Intense but brief and concentrated introduction to the fundaments of information security

In Applied Information Security: A Hands-on Approach, authors David Basin, Patrick Schaller and Michael Schl�pfer detail some of the labs exercises and texts that they used for courses they gave at ETH Z�rich (Eidgen�ssische Technische Hochschule Z�rich), an engineering and science -based university in Zurich, Switzerland.

In fewer than 200 pages, the book is an intense introduction to the fundamentals of information security. The authors wrote the book to be used as a primary reference for an undergraduate or post-graduate level course.

The book is written by college professors for a college level reader, and it is expected that the reader have a solid understanding of networks and programming. The book is made for the reader looking to take their core technical knowledge and apply it to information security.

The main focus of the book is on network security, O/S security and web applications. Large tomes could be written on the security aspects of each of these, so the book should not be seen as a definitive reference, rather an introductory text.

The reader is expected to complete the labs to get the full benefit of the text. These labs can be downloaded here.

This is not a For Dummies style of book with the verbosity that comes along with it. But for those looking for an intense but brief and concentrated introduction to some of the fundamentals of information security, to supplement other more comprehensive references, Applied Information Security: A Hands-on Approach, is a an excellent book.

An outstanding complement to theory lectures

My students and I are big fans of this book. I have been using it regularly, since its publication, in the course "Network Security" that I teach in the Master of Science Program "Engineering and Computer Science" at the University of Verona, Italy. The course is structured in a number of theory lectures, covering the main aspects of network security, accompanied by a lab in which I have adopted the "Applied Information Security: A Hands-on Approach" book.
The book does what it promises and complements in an interesting and unique way the theory lectures: it allows students to carry out exercises and experiments on the topics that have been discussed in the lectures and, thanks to the accompanying software, they can choose to do this in the university lab or at home (or both). The assignment project proposed at the end of the book challenges the students in a very proficient way and, indeed, the ratings of the course have risen considerably since I adopted the book.

About the Author
Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, LJ Ross graduated from King's College London with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Law and continued her studies in Paris and Florence. After working in the City as a regulatory lawyer for a number of years, she realised it was high time for a change. The catalyst was the birth of her son, which forced her to take a break from the legal world and find time for some of the detective stories which had been percolating for a while and finally demanded to be written. She lives with her husband and young son in the south of England, but will always be a northern girl at heart. Yet another sequel

This could be a good series IF each book finished the story. Instead, Sycamore Gap was the sequel to Holy Island and the reader is still guessing who some of the bad guys are? A sequel to this book is in the works.

The plot is somewhat far fetched, about a large band of pagans hiding in plain sight in the local area. Here it is 6 months after the murders on Holy Island and Ryan doesn't seem to have solved any other cases. All the members of the Circle should have been arrested in Holy Island, and Ryan should have had another case to solve in Sycamore Gap.

One thing which made no sense at all was that Ryan's girlfriend was allowed to be in the incident room when the detectives and CSI were working on the case. No way would any civilian be allowed that freedom, and later be left alone with all the evidence while the police went chasing after a suspect. With so many pagans living close by it might be possible for Anna to be one of the members of the Circle, and she would be privy to all the evidence the police were collecting about them. It just didn't make sense.

I will not be buying the next book. The search for the Pagan leader has already gone on way too long.

Soon thereafter, another young woman’s body is found in the same spot. The crimes seem to be related, but can they possibly be work of the same man?

It is the Summer Solstice. The Circle that was responsible for the deaths on Holy Island, Ryan’s previous case, has been disbanded, according to police officials. What Ryan and his team are seeing now has them wondering. My brain screamed, “Not again!” I enjoyed Holy Island a great deal, but I felt that a second book filled with secret members and sacrificial victims would be over the top. Much to my relief, most of the plot focused on other characters with motives even more malevolent, if that is possible. Ms. Ross has once again conjured up some wicked people; some are bad to the bone, while several others are quite skilled at masking their true selves, and they appear to function as normal human beings. One, in particular, had me completely fooled.

The good guys are more balanced in their personalities. They have genuine feelings, they have relationships, and they work hard, not for power and prestige, but because they want to make the world better and safer. As in Holy Island, Ryan and Anna continue their romance; Phillips, too, has been bitten by the love bug, and I couldn’t help rooting for him. There are some smatterings of humor along the way also.

It was easy to become immersed in this second book. I think I liked it even better than the first. Is everything resolved in the end? Regrettably, no. Questions are left unanswered and some crimes go unpunished. This leaves the door open for a third novel. I am not sure that I can handle more than three books in this vein, since for me, it really pushes the bounds of believability. Three and out for the Circle would be my preference. However, I do enjoy Ryan and Anna, Phillips, and Denise MacKenzie. I would like to see them investigating other sorts of crimes not related to the occult. Ms. Ross writes a suspense-filled plot and likable, as well as loath-able, characters, so I do look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Stories should have a begining, a middle and an ending. This one had a tolerable begining, an interesting middle and then she just stopped. It may have been a tawdry attempt to interest readers in her next book. But for me I felt as though the contract between author and reader had been seriously broken and I would not invest time and effort in any of her other books.

Franchising as a way of developing and growing a business is a popular activity, yet even though it can appear to be a shortcut for many to start and operate a business, it still remains hard work and can come with its own particular risks and challenges. This book turns things around and looks at matters from the viewpoint of a business who wants to expand by possibly franchising out its existing business. It can, in fact, also provide useful information to both groups, franchisee and franchisor.

The author takes the reader on a comprehensive tour of the entire process, offering advice based on practical experience, looking at both the upside and the downside, whilst hopefully navigating the reader away from problems and mistakes that can derail or adversely impact the process. Despite this being a pro-franchising book, it is good that the author has not shied away from the problems that can exist too, as you must manage your expectations and plan for the less pleasant things that could happen.

The book itself is fairly clear and easy to follow. Some of the advice given will be U.S.-centric, yet the broad principles and advice will be the same for all. It does not pretend to be the one and only book you will need, so it will capably provide broad coverage of the key points you need to focus on, allowing you to pull in more specific advice or guidance as required.

Even if you do not have specific plans or interest to franchise your operations, it is quite possible that the book can give additional data points or insights that could impact on a more traditional business. The book does not cost the earth and it appears to give good value-for-money for what you get and what you potentially may achieve, should you take further steps along the franchising pathway.

My name is Nick Carter and I founded a commercial cleaning company. Mark Siebert's book, "Franchise Your Business", is by far the best and most authoritative book on franchising in general and specifically how to franchise your business. It provides the reader a thorough understanding of what franchising is and it's pros and cons, helps the reader objectively determine if their business idea is even franchisable in the first place and if they actually have what it takes to be successful, and provides strategies to be successful in the long-term.

Creating a franchise system is certainly not for everybody or the faint of heart. However, if you are considering franchising a business, then this is an absolute must read before you get too far into the process.

About the Author
Peter Lawrence is a stage manager with over 40 years of experience in the commercial theatre. Working as production stage manager, he originated over 25 Broadway productions, among them Spamalot, Hurlyburly, Sunset Boulevard, Shrek The Musical, and five new plays by Neil Simon. Production stage manager assignments have seen him working in dinner theatre, stock, regional theatres, Broadway, off-Broadway, and national tours. Lawrence has and continues to work with many of the great directors of our time including Mike Nichols, Gene Saks, James Lapine, Sam Mendes, Trevor Nunn, Joe Layton, John Doyle, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Michael Kidd, Jonathan Kent, and many more. Scenic designers Tony Walton, Santo Loquasto, John Napier, Tim Hatley, David Korins, Rob Howell, and Derek McLane, and lighting designers Tharon Musser, Ken Billington, Jennifer Tipton, Jules Fisher, Peggy Eisenhauer, Don Holder, Hugh Vanstone, and Andrew Bridge have all been part of the design teams of Lawrence s shows. He has also worked with costume designers Theoni V. About the Author
GEORGE EVANS, an artist from Harwood, Pennsylvania, debuted in the illustration field, and attended the Scranton Art School afterwards. After spending three years in the US airforces, he began his career in comics at Fiction House until 1950. There, he worked on among others 'Lost World', 'Senorita Rio', 'Air Heroes' and 'Tigerman'. He was also present at Fawcett, where he worked on 'Captain Marvel', 'Captain Video', 'Bob Colt' and a comic adaptation of the film 'When Worlds Collide'. During this period, he also took courses at the Art Students League in New York. When Fawcett folded, he was brought over to EC Comics by Al Williamson, where he was hired immediately in 1953. Thanks to his technical knowledge of airplanes and machinery, Evans quickly became Kurtzman's favorite on 'Two Fisted Tales' and 'Frontline Combat', yet Evans preferred the freedom of working with Feldstein on the EC horror and SF titles 'The Haunt of Fear' and 'Weird Science'. He also provided striking covers and stories for 'Crime SuspenStories' and 'Shock SupenStories'. In 1955, he drew covers and stories for the "New Direction" aviation title 'Aces High'. When EC collapsed in 1956, he was brought over to Gilberton's 'Classics Illustrated' line. He adapted among others 'Romeo and Juliet', 'The Little Savage', 'Lord Jim', 'The Hunchback of the Notre Dame', and 'The Three Musketeers' to comics. He also did 'Space Conquerors' for Boy's Life magazine. He began collaborations with DC Comics ('Blackhawk') and Gold Key ('Twilight Zone', 'Hercules Unchained') in the early 1960s. He also became George Wunder's assistant on the daily 'Terry and the Pirates', a capacity he held from 1960 to 1973. In 1964 and 1965, he was back in horror comics, with contributions to Warren's Eerie and Creepy. From 1968, he produced various stories about the supernatural for DC Comics. In 1980, he succeeded Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson on 'Secret Agent Corrigan', a series he continued until 1996. During the 1980s and 1990s, he also drew for publishers like Pacific ('Vanguard Illustrated'), Eclipse ('Airboy'), Marvel ('The Nam') and Dark Horse ('Classic Star Wars'), while also illustrating advertising campaigns. He retired in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, where his final work was doing the 'Flash Gordon' Sunday page on 21 January 2001.

A Pleasant Surprise

The only reason I picked up the book was because it was one of "those" books in the school library. You wanted to read it for the points, but everybody who picked it up gaze up and put it back down. *I* even tried to read it once and gave up. But I'm always up for a challenge. The next year I checked it out and informed everybody I knew that I was going to be one of the first people in our school to read the book. Then I decided to begin reading.
The first couple pages are basically one long paragraph that doesn't make sense unless you're re-reading it and already know the characters and what's going on. I was tempted to put it down, but I wasn't going to back down. By about page 30, it was easy to read, and I began to get into it.
What I discovered was that this is possibly one of the best pieces of fiction ever written. I couldn't put it down, and spent a whole Saturday reading it. I never expected it to be what it was from what I'd read on the back. But then, the plot is so complex, and there are so many sub-plots that you wonder how anyone can do it justice.
I read once that many people associate the word "classic" with the word "boring". As I've discovered, this is entirely not true. When I thought about it, the reason books become classics aren't because they're old and boring, but because people love them, because they are read by millions. The reason that they lasted for so long is because people kept them alive. I'm sure that in a century from now, only a select few books that we enjoy will still be in print, and those particular books will be the best of our time, just as The Three Musketeers was the best of its time.
I'm sorry if this review didn't suffice, I'm just hoping that maybe somebody will read it and give it a try. So far I haven't talked anyone I know into reading it, but they're not bookworms like me. People are intimidated by its size, but from my experience, the best books are the largest. When an author really has a story to tell, one that you will enjoy, one that has a complex, satisfying plot, then it's going to be long.
Okay, I'm done lecturing anyone who got this far. :)

Huzzah!

An "endless adventure" breathlessly moving from one scene to the next: sword-fighting, court espionage, sex scandals, poisonings, assassinations, undying love and so on.

'Les Trois Mousquetaires', first published in 1844, was soon translated into three English versions by 1846. One of these, by William Barrow, is still in print and fairly faithful to the original, available in the Oxford World's Classics 1999 edition. However all of the explicit and many of the implicit references to sexuality had been removed to conform to 19th century English standards of morality, thus making the scenes between d'Aragnan and Milady, for example, confusing and strange. The most recent and new standard English translation is by award-winning translator Richard Pevear (2006). Pevear says in his translation notes that most of the modern translations available today are "textbook examples of bad translation practices" which "give their readers an extremely distorted notion of Dumas's writing." Thankfully we have high quality translations like this one now available.

Not all "Three Musketeers" are alike!

If one were to search for "The Three Musketeers" in Amazon's Kindle store, you might find several listings, some free, some for $0.99. AVOID THEM! Most are repackaged versions of the same stilted translation by William Barrow which reads like a 2nd year French student's term paper. It captures nearly all of Dumas' words and none of his nuance. Also, be warned that some of these packages are abridged versions and do not advertise themselves as such.

I heartily recommend the Lowell Bair 1984 translation printed by Bantam Books and available for Kindle here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Three-Musketeers-ebook/dp/B000FC29H0/ref=tmm_kin_title_7?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1301931164&sr=1-1-catcorr. This most excellent translation is fresh, modern and faithful to both the spirit, grace, and the character of Dumas' authorized editions (there were at least three). Bair's translation is both literate and elegant. Unlike the Mobi/Project Gutenberg/Barrow version(s?), it never forces you to rearrange 19th century French grammar and syntax into modern 20th/21st century English. Bair does this for you without distilling out any of the flavor and panache that Dumas (et alia) infused into the original serials.

Similar to Bair's artistry is that of LeClerq (http://www.amazon.com/The-Three-Musketeers-ebook/dp/B000FC1KNY/ref=tmm_kin_title_popover?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1301931164&sr=1-1-catcorr) and Pevear (http://www.amazon.com/Three-Musketeers-Penguin-Classics-ebook/dp/B000Q9J0QA/ref=tmm_kin_title_8?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1301931164&sr=1-1-catcorr). Why the Pevear Penguin edition costs three times what Bair's and LeClerq's do is beyond me since I only sampled the Kindle version. However, I have read Bair's in hardcopy and recommend it for your Kindle reading pleasure. If you really are hard pressed for cash, then by all means: go for the free/cheap versions. Just remember, cheap does not bode well for quality.
