Full disclosure - I was the tech reviewer for this book. I agreed to review because there are very few single sources of information for the topic that span the range of methods to upgrade or migrate between database types, vendors, versions and use different techniques based on the criteria and business reasons for upgrading. In class, I was often asked how to handle a variety of upgrade or migration scenarios, and this is truly the first book I have seen that identifies many of the possibilities and techniques. The book provides a framework to follow, shows different scenarios in which to use the techniques, and helps understand the various costs and benefits associated with each technique. If nothing else, it is worth reading to give some ideas how to start to approach your upgrade or migration.

Alyssa Morris: Now that you’ve had a bit of time to absorb the success of Bared to You, does it feel real? Or are you still surprised?

Sylvia Day: I'm still surprised! I’m glad I’m a veteran and that I’ve been publishing for close to 10 years, so I had some experience under my belt as far as dealing with it. But on the other hand, there’s no way to anticipate writing something that becomes a global phenomenon, you know. I don’t know about other writers--I didn’t even dream about anything like that. I always figured that it just happened to the Stephenie Meyers and J.K. Rowlings of the world. So, yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever get over being surprised that I had a series that struck such a chord.

AM: It just hit such a moment in our culture, where all of a sudden this is what everyone wants to be reading. It’s an interesting confluence.

SD: Right. We always talk about that, about right book, right time. Random House released Fifty Shades on the same day I self-published Bared to You, so talk about the right timing. Just… wow!

AM: Do you have a favorite moment in the Crossfire series so far?

SD: You know, I really loved the weekend that Gideon and Eva spent in the Outer Banks. These poor guys. When they’re alone, they’re fine. Life is perfect when they’re alone. Unfortunately, they don’t get a lot of time alone. [Laughs] So I just love that. I love seeing them together away from all of the distractions and intrusions and everything else that’s going wrong in their lives.

I can’t talk too much about Entwined with You because it’s not out yet. And that’s so hard, because I so want to talk tabout it! But there’s more alone time with Gideon and Eva as we move forward in the series and they grow stronger, so I’m really enjoying that as a writer.

First book I ever felt bad about reading, major disappointment!

So disappointed that this trilogy is no longer a trilogy, but a series. I feel completely deceived and not happy that there was no advance warning. When you pay 9.99 for a book and read it with the expectation that you'll read the conclusion, and hopefully a happy ending, there is such a sense of frustration to find out it continues...unnecessarily! I liked Eva and Gideon's story as the MAIN characters. However this book does not focus on them, instead the secondary characters are what the the author is trying to develop in the 3rd book to prolong the series, and make more money. The storyline with Brett Kline seems weak and only plays out in a couple of spots in the 2nd and 3rd book, making it seem like his character and storyline is a filler. Same goes for Megumi, the receptionist where Eva works. The worst is the new intern Will. His character is a complete joke as they talk about what he's eating and craving...WHO CARES? There were a lot of times I read the book and felt like Eva just observed random things happening throughout her day that had no relevance to the storyline, other than to take up space on paper.

While I don't want to knock the author since it is obvious she is capable of writing good material, it's hard not to. Whether she decided to prolong the story for profits, or the publishing house asked her to do it, the bottom line is she went along with it. Out of respect for her work and her loyal readers it should have never been considered. Quality over quantity! The one POSITIVE for me is that after I read this I was so frustrated I had to read something else to take my mind off my disappointment. What I found was my justification for my review on this book and my thoughts about the author. I came across a book called Beauty from Pain by Georgia Cates. This book was followed by a sequel called Beauty from Surrender. Both books were wonderful and the icing on the cake came at the end of the second book. The author added notes that she had received so many requests to add a third book and continue Laurelyn and Jack's story (the main characters). However, she felt good about where their story had ended and decided to end it at the second book. She included that she may write a novella to please all the readers that requested a third book, but also wanted to please the people that loved where the story ended. This is where Sylvia Day could take some notes. Integrity over ambition or profits!

Never Thought I'd Rate This Series So Low

I'm sure I have been more disappointed before but I can't remember when. I loved "Bared." I was okay with "Reflected" but I am downright insulted with "Entwined." This was the worst of the series and that's really saying something when you consider how mediocre "Reflected" was.

This, I don't even want to call it a book; letters on paper lacked a plot, progression, romance, or even drama. It read like a porn script with little, meaningless, boring conversation thrown in the middle of who cares sex scenes. There wasn't anything romantic about Gideon and Eva's relationship in this book. Eva appears to have reverted back to a teenage nympho and Gideon has become nothing more than a spoiled little rich kid wanting what he wants when he wants it.

Every character in this book lack communication skills and used raunchy, uninspired sex to compensate. By the 50% mark I couldn't have cared less if Eva and Gideon got together or not because I had grown to not like either of them. This was so much filler and trying to create problems for the series to continue and it all came off very contrived. Not to mention, this was supposed to be Gideon's story.. the man who has been having violent nightmares for the past two books and then the big reveal of the who and what happened is so meh inducing even the characters didn't spend more than a couple of sentences talking about it.

Where was the drama, the excitement, the romance, the complexity that made these characters so great in "Bared?" I can't believe a book that was delayed six months ended up reading so rushed and phoned in. I cannot in all honesty recommend this book and to be perfectly honest I also returned it like many other reviewers. There's no way I'm giving up my hard earned $10 bucks for a low budget porn script. I'm done with this series.

Sylvia Day... either you've screwed yourself or your publisher has screwed you...

Finally I get my say on this book... I've finished reading and I have to agree with alot of other disappointed folks that this book really leaves a lot to be desired for the $10 bucks I paid for it. Geez... it might not have been so bad if I didn't feel so price gouged for what I got. Okay... I LOVE the way Sylvia Day writes... that's why I fell in love with books 1&2. And this one had excellent moments of top notch writing. But the content of the writing is what really was lacking in this story and that's because "someone" has decided to stretch this story into FIVE books instead of what a trilogy really means. (okay enough of that since everyone has commented on it but it did make me mad). Here's what I HATED about this book:

1. Nothing is resolved or revealed about Gideon and his past. I mean come on Sylvia...give us something about why he has nightmares and is the way he is. This is book three of the story for crying out loud and still nothing to explain his weird behaviors.
2. Gideon is really "dark" in this novel. The way he treats Eva is darker, his acts of sex with Eva are darker(really STRONG dominant/submissive behavior in this book), his dealings with secondary characters are darker... it was kind of creepy and I didn't care for this very much... and Eva just lays back and takes it. He wasn't the Gideon that I thought I came to know and love in Bks 1&2.
3. Not a lot of substance in the story plot and just extra added "stuff" that was put in for filler. The whole Brett relationship with Eva... too much. Megumi's whole back story... unnecessary.

I'm not sure if I'll continue reading this story... I WILL NOT if the price stays the same because book 4 might be just the same as book 3. Also if it takes 8 months to release.... Well then forget it. There are way better authors writing GREAT novels for A LOT LESS MONEY. I'm giving this book TWO STARS because I'm applauding her excellent writing style... however, I'm so disappointed in you Sylvia Day for whatever choices you made concerning this TRILOGY!!!!!

A life line needed for every pregnancy!!!

This devotional really blessed me, I am currently 19 weeks and this pregnancy was truly a miracle from God. My husband and I have struggled for many years trying to start a family. Once we found out we were pregnant we couldn't tell anyone for the first twelve weeks. It was very hard for me because I am so close to my family. My faith and trust in God has grown so much by doing this devotional daily. It has given me great peace and a sence of closeness to God like never before. If this is your first child or your fifth one this devotional is a special keepsake to have. Writing down your thoughts and prayers for your unborn is an amazing gift as a mother. Our prayers are so important. My plan is to give this book to our child one day. I am due March 2013, this book has really blessed me. I am so thankful for it. Worth every penny. Its encouraging to know there is a christian community of women who have walked in my shoes before. God is in control and all the Glory goes to him...

Great Devotional!

I was looking for a daily devotional that I could use during my pregnancy that allowed me to pray for my unborn baby, as well as leading me through all the things I am experiencing as an expectant mother. I bought 6 devotional books, and I found this one to be the best in terms of prayer and devotions. I am currently using this daily as I found the prayers comforting and builds faith during this time of waiting.

Although the presentation of the book is not the best of the ones I bought, what I love about this book is that it has a daily devotion & prayers for each day of your pregnancy, and it guides you to devote through issues that new mothers may experience like anxiety, pregnancy symptoms, changes in perspective, parenting, etc. And also celebrates with you - your expectations for your new baby, praying for your baby, uplifting experiences during your pregnancy, names for baby, etc

For me, this daily devotional really journeys with me during my pregnancy.

Pros:
+ Has great spiritual substance in its content (christian)
+ Has daily devotionals and prayers that are well written for each day of your pregnancy
+ Identifies with what a pregnant mother may be going through, thinking of or feeling - and speaks faith into you
+ I like journalling, and I found the journalling sections gave me some great questions to reflect, pray and thank God about.

Cons:
+ The presentation is not 'pretty' like some other devotionals
+ Larger size than most devotionals
+ If you are looking for devotionals with sweet/feel-good stories, then this is not the right devotional for you.

Absolutely love this!

I used this book every day of my pregnancy and when my baby was born, I didn't know what to do because there was nothing like this to help me go through new motherhood! I really felt that with this book I "accumulated" prayers for my baby, enough to sustain me even when I couldn't pray and meditate as much while taking care of a newborn. Every day I was so surprised that the verse of the day fit my current condition/issues so perfectly!

The only issue with this book is that there are so many typos and sometimes the verse is not correct (the Book and chapter will not match the Bible). Nevertheless I have been recommending/gifting this book for any Christian friend who got pregnant.

With this volume, author and sociologist Sennett (The Culture of the New Capitalism) launches a three-book examination of "material culture," asking "what the process of making concrete things reveals to us about ourselves." Taking in everything from Pandora and Hephaestus to Linux programmers, Sennett posits that the spirit of craftsmanship-an "enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake"-is tragically lacking in many areas of the industrialized world. Craftsmanship, by combining skill, commitment and judgment, establishes a close relationship between head and hand, man and machine, that Sennett asserts is vital to physical, mental and societal well-being; the symptoms of craftsmanship-deficiency can be found in worker demoralization, inefficiency and waning loyalty from both employees and employers, as well as other (largely institutional) effects. Sennett looks at the evolution of craftsmanship and the historical forces which have stultified it, how it's learned in the areas it still thrives (among scientists, artists, cooks, computer programmers and others), and issues of quality and ability (skill, not talent, makes a craftsman). Sennett's learned but inclusive prose proves entirely readable, and the breadth of his curiosity-delving into the minds behind the Manhattan project, touring Soviet suburbs, examining the methods of Julia Childs-take him in a number of fascinating directions.

Sennett considers an array of artisans across different periods, from ancient Chinese chefs to contemporary mobile-phone designers, in this powerful meditation on the "skill of making things well." The template of craftsmanship, he finds, combines a "material consciousness" with a willingness to put in years of practice (a common estimate of the time required to master a craft is ten thousand hours) and a strategic acceptance of ambiguity, rather than an obsessive perfectionism. Sennett’s aim is to make us rethink the notion that society benefits most from a workforce trained to respond to the metamorphoses of a global economy. Ultimately, he writes, the difficulties and possibilities of craft can teach "techniques of experience" that help us relate to others, and lead to an "ethically satisfying" pride in one’s work.

A complex but very rewarding read about craftsmanship, pride ...

A complex but very rewarding read about craftsmanship, pride in one's work and the differences between individual work and mechanical production, and the intellectual investment in the former versus the more mechanistic approach in the latter.
Sennet uses many examples from the world of music to illustrate his thesis and he finishes with an explanation of the philosophical underpinnings of his ideas, pragmatism in this case.
This book has an extensive index and bibliography and his examples are well-chosen and illustrative and evidence of his wide understanding of the matter. Not a book to read on the beach or a plane or even at home in a week or so. It requires time and patience and is rewarding even when dipping into individual sections but the real benefit comes with the final section brings together the threads and leaves the (this) reader with much more understanding of this field of human endeavour than one had before.

An Important Re-framing of an Old Idea

Richard Sennett has been one of my most-preferred interpreters of physical and social culture since Flesh and Stone. He tackles issues that got trampled by misapplications of lit-crit and semiotic theory over the last few decades, and manages to get them back into the discussion. He has a rather dogged style: history, explication, and journalistic fairness are treated like responsibilities in language that is mostly quite dry, even bland. But what he lacks in vivacity, he more than covers with solid, methodical argumentation and a heartening tendency to broaden concepts and include the truly modern. In this volume, for example, Sennett adds Linux programming to the list of what we normally think of as craft, and I think he makes his case. Craft is a wicked thicket for us Moderns: we have not kept pace with its devaluation in an age of competitive production and disposable workers, and the quality of our handwork has suffered, but Sennett also convinces me that our comprehension of the world and the place of humans in it has suffered, because good craft is the meeting of mind and hand. What devalues handwork impoverishes the human mind. We lose our capacity for imagination.

I read this book very closely, pencil in hand, convinced that Sennett has contributed greatly to our understanding of what it means to be human in a machine age. I believe that his work has eclipsed Hannah Arendt's by now. Excellent.

About the Author
Caroline Schacht, M.A. in sociology and M.A. in family relations, is instructor of sociology at East Carolina University and teaches courtship and marriage, introduction to sociology, and the sociology of food. Her clinical work includes marriage and family relationships. She is also a divorce mediator and the coauthor of several books, including UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL PROBLEMS (Wadsworth 2010). She is married to David Knox.

David Knox (Chantilly, VA) is the Chief Engineer for Oracle's Information Assurance Center Oracle Corporation's Security Center of Excellence. Mr. Knox joined Oracle Corporation in June 1995. While at Oracle, Mr. Knox has worked on many security programs for the US Department of Defense, various Intelligence Agencies, Healthcare and Financial Services industries. His knowledge in computer security derives not only from working knowledge and experience with Oracle's security products and database security, but also his academic studies in the areas of multilevel security, cryptography, LDAP, and PKI. David earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.

Unconditionally, the BEST Hebrew book for self-teaching

I can't rate this book highly enough. I had looked at several different Hebrew books to try to teach myself Biblical Hebrew. Each book started off with teaching you the names of the letters and so on. This book doesn't bog you down with technicalities to start with. It launches you right into learning to read Hebrew.
For example, in the first chapter you are introduced to three letters. You are taught the sounds and some vowels. It is very simple, yet you learn quickly and find that you are actually reading real Hebrew words by the end of the first chapter! That is so encouraging when you're just starting out.
I have seen Hebrew language books that don't even teach you how to write the Hebrew by hand, which is much different than the formal typed Hebrew. This is necessary, and this book also includes directions on how to write the letters. Exercises are varied and comprehensive and include writing, reading, creating words, adding vowels, etc. There's even some humor in a few of the exercises.
The back cover of the book folds out to include charts that will help, too.
From this 92-page book, I taught myself to read Hebrew. I recommend it above all the others you may find here. It's also one of the least expensive. Additionally, you can also purchase tapes from EKS Publishing. They have many more Hebrew books for when you have mastered this one. This is the one to get.

It is a mitzvah!

I am teaching myself Hebrew and was looking for a few good books to help with this goal. Well, the reviews for this book were positive so, I ordered it.

Boy, I am so glad that I did too! First of all the book is very compact so, it is easy to take with you. It can fit into a handbag or briefcase with ease. There is a handy chart in the back for letter recognition. It even shows it with block print. This is the style that is considered handwritten. Nobody can write the letters that are in books. This was the only style that I saw and I tried to copy the book texts. It makes all the letters with curls, and wavy lines extremely difficult to write. This book changes that around!

In lesson 1, I was introduced to 3 letters. That is it, three! But what they did with those three letters are amazing. They introduced a vowel and it had the same sound. So, you are only learning one vowel every couple of lessons. It allows you to get comfortable with a couple of letters when combined with a vowel. I was reading and performing the exercises all in the first lesson! Unbelievable!

I like the exercises because they are self checking. Meaning, the words when pronounced correctly sound like real English words. This is encouraging to hear yourself reading. They do this purely for the exercises the words mean very different things in Hebrew. However, if you really doubt yourself, the answers are in the back. Of course, they are in Hebrew so, if you had problems with the exercises, this will not make it any easier for you. You will learn better, if you do not have the security net of the answers in the back of the book.

In the following lessons, they keep building upon the skills that you have learned in previous lessons. It is not isolating the lessons like most texts tend to do and they even review the lessons with you. They only introduce a few letters at a time which makes it really a lot more fun.

I was finally able to see what to do with Alef. It turns out that it really is a silent letter unless there is a vowel under it. It is what the books have been showing all this time. Who knew?

I wanted to teach my son Hebrew using this book but it would need modifications made to it. This is for adults who are self-disciplined enough to put their efforts into it. I think it is a great way to introduce vowels and this I will be doing with my son. However, this book is not to substitute for teaching or learning letter recognition. This does make a nice review for it. They do compare similar letters and how to tell them apart. This is extremely helpful for little ones who are having a hard time with letter recognition.

I know that there is a cassette companion for this book. However, I have just the book and I think that it is enough for me. Enjoy! You will not be sorry!

Christian OT Students Please Take Note

Easily the best text out there for novice students of general Hebrew. The Christian seminarian and prospective Tanakh ("Old" Testament) scholar who purchases this book as preparation for more advanced study will benefit tremendously. However, do keep in mind that your seminary or university texts will probably NOT use the modern Sephardic pronunciation that this book employs. Sephardic has a considerably simplified phonetic scheme,useful for learners of spoken and ceremonial Hebrew, in which a number of the vowels and consonants have identical sounds.

The Masoretic Text generally studied in Christian seminaries was attempting to transcribe a now archaic pronunciation in which each letter and pointing has its own sound, including subtle variations when the dagesh is absent. This by no means compromises the usefulness of this introductory book, but the novice Hebrew scholar should be aware that things get more precise on the academic level. Folks unfamiliar with Semitic languages will find Masoretic Hebrew sounds more challenging. Still, this book serves well as a gateway to an endlessly fascinating language.
