About the Author
Robert M. Bohm is a Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. A prolific author and speaker, Professor Bohm’s work has appeared in numerous publications. He is a frequent presenter and speaker at meetings and seminars of a variety of professional associations, including the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and the Southern Criminal Justice Association. Professor Bohm is a past-president (1992-93) and Fellow (1999) of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, from which he has also received the Founder’s Award (2001) and the Bruce Smith, Sr. Award (2008).

About the Author
John Ormsbee Simonds, who died in May 2005, was one of the 20th century's most important figures in landscape architecture and environmental planning. He was recognized worldwide for his visionary thinking and innovative spirit. Mr. Simonds' work and career spanned over 70 years, bridging an era during which the profession of landscape architecture expanded from a small number of individuals in the early 1900s to today's more than 30,000 of the most important land use and environmental planners in the United States. His many contributions, including Landscape Architecture, helped lay the groundwork for the focus on the environmentally responsible planning and design of today. Mr. Simonds was President and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, which awarded him its highest honor, the ASLA Medal, and its one-time Centennial President's Medal. He was a member of the President's Task Force on the Environment and the Florida Governor's Task Force on Natural Resources, and was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Design in Great Britain.

Barry W. Starke has been a leader in the profession of landscape architecture for over 30 years. He graduated with a degree in landscape architecture from the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967. While at Berkeley, he was introduced to the first edition of Landscape Architecture, which became a major influence on his career. In 1974, he co-founded the award-winning, multidisciplinary landscape architecture and environmental design firm Earth Design Associates, Inc., and continues to serve as President. In 1988, he was elected to the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Architecture, where he taught Professional Practice. Mr. Starke served as the Centennial President of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1999, leading ASLA's 100th-anniversary celebration. He is a Fellow of the ASLA, is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and currently serves as vice-chair of the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation. In 2003, Mr. Starke received the inaugural M. Meade Palmer Medal from the Virginia Chapter of the ASLA for outstanding contributions to landscape architecture.

Great overview of landscape architecture

This is really THE seminal instroductory book to landscape architecture. It's not really specific enough to be a true reference book, but it covers such a vast range of topics that it would be unrealistic to expect it to be. Instead, Simonds did a fantastic job of summarizing an amazingly broad field one subject at a time. Still, it is not so broad that the reader will fail to see the trees through the forest. It does include a lot of very helpful illustrations and explanations about such topics as spatial relationships and how they create different environments (and subsequently a particular design might be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the circumstances). But that is just one small sample of the kind of valuable lessons this book is filled with. I often start with this book when I approach a subject that is new to me because it gets me on the right track. In that sense, it's not just for beginners. And the 4th edition contains much-needed updates of the outdated photographs that are in the 3rd edition.

About the Author
Bojana Mojsov was born in Skopje, Macedonia. She is a celebrated Egyptologist and has worked in the Egyptology Departments of both the Metropolitan and Brooklyn Museums in New York. She has also acted as an advisor to the American Research Center in Cairo on restoring the tomb of Sety I in the Valley of the Kings, and as an advisor on the new collections at the National Museum in Khartoum, Sudan.

I expected more

I found reading this book to be very frustrating. The cover claims that Osiris will be put into context with Christianity and other ideas. Actually, there is very little of this in most of the text. I expected more of the book but it did not deliver.
There are distracting spelling errors missed by the proofreaders throughout, which just added to my frustration, e.g., "wander" instead of "wonder".

I have read a great number of books on Ancient Egypt and so, therefore, knew much of the history. The book starts relatively well and describes ideas about Osiris in the Old Kingdom. But the author had a decision to make about how to present concepts of Osiris in the New Kingdom and did something with the text that was difficult to understand. A rapid-fire history of the reigns of several pharoahs is given in just a few pages, presumeably as background, and then views of Osiris are given in a subsequent chapter. If one did not understand the history of Egypt before reading this book one would certainly not even know what was going on. Some things are left out, others rapidly glossed over, and some things mere speculation on the author's part with no documentation or background. Many paragraphs start out with a statement, veer off into another idea that is tantalizing, but the paragraph ends abruptly with a statement that has nothing to do with the idea presented at the beginning of the paragraph. I found this very distracting and difficult to follow. In short, I was disappointed at how badly it was written especially in the middle chapters.

I better enjoyed Joann Fletcher's Amenhotep III book. It was well illustrated, had one subject like this book, but fully discussed the history in a well-written manner.

Rather meandering and careless

This book is arranged chronologically, which might be useful for seeing how Osiris and his myth developed over time. However, it spends too much time describing wider events in Egypt, so much so that a lot of it feels like a rehash of Religion and Magic in Ancient Egypt. The book has to include historical context, of course, but much of the time it simply wanders off onto tangents. While it does describe many aspects of the worship of Osiris, it rarely does so in great depth, and because the text rambles so much, the relevant information is kind of hidden by digressions.

More serious are misleading or inaccurate statements. For example, Mojsov says "References to the Mysteries of Osiris evoked secret rituals reserved for the initiated." While most Egyptians would not have been allowed to see many of the rituals in Osiris' honor at Abydos, this wording is liable to make people imagine some sort of priestly brotherhood of initiates--an old image of ancient Egypt that is inspired more by Greek and Roman initiations, and even Freemasonry, than by anything in Egypt itself. She also constantly refers to Osiris and his family in terms that evoke Christian concepts. Yes, it's very possible that elements from Egyptian religion influenced Christianity, and scholars should not simply ignore that possibility. But loose similarity does not prove direct influence, and not many people have studied the question as rigorously as they should. More importantly, it does a disservice to Egyptian religion to imply that Egyptian and Christian beliefs were exactly alike. Forcing Egyptian religion into a Christian mold hides its uniqueness.

There are also some more concrete signs of careless research, and even outright plagiarism. Mojsov quotes James Joyce, who drew on the Book of the Dead when writing Finnegans Wake, as saying that "a reader who tried to find a gripping story in it would 'go and hang himself'". Apparently she has misread Joyce's Book of the Dark, whose author, not Joyce, wrote that about the Book of the Dead, while acknowledging that he lifted the phrase "go and hang himself" from Samuel Johnson. Mojsov copies another phrase, with no attribution or quotation marks, from Erik Hornung's The Secret Lore of Egypt.

Maybe I'm being too hard on this book, because I already know most of what it says about Osiris and his worship. Newcomers to the subject would get more out of it. There's no solid, comprehensive book on Osiris that I can point them to instead. But I can't recommend this one.

Not at all disappointed

On the contrary to not so popular but very exploited tabloid coverage of the whole "Michael Jackson Scandel", Lisa Campbell comes out with the facts of the case in and out of itself and things that people do need to realize about the whole situation as a whole. Michael's intense love for the children of the world because of his own inner personality of being a child-at-heart became a fault to everyone else through this extortion attempt.
Ms. Campbell presented the facts between the TWO trails that were occuring at the time, not just one, and shows Michaels undeniable innocence all the way. Her unwaning support of Michael is echoed throughout the world with the minds and voices of the fans that really care about Michael.
The story was intriguing and very sad as well. It's appalling to think that such a kind and shy person as Michael Jackson could be subjected to such harmful persecuting, and I have to admit that the story was compelling enough to make one not only feel for Michael, to sympathize, but to also feel his own pain and just begin to imagine what agony he could have felt at the time, and even to this very moment. It made me choke up, and I could not put down this book.
This is a wonderful biography on Michael's "Scandelous" moments, and it totally proves Michael Jackson, again and again, that he has always maintained his innocence, and will always. Magnificant!

A look at the other side

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book although the topic is difficult. I've read Lisa's other book also, equally as good (MJ: King of Pop). She makes no secrect of the fact that she is an MJ supporter but her writing is factual and she obviously digs deep to get to the heart of the story. Because this book stops with the Chandler mess, you get a lot more detail than books that try to cover Michael's entire life. I for one, was happy to hear "the other side" of the 1993 allegations nightmare. Volumes have been written that are defamatory, malicious and sensationalistic and truth be damned. At least Lisa tried to present an alternative appraisal of that horrible time in MJ's life.

It is quite curious to me why after the passing of MJ none is interested to read this great book of Campbell. Though the book cannot be bought, it is available in the internet. Maybe some fans did read but they chose not to share or share somewhere other than Amazon.

Different from the many books I have read, this is the only book that saw the 1993 case from the angle of a supporter of MJ. The book is foreword by Bob Jones, MJ's PR at that time. Campbell is, however, not totally biased towards her idol. She did point out some rumours in the book, like, Brook Shield was given $10000 each time accompanying MJ to shows, and MJ's grandfather received Public Assistance.

It is interesting to note that throughout the book the writer kept spelling out those names who supported MJ through the first trial. And it mentioned more than one time Diana Ross was very silent on the trial.

I tend to love very much those thing that is rare and scarce, just like this book. Fans should not miss this book.

An eye opener.

They say it's what goes on behind the scenes in the prominent families that are the real stories to be told and how true with the Pankhursts. A great read.

An up close and personal biography of this remarkable family written for the general reader. Too bad the author lowered himself to speculating about the sexual orientation of certain activists. Who cares???!!! Worth noting is: 1) there is no bibliography, and 2) the Vintage Books (UK) paperback edition features smallish type on off-white recycled paper making it somewhat hard to read. But this is a fascinating subject and a well-written biography of the entire family, worth the effort. For fact-checking and comparative purposes, see Paula Bartley's "Emmeline Pankhurst," and June Purvis' "Emmeline Pankhurst; A Biography."
