read in every book you've ever read on trading. Discipline is an important issue. I was hoping for something around the area of discipline, but there is just the standard utterances such as control your loses. Also he claims to make a living from trading though it is unclear how much is training and how much is trading.
It covers most of the standard stuff: patterns, indicators (though he introduces some of his own) and most especially Fibonacci numbers. Several chapters concentrate on 'Fibonacci Friends' as Netto calls them. Problem is that Fibonacci numbers are a bit like astrology - either you believe in them and you use them and they work for you. Or they don't. As a trader I must confess that I have had limited success with Fibs.
About two thirds of the way through the book he introduces Netto numbers. A fancy name for making decisions based on weightings he gives to various factors. For instance he gives 10 points for patterns and so on. I've seen and used similar approaches in e-books I have purchased.
The problem with this (seemingly sensible)approach is that it assumes longer term trading. You simply don't have the time to work at this level if you are day trading with a time span of a few minutes to say 60 minutes. The author does not make clear distinctions between day and longer term trading.
Should you buy / read the book?
Yes, if you want to get a new and fairly good angle on Fibonacci numbers, newer indicators and weighted decision making.
Possibly if you want to investigate yet another variant in the hundreds of trading approaches out there.
No, if you are skeptical regarding Fibonacci numbers. At any rate the book did not change my mind.
I am giving it three stars because although it is fairly well written there are some major errors in the first few charting diagrams. These charts were very confusing.

One Shot - One Kill Trading

I have fortunately read numerous books on trading as well as technical and fundamental analysis and I have no doubt that each book has contributed to my current knowledge of and interest in trading the markets. Unfortunately (I am not blaming the books), they all left me looking for more guidance in formulating a trading strategy.

John Netto's book appealed to my burning need to develop a coherent trading strategy. John's writing style makes his book easy to read without becoming too technical to grasp the underlying principles. This is a book that will reveal more each time it is read and it certainly needs to be read more than once if the reader is to benefit from John's approach to trading. My only regret is that I did not read this book a lot earlier in my quest for knowledge of trading systems.

Are there better books on trading? - If you like lots of technical detail, the answer is probably yes! However few books are going to provide the required level of detail with a workable trading plan all written in an easy to read style.

The final point I wish to make is that, thanks to the power of the internet and John's willingness, I was able to clarify an issue on the Detrended Oscillator. John responded to my query within an hour! [...]

I found One Shot - One Kill Trading to be a breath of fresh air rounding out a number of intuitions that I had about the market. I did find a few things as well about the book that were perplexing, and I had to reread a couple of times before I really understood the point that Netto was trying to convey, in particular his Netto Numbers. What I liked the most about the book was the fairly straightforward explanation of how he gets into positions and how he trades. In this regard, the book is very powerful...I have found that since using parts of his method in my own trading that when I get in, I am usually up money in the trade and can take profits as opposed to being down right away which is a problem I had been dealing with.

I have used Fibonacci numbers off and on for some time and I must say the book did a great job of explaining how to use his Fibonacci friends to enter positions. Netto puts a different twist on Fib Numbers in Chapter five of trading inflection points that I have never come across. I was able to correspond with him via email from his site ([...]) and actually had a nice phone call with him as well where he reinforced the concepts in this book. I have to say, I never expected that he would be so responsive and I thought he might try to sell me something, but he was very approachable and I felt he genuinely wanted me to succeed as a trader. Like every book though, there were some drawbacks and I wish the charts in this book could have been a little more seamless to use as they were not as user friendly as they could have been. With that said, this is one of the best trading books I have read because it presents a trading plan that is easy to understand and is grounded in some solid trading advice and based on my own personal results has improved.

Scrutinizing state authorities’ efforts to impose the law in what was considered a lawless countryside, Gotkowitz shows how, time and again, indigenous activists shrewdly exploited the ambiguous status of the state’s pro-Indian laws to press their demands for land and justice. Bolivian indigenous and social movements have captured worldwide attention during the past several years. By describing indigenous mobilization in the decades preceding the revolution of 1952, A Revolution for Our Rights illuminates a crucial chapter in the long history behind present-day struggles in Bolivia and contributes to an understanding of indigenous politics in modern Latin America more broadly.

Elizabeth Bennet was the creation of Jane Austen for her classic eighteenth century novel, "Pride and Prejudice." There have dozens of film adaptations and even a musical version as well. Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet was an intelligent British woman in a male dominated world. She has to get married or risk a life in poverty.

Harold Bloom has compiled a book of essays with regards to Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Austen. For Jane Austen fans, they will have plenty to think about upon reading this book. There is a character profile of Elizabeth Bennet in the back of the book and recommend reading before you read the essays. The character profile helps refresh your memory of the novel and character if you have been away for awhile. The character profile is useful even if you haven't read the novel itself.
