Great Book to read in time for the 150th anniversary of the Lincoln Assassination

Lewis Powell is my favorite person from the Conspiracy, that being because I was around the same age as he was when I started reading about the Lincoln assassination and we're both from Florida. I even visited his gravesite in Geneva, Florida. I find his whole story fascinating. He is most definitely the mystery man of the Lincoln Conspiracy. I really enjoyed reading the first book and it was great getting an updated version of the book as I believe the first was published in 1992 and a lot of new information has been found in the 20 + years since. Betty does a great job at painting a very clear picture of what life was like for Lewis. She seems like a very interesting lady and I'd love to meet her someday. It's interesting to try to see why he went down the path he did, different accounts describe him as feeling no remorse for what he did, others describe him as being remorseful. Overall a great read, I love the descriptions from men and women alike saying how handsome he was in all the testimonials, its true after all. It's sad that his family didn't claim his body for whatever reason but very interesting how his skull was recently found (in 1994.) It makes you wonder what would have happened to him if he had lived. Would he have been sentenced to life at hard labor in the Dry Tortugas only to be pardoned 3 years later? We may never know.

I'm fascinated by lewis Thornton Powell. Thank you betty for this great book. It is sad, that he was hanged. The only one who deserved death was J,W,Booth!

A great and unique contribution to this field

Rarely do we find a Spanish dictionary with etymology as we're so used to when we only consult English dictionaries. Spanish is by far the most taught language in the US and one of the most in many countries in the world, which makes lack of etymological dictionaries in the market an ostensible hole. Before I found Dr. Edward A. Roberts' dictionary, I had been using Guido G�mez de Silva's "Breve diccionario etimol�gico de la lengua espa�ola" and the online Wiktionary. While Dr. Silva did a very good job and his book used to be either the only or clearly the best such dictionary, it has left out some words in order to be "breve" or brief. Dr. Roberts' book is an excellent contribution to this field, serving as both a complement to and a replacement of Dr. Silva's "Breve diccionario", and as a bonus, the book is in English, if Spanish itself is still a language hurdle to the reader.

Etymology is not academic study only scholars care about. It's also a tremendously helpful tool in vocabulary learning, perhaps except for young children, who prefer rote memory instead. For example, to remember "seguir", a cognate "sequel" can be found by looking up the etymology of both words. A less obvious one is "coraz�n". Once you know it's cognate with English "core", the word is not that hard to remember.

These two-volume books are highly recommended for adults learning Spanish, if you prefer meaningful association to rote memory, and of course for those that just wish to have a dictionary on hand that provides rich history of this beautiful language as well as its culture. Although the same information is sometimes available in other books (such as Dr. Silva's book) or online (such as Wiktionary.org), none is more complete as this "Comprehensive" dictionary.

About the Author
Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Before retiring, Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years, where he honed an approach to teaching and writing that forms the foundation for his textbooks. Mike has been writing for over 35 years and currently has fifteen books in print. His books have been awarded both Texty and McGuffey awards from TAA.
Mike is a member of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America and the Text and Academic Authors Association, and received the TAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. His influence in the field of mathematics extends to his four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for a college textbook publishing company; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Disappointing Start

It's Christmas break and our kids are working the problems from the on line version of this book. I am disappointed that the answer key for the Chapter 0 test has two answers wrong. For problem 13 which is, "While visiting an orchard, the Williams family picked 98 apples, 49 oranges, and 52 lemons, and 103 limes. Approximately how much fruit did the family pick in total that day?" , the correct answer is 300 which is not a possible choice. The book answer key incorrectly lists 200 which is the wrong answer.

For problem 22 which is, "Anisa wants her pet angelfish to have at least 72 in3 of swimming room. If the base of the aquarium is 1 foot by 3 feet, how deep does she need to fill the tank?" , the correct answer is 1/6 of an inch which is not one of the answer choices.

The text of the book does appear to be clear. However, the layout of the book is very busy, which makes the pages cluttered and potentially overstimulating.

I wouldn't normally make such a fuss about two incorrect problems in the first chapter test but the other algebra book offered to Kentucky 8th graders is horrid!
