Fifty years of fun.

It's nice to see a book of coffee-table proportions just devoted to cartoons, well why not? Previous Playboy books have covered the history of the magazine, the delightful Playmates and now the cartoons. The 450 plus illustrations are the work of 107 cartoonists and if you are a regular reader of the magazine you'll see your favorites. Gahan Wilson has the most (thirty-two) followed by regulars like Eldon Dedini, John Demsey, Alden Erikson, Kiraz, Roy Raymonde, Doug Sneyd (he of the flamboyant signature, which I was never able to decipher until now) Erich Sokol and between these, dozens of great artists who have maybe one or two works each. The humor might not be the wonderful ironic style of the New Yorker but it is amazing how many fresh takes can be created with the bachelor lifestyle.

This is a handsomely produced book, printed on thick glossy paper which, nicely, allows you to really appreciate just how good some of these artists are. My favorite, Jack Davis, unfortunately only has four shown, Richard Taylor has a super picture on page ten, an art gallery where he has created several Picasso type paintings, Doug Sneyd, Phil Interlandi and Dedini are all brilliant draughtsmen and Shel Silverstein can create so much with so little line and color.

However I was a bit disappointed with this book, as another reviewer has commented, there is no indication of when the cartoons appeared and I wish the publishers had gone the extra mile and perhaps devoted some space throughout the pages for a photo and biography of the regulars, some of these guys have been with Playboy for years. Someone though, at least, did have the foresight to compile an Artists index and a useful Order of appearance list, both of which are in the back pages.

Clearly a wonderful book for the bedside table if your date didn't turn up, try laughing yourself to sleep.

nice book, but...

First of all this book is printed on excellent paper & is well done except for one thing. there is no way to tell what year the cartoons are from. They should have had chapters. 1950`s 1960`s ect so you know what era they are from

This Is A Cool Book

Fifty years worth of cartoons from Playboy. Doesn't that just set the mind reeling? Some of the biggest names in the business have their work showcased here in this history-making compendium. These cartoons are sometimes funny, often sardonic, frequently risqu�, and one and all they once graced the pages of the world's favorite source of "illustrated" reading material. Perhaps the best way to regard this hefty collection (did you catch the pun?) is as a window to the changing mores of American society regarding not only women and sex, but what is and is not acceptable subject matter for a cartoon itself. When taken as a whole I find this material reflective of how much times have changed, and Playboy magazine with it. Very little to offend anyone here, just good clean fun and some real laughs too.

Great author and 'been-there-done-that!'

The title had put many folks ill at ease but it reflects the diplomatic point at the time written. Really nice book for the region and accurate because I've been there and done that, too! Wish I could have met her and Dr. and Mrs. Bosch. Their books are classic in their approach and speaks volumes of their character.

About the Author

Danica G. Hays, PhD, LPC, NCC, is an associate professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award, Outstanding Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, and Glen E. Hubele National Graduate Student Award from the American Counseling Association as well as the Patricia B. Elmore Excellence in Measurement and Evaluation Award and President’s Special Merit Award from the Association of Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE).

Dr. Hays served as Founding Editor of Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation, a national peer-refereed journal of the AACE, and is Editor of Counselor Education and Supervision, a national peer-refereed journal of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She served as President of the AACE in 2011-12. Her research interests include qualitative methodology, assessment and diagnosis, trauma and gender issues, and multicultural and social justice concerns in counselor preparation and community mental health. She has published over 75 articles and book chapters in these areas and coauthored or coedited these other books to date: Qualitative Inquiry in Clinical and Educational Settings (Guilford Publications), Mastering the National Counselor Exam and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (Pearson), and the ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling (American Counseling Association). Professor Hays is also co-editor of the upcoming text, A Counselor’s Guide to Career Assessment Instruments (6th edition, National Career Development Association). She has been a faculty member at Old Dominion University since 2006 and her primary teaching responsibilities are doctoral-level research methods courses, assessment, and clinical supervision.�

Bradley T. Erford, PhD, is a professor in the school counseling program in the Education Specialties Department at Loyola University Maryland. He was President of the American Counseling Association during 2012-2013. He is an American Counseling Association (ACA) Fellow, and the recipient of several ACA awards, including the Research Award, Extended Research Award, Hitchcock Distinguished Professional Service Award, Professional Development Award, and the Carl Perkins Government Relations Award. He has received the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE) Exemplary Practices Award; Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Robert O. Stripling Award for Excellence in Standards; and the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development (MACD) Maryland Counselor of the Year, Professional Development, Counselor Visibility, and Counselor Advocacy Awards.

Professor Erford’s research specialization falls primarily in development and technical analysis of psychoeducational tests and has resulted in the publication of numerous books, journal articles, book chapters, and psychoeducational tests. He is a past chair of the ACA, Southern Region; past president of the AACE, the MACD, the Maryland Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (MACES), the Maryland Association for Mental Health Counselors (MAMHC), and the Maryland Association for Measurement and Evaluation (MAME). Dr. Erford is the past chair of the ACA Task Force on High Stakes Testing, Task Force on Standards for Test Users, Public Awareness and Support Committee, Bylaws Committee, and Interprofessional Committee. A Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, Licensed Psychologist, and Licensed School Psychologist, he teaches courses primarily in the areas of assessment, human development, research and evaluation, school counseling, and stress management.

Where is Text-to-Audio Feature?

Let me clearly state: my single star rating has NOTHING to do with the content of this textbook.

However, I would give it NO STARS rating due to having made this ebook purchase and it failing to live up to the convenience which I would naturally expect from an ebook. Being able to easily use a text to audio format is an absolute must for digital content, in my opinion. I personally make these digital purchases to have listening material while I am doing other things like washing dishes, driving, etc.
I downloaded this first on my iPod and was unable to use the text to audio feature. I then downloaded this on my Macbook and was able to go through a process of copying the text of a single page at a time and using a key shortcut (option, esc) to have the highlighted text read. However, I know realize that the program considers this to be a copy/print feature and has warned that there is a limit to its use. I am in the second chapter! Also, copying a page at a time is rather inconvenient and not conducive to easily following the story or text.
This is more than an inconvenience. It is a waste of digital programming and I would have reconsidered the format purchase if I was aware of this issue.
Kindle - please ramp up your technology features so that purchases on any device may enjoy the use of text to audio.

Great book, very thorough

The author took great care when she wrote this book. It is very in depth in the study of each individual culture she touches on and the need for counselors to come with a open mind and clean slate when dealing with clients that are not of the same race or nationality in order to best serve them.

i found this book to be a little too racist against white people. Like, not all whites are priveledged and this book seemed to suggest it. I also wish that it would have pulled info from other chapters that were relevant to the topics being read.
I did really like all the interactive questions/reviews throughout each chapter- they were nicredibly helpful for the learning process

Do you like cyborgs? what about hot guys stripping for you? A combo of the two? Oh dear lord. If you do you've got Johnny Ram. AKA Aries 7000. OMG he is so friggin hot your Kindle will melt. You've no idea what you're in for. Johnny is BADASS! SEXY! SWEET and SUPER HOT! Ladies, there's tons of action, tons of romance, lots of SEXY DANCING with one HOT cyborg stripper and an amazing female lead that kicks butt all the way to outer space. I loved this book. I mean I LOVED IT. Johnny rocked. Milly Rocked. The story was fantastic. Fast paced and didn't let down at any point. This is one hot read! Get your hands on it and enjoy.

So if there is only one thing Mina Carter does well (which she doesn't, she does multiple things extremely well...) is write great cyborg stories. I have to admit I wasn't a fan of the last sci-fi romance, Harem Mistress...but who cares? Aries Revealed gave me what I wanted from Lyon's Price which was ... more! Well thought out and plotted, there are so many things for a romance reader to love including a male stripper, mistaken or purposely mistaken identities, sizzling love scenes, and great foreshadowing that makes me eager for the next installment in the Zodiac Cyborg/Colonial Fleets series.

This was an excellent read. Well written, great plot, great characters and smokin' hot sex ;) Aries (aka Johnny) was so gorgeous I thought my kindle would implode! The heroine was kick-ass but vulnerable, a great combination. HEA after a satisfying amount of adventure, action and cyborg luvin. The sci-fi elements were also really well done, suprisingly unusual in this genre, which all too often descends into the "sluts in space mode". I thought Aries Revealed was better than the first in the series (Lyon's Price) but that was pretty good too. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait for the next in the series to arrive.

About the Author
John C. Peterson is a retired professor of mathematics at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, where he received the college's Teaching Excellence Award. In addition, he is a past vice president of the American Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and was co-director of the AMATYC project on Mathematics for the Emerging Technologies funded by the National Science Foundation. He also authored the project report, A Vision: Mathematics for the Emerging Technologies. Dr. Peterson's 90 professional publications include textbooks TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS and INTRODUCTORY TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctor of philosophy degree in mathematics education from The Ohio State University.

Robert D. Smith was an associate professor emeritus of Industrial Technology at Connecticut State University.

Personal Reflection

While reading this book I saw some key flaws in the leadership style that the organization I work for is implementing. The product we manufacture is based purely on creativity. It requires creative minded people and creative solutions constantly. However, it seems we have adopted the General & Soldiers leadership style in chapter five instead of the Producer& Creative Team in chapter four. I can see the reason for this is because we greatly desire "efficiency and fast deployment", however it seems to falter because of discrepancies over who is really in charge and tends to leave our creative minds feeling rushed and accomplishments seem to go unacknowledged. This breaks down not only the moral of our organization, but leaves us all struggling to reach goals we don't really feel are ours which steers us away from the collaborative effort that As One teaches. Hoping I can share these key concepts at work to revive our sense of teamwork and begin moving cohesively towards what we really desire.

How and why "As One behavior" can accomplish almost anything

There is so much to be said about what this book offers. Where to begin? Perhaps my purposes are best served by providing a series of five key points:

1. Mehrdad Baghai, James Quigley, and their three collaborators share what was learned from the a two-year Deloitte Flagship Project whose purpose was to examine the challenges of working together "As One." The project's scope was global, nourished and supported by best resources available from the US, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Australia, South Africa, and Japan.

2. Key questions are addressed. For example: What does it take to work As One? To succeed As One? To overcome barriers As One? To cope with failure As One? To become stronger As One?

3. Baghai and Quigley used an advanced forensic data analytic technique called a self-organizing map (SOM). Various maps (they use eight) "find relationships in data where the number of variables makes the analysis complex, and, they divide complicated data into groups of similar items so that you can understand what makes them similar.

4. There are eight leader & followers archetypes: (landlord & tenants, community organizer & volunteers, conductor & orchestra, producer & creative team, general & soldiers, architect & builders, captain & sports team, and senator & citizens. A chapter is devoted to each of the eight. Baghai and Quigley thoroughly explain how leaders and followers can coordinate individual action with a group's collective power.

5. Material about each of the two-part archetypes is organized within this format: Exemplary Individual, Exemplary Business, Key Characteristics of Leader and Team, "Is X the right model for the reader?", and "How to become a better X?" For example, Chapter 4 (Pages 126-159):

Archetype: Producer & Creative Team
Individual: Jerry Bruckheimer ("The Man with the Golden Gut")
Business: Cirque du Soleil
Key Characteristics of Leader and Team: Open culture, hands-off producer
Is it the right model?: Four reasons it could be great and four reasons to think twice
How to become a better producer?: Answer seven Qs such as "Does your culture effectively encourage openness and constructive criticism?"

No brief commentary such this can possibly do full justice to what this book offers. Valuable Resource

As One is a valuable resource for anyone interested in exploring different avenues of leadership. The eight different archetypes of leadership that the authors describe here are very distinct and powerful. They especially brought this to light with the use of famous leadership scenarios such as Gandhi (Community Organize and Volunteers), Jerry Bruckheimer (Producer and Creative Team), and Omar Bradley (General and Soldiers). These are just a few examples of the examples shown to illustrate these fundamental differences.

Intelligence analysts and investigators who use the powerful online search techniques taught by Michael Bazzell will welcome the just-released fourth edition of his book "Open Source Intelligence Techniques." But it’s not just for spooks and sleuths. A very broad spectrum of society can benefit from following this guide on how to extract open, often sensitive, information about others from the Internet through use of legal, many times unknown, databases, search tricks, and roundabout methods. No illegal breaking into accounts is advocated. Just knowing how and where to search is enough. Some, no doubt, will be alarmed at learning what’s “out there” about them. But others should find great benefit in learning how to find out the truth, good or bad, about the people, businesses and institutions that make up our world.

This is a rich update with nearly 40 pages devoted to extracting intelligence from the motherlode social network Facebook (1 Billion plus members and counting) in spite of roadblocks Facebook created when it changed its "Graph" search interface in late 2014. Bazzell has created a custom search tool that can be used free, by anyone, to conduct investigations on Facebook. He describes the impracticality of using smartphones with tiny screens and limited functions to conduct investigations that may need to be documented with screen captures, videos, and extensive notes.

A large section of the book describes free Windows “portable” programs that are appropriate for intelligence gathering. Also a portable edition of Firefox browser configured for online investigations. These can be downloaded to, and run from, a USB drive or digital memory card. [Investigators with Mac and Linux systems can run the Windows programs by using virtualization software]. Bazzell makes these programs and browser add-ons available to people enrolled in his online training program through his Inteltechniques.com website. However, readers of the book, if they want them, will need to assemble the materials on their own since the book only identifies the names and functions of the programs.

Bazzell draws on an 18-year police career in Illinois, where he was assigned to the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force, in revealing hundreds of practical techniques for extracting Internet intelligence about subjects who range from the lowest fraudsters and scoundrels to everyday honest individuals who are being checked for trusted jobs and personal or business relationships. Many will be surprised, others shocked, by the clear, candid explanations of how to legally crack telephone numbers and addresses; investigate websites, domains and IP addresses; identify and track individuals who hide behind aliases; geolocate people (determine their latitude/longitude coordinates) through their smartphone interaction with various social network sites (e.g. Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram, Flickr); use maps, street view images and satellite imagery in investigations; and conduct deep investigations of most anything that appears on the Internet. Of course, there’s more. There’s a good tutorial on basic search engine use (many people have no clue how to construct an effective search “query” and, therefore, don’t retrieve good answers). And there’s good coverage of the search engines themselves.The usual suspects – Google, Bing and Yahoo – are referenced throughout the book. But searchers in the future may want to also include the big Russian and Chinese search engines, Yandex and Baidu. One of Bazzell’s free custom search engines (on his website) searches all of these, plus 10 more simultaneously. He recommends using the Firefox browser.

This is a book that should be within arm’s reach of every investigator, particularly in the United States inasmuch as the Internet is heavy on US-centric resources. It represents a continuing 5-Star effort by Michael Bazzell.

I am a genealogist who spends most of my time searching for dead people. Recently challenged by our Sheriff's Dept Coroner to assist in finding families of unclaimed bodies. After going to genealogy classes for years, this book has websites and info that I have never heard of. Gives ways to work around the pay sites. A plethora of info, written so even a novice can understand, our entire group has been buying this book. Anyone looking for anyone would benefit from this book. Well worth the price. It is a go to.

A Useful Contribution–See the Table of Contents

I started the modern Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) movement in 1988, picking up where earlier pioneers such as Jan Herring, former NIO for S&T, left off. We are still fighting this battle. The CIA Open Source Center (OSC) is retarded — it does less than 10% of what could be done by a proper Open Source Agency (see tiny url forward slash OSA2011), and compounds their ignorance by classifying what they produce.

I *like* this book. If you have any doubts at all, use the superb Inside the Book feature that is one of Amazon’s signal innovations. If you believe — as the OSC believes — that OSINT is all about online surfing in English, this is a great book. It is a good complement to Ran Hock’s stuff, or Arno Reuser’s stuff, and Ben Benavides stuff, and I certainly also recommend the Super-Searcher series and anything by Mary Ellen Bates.

This book is a more sophisticated version of the book I wrote for internal government use in 1996 for the Joint Military Intelligence Training Center, and then again in 2000 for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but never to this level of detail, and certainly not with this superb structure nor its currency with all the new offerings from Google and others than did not exist when we started doing OSINT in the Marine Corps Intelligence Center in 1988.

The rest are top of the line values in doing serious research, generally online. There are no good manual on doing Human Intelligence (HUMINT), which is 80% of OSINT, something CIA and the FBI still do not get — they have not grown past the confidential information / traitor paradigm and cannot do outreach to the eight tribes that are open.
