Kindergarten-Grade 2-Finding the right tree for playing is hard work, but this narrator has plenty of spirit, trying again and again. Enthusiasm abounds as he runs from tree to tree, only to find that each one is already inhabited. He enters the world of backyard animals from squirrels to spiders, and hears and sees them playing, too. Finally, in a tree that holds a world just for him, he falls asleep, utterly exhausted. Repetition is cleverly entwined into this rhythmic narrative, such as "On moss-covered rocks, crickets chirp, 'Chirree!'/as I look, look, look for a tree for me." Primitive-style painted images combine with a collage technique, resulting in a look that is similar to the artist's previous work. What is different here is the use of more white space, which emphasizes contrast, makes the words more visible, and adds to a sense of openness. A fine pairing of author and illustrator, resulting in an appealing story.

Rhythmaning

The words flow so melodically and with such varied rhythms, that reading this is like singing a song. Nancy Van Laan, author of the defiantly slangy "Possum Comes a Knockin,'" once again shows her keen sense of sound in this very fun picture book for infants and toddlers. It's a simple story that, in someone else's hands, could have seemed formulaic and predictable. Van Laan, however, turns this into a frolicking poem that begs for dramatic oral expression. You're the conductor here-speed up and slow down your voice, turn the volume up and down, register surprise, disappointment, and delight, as you read this out loud. Sheila White Samton's unique collage-style pictures will also captivate your audience.

The simple story tells of a (briefly seen) boy and his dog looking for a certain tree. Instead, they find trees inhabited by friendly looking animals including frogs, possums (!), grasshoppers, worms, and squirrels. SPOILER: Our heroes eventually find the cozy tree house they were searching for!Nicely produced by Borzoi Books for Knopf, "A Tree for Me" has 28 beautifully illustrated pages. Although a few of the words are difficult (e.g., squirrels, dangling), the repeating words in Van Laan's poem may make this an appropriate book for the beginning reader as well as the small fry hearing it from you.

A joyful book!

I'm a huge fan of Sheila White Sampon's books. Not only do my kids love them, but I adore reading them to my kids. There's a beautiful and simple quality to the words and pictures, and this makes for easy and fun reading and looking. But under her seemingly simple stories and pictures is a mastery that shows her deep understanding of kids and life.
When I ask my kids which book they want me to read, they often pick up one of Sheila White Sampon's. Her books are harmonious and life-affirming. It's my great pleasure to read them often to my kids. Bravo to Ms. Sampon!!

I am an art critic and curator. This book is a delightful poem with incantatory repetitions that kids love. The illustrations are enchanting -- witty, engaging, and wonderfully colored. Samton's images add another layer of meaning to van Laan's amusing rhymes. Both text and illustrations stand up to repeated reading and close looking.

About the Author

Celia B. Fisher, PhD, Director of the Fordham University Center for Ethics Education and the Marie Ward Doty University Chair and Professor of Psychology, served as Chair of the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) Ethics Code Task Force responsible for the 2002 revision of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct that, with the addition of language on human rights amended in 2010, is today’s current code. She currently serves as Chair of the Ethics Code Task Force for the American Public Health Association and Director of the NIDA funded Fordham University HIV and Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Institute.� She has served as Chair of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Human Subjects Research Board, the New York State Board for Licensure in Psychology, the National Task Force on Applied Developmental Science, and the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Committee for Ethical Conduct in Child Development Research and the SRCD Common Rule Task Force. Dr. Fisher was also a member of the APA Ethics Committee, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Safety and Monitoring Board, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Clinical Research Involving Children, the IOM Committee on Ethical Review and Oversight Issues in Research Involving Standard of Care Interventions, the National Academies’ Committee on Revisions to the Common Rule for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), for which she co-chaired the SACHRP Subcommittee on Research Involving Children, and she is currently a member of the NIH Societal and Ethical Issues in Research Study Section. She also served as the founding director of the Fordham University Doctoral Program in Applied Developmental Psychology and cofounding editor of the journal Applied Developmental Science. She is the recipient of the 2010 Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection Life Time Achievement Award and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Fisher has written commissioned papers on research ethics with mentally impaired and vulnerable populations for President Clinton’s National Bioethics Advisory Commission, for NIMH on points for consideration in the ethical conduct of suicide research and research involving children and adolescents, and for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) on HIV education, treatment, and referrals for research participants. She co-chaired the national conference on Research Ethics for Mental Health Science Involving Ethnic Minority Children and Youth (American Psychologist, December 2002) co-sponsored by the APA and NIMH, and the first National Conference on Graduate Education in Applied Developmental Science (Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 1993).

Dr. Fisher has coedited eight books and authored more than 150 scholarly chapters and empirical articles on cognitive and social development across the life span and on research and professional ethics with special emphasis on the rights of racial/ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minority youth, children and adults with impaired decision making, and socially marginalized populations. With support from the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), she has studied how to assess and enhance the abilities of adults with developmental disabilities to consent to research and is currently working on a project to develop research ethics training modules for American Indian and Native Alaskan community engaged researchers. With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), she has developed research ethics instructional materials for undergraduates, graduate students, senior scientists, and institutional review boards. She has developed assessment instruments to evaluate how teenagers and parents from different racial/ethnic backgrounds prepare for and react to racial discrimination, examined the validity of child abuse assessment techniques in institutional and forensic settings, and, with support from the NSF, NIDA, and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), has partnered with culturally diverse community members and frontline researchers conducting community-based research to understand their perspectives on the ethics of adolescent risk research and research involving adults involved in street drug use and related HIV risk. With support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Office of Research Integrity, she has developed and validated measures assessing mentoring behaviors and departmental climates nurturing the responsible conduct of research in psychology graduate programs. Her research on intervention programs to reduce college students’ drinking behaviors has been supported by the Department of Education and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). She is also co-principle investigator on a National Institute for Minority Health Disparities grant on ethical issues in HIV research involving LGBT youth.

Rough Country

This collection of western stories has a broad appeal even for the reader whomight not normally decide to read this type of story. Each story is well-crafted. Each writer has carefully recreated the old West in such as way that the reader is drawn not only into the story, but into the time period as well. I was very happy with my purchase, and look forward to other works by these authors.

I'd read books by Brett Cogburn, D.B. Jackson, Johnny Boggs, and Dusty Richards, so knew I'd enjoy this compilation of Western short stories; those men have enough writing awards between them to fill a VW. After reading the other stories that Cogburn put together here, I'm sure there are many other awards either in hand or coming to these fine writers. Buy it; you won't be disappointed. There's something here for everyone, young or old, male or female.

Nancy Akhavan is Assistant Professor in the department of Educational Research and Administration at California State University, Fresno. Previously, she was Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership for Middle Schools in Fresno Unified School District, a large urban district in California's Central Valley. She has worked as a district staff developer, principal, elementary school bilingual teacher, bilingual resource teacher, and professional development coordinator for over twenty years. Dr. Akhavan is passionate about providing a high quality education for all children through authentic, purposeful instruction. She has provided staff development training to teachers grades K-12 on topics as literacy, vocabulary development, writing, English Language Development, standards based instruction, coaching and leadership. She also has provided training to teacher leaders and administrators in systems and culture change, school reform, and classroom based professional development. In addition to her work in classrooms and schools, she has written a number of professional books, including the Heinemann titles Teaching Reading in a Title I School, K-3; Teaching Writing in a Title I School, K-3; Help! All My Students Don't Speak English: How to Set Up a Language Workshop in Your Linguistically Diverse Classroom; and How to Align Literacy Instruction, Assessment, and Standards and Achieve Results You Never Dreamed Possible. Engineering Statistics

Purchased this as the required text book to accommodate an engineering probability/statistics course. However, our teacher had pretty much written his own book that most of the other students solely relied on. I more so used this book, and found it very good at explaining every thing needed in the class. Also, it's a bit smaller than most textbooks, but still has lots of information.

Overall, it was one of the easier references for getting through statistics/probability tailored for engineering disciplines.

I paid 25% of new value for a used book that was essentially new. Great value. However, the book is not well written. Many times information is assumed and one has to spend a inordinate amount of time to discover something that could have be given with one extra sentence.
