The Author:

Edgar Giffenig was a highly ranked junior in Mexico and played for the University of Texas where he completed an undergraduate degree in business and a graduate degree in exercise physiology.

Starting as assistant coach at his alma mater, Edgar has been coaching high performance players for the last 25 years. He was a national coach for the USA, Germany and Mexico as well as a partner in two major tennis academies: Centro Mextenis in Mexico and International Tennis Academy in the USA.

He has been a speaker at many national and international coaches conventions (ITF, PTR, ITA, USTA, DTB, FMT) and is a partner in TennisGate, a company specializing in player development media.

Edgar currently lives in Connecticut, USA, where he teaches and coaches at The Salisbury School.

Outstanding Resource

Impressive. This is state of the art coaching and teaching by a master. The book was recommended to me by a professional player who described Edgar Giffenig as a "tennis MRI" because of the depth and accuracy of his analysis of all aspects of a player's game, from stroke production to match tactics and everything in between. Having read hundreds of tennis books, and as a clinical psychologist specializing in peak performance as well as a tennis parent, this one really is a STANDOUT. Beautifully organized for ease of use, there is probably $100,000 worth, at least, in lessons, workshops, etc. The drills, the advice, seem honed to the heart of what is most essential for player development and coaching. A very generous book/resource library. Outstanding.

Excellent book for tennis professionals who want to organize a successful Jr Development Program

Edgar brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to help tennis professionals organize a blueprint for success for their junior tennis development program. Edgar has experience working with and in the highest level of junior tennis in the world. Edgar started as an assistant coach for the University of Texas men's tennis team, then as one of the coaches for the USTA as a national coach for the top juniors in the United State. In Europe Edgar coached in the German Tennis Federation and Latin America created the Mexican National Jr. Tennis program for their elite junior players. Edgars experience as a top level player also allows him unique insight as to what really works and how to get others to the highest level of competition. Edgar has found that kids learn better and have more fun by playing games and matches. That does not mean that skill development through drilling is not important, but through the many examples provided in this book, drills should be structured to mirror point situations so that not only are their skills improving their tactical knowledge is improving as well. This is not a book that you read and put on your bookshelf but one that you read time and time again and use to create your own blueprint for a high performance junior program.

Edgar’s intelligence, love of the game, generosity, and sense of humor all went into this book, which distills his experience from a lifetime in the trenches as a coach and player. For those who don’t have the privilege of knowing him, this is the next best thing. There is something in here for anyone interested in tennis and what it takes to get better.

A little book with a large message

This book is distinctly small, not much bigger than the size of my hand and lighter than a medium-sized sandwich.

That may seem like a strange way to start a review. But I find the book's size a great plus. A book that is lighter than a sandwich is easy to take along in a pocket or purse, readily available whenever I have a few minutes free. In the grocery store line? Open it up and read one of the insets.

This is a great book for people who want to put positive psychology to work in their own lives, or those of family members, clients, or colleagues. It contains 22 short chapters starting with What is happiness? and ending with Where next? In between appear many of the prominent topics in positive psychology: savoring, resilience, gratitude, positive relationships, optimism, emotional intelligence, character strengths, mindfulness, mindsets, motivation, and so on. The chapters are short, on average 9 pages long. They are written in accessible language for the lay reader, summarizing points made by leading researchers and illustrating topics with brief but believable stories. Each chapter ends with a section labeled Things to Remember that brings the main points of the chapter quickly back to mind.

Numerous insets make it an easy book to dip into. They include:

- 50 activities labeled Try it now!

- 4 case studies, each a story of a particular individual applying one or more of the concepts in the book in a particular situation.

- 8 questions for contemplation labeled Think about it! Some are accompanied by surprising facts.

- 2 sets of Useful tips

This little book that fits so easily into a pocket or purse is loaded with practical ideas and interesting questions. It would be a good read for someone who has never seen positive psychology, for someone who wants to make some incremental changes toward well-being, or for someone who wants to share ideas with family or close friends. compre el libro por curiosidad y porque he lehido varios libros de esta autora muy buenos.aunque tenia mis dudas sobre este al tratarse de magia.me a gustado y mucho y lo he disfrutado.me han gustado mucho los personajes secundarios en especial los amigos de jack y su hermana celeste.el final fue lo mejor de todo con sorpresas sobre la madre de jack y su padrastro.jack queda herido y a punto de morir sus amigos lo llevan a una hechizera.abigail que siempre a amado a jack en secreto propone curarlo a cambio de que se casen.el acepta y cuando se recupera de su herida mortal se casan.a pesar se verse obligado a casrse jack se siente atraido por abigail.con ella aprendera a dar libertad y usar sus talentos que fueron suprimidos cuando era pequeno.jack enfrentara sus temores y enfrentara sus responsabilidades con exito junto a abigail.abigail se sentira aceptada y amada como mujer por jack.disfrute de esta lectura me gusto lo recomiendo.

Heartbreaking & Funny ♥

I fell in love with this book. Lennie, also called John Lennon by her friend/boyfriend and family, is grieving for her sister Bailey who died a sudden death. They live/lived with their Gram and Uncle Big. I really loved Gram and Uncle Big, they are some crazy cool characters let me tell you.

Through-out the book, Lennie writes notes, poems, thoughts on any piece of paper and lets them go, buries them, tapes them to things, throws them away in different places. Maybe someone will read them. I loved how the book was filled with these and underneath it would say where they were found.

Lennie doesn't want to get rid of anything of Bailey's. She even keeps her dirty clothes in the hamper. Lennie is also having a strange attachment to Bailey's boyfriend, Toby. She learns secrets about Bailey that she couldn't image. The secrets hurt her because she thought they were the best of friends. They lived in the same room together and were very close. Then things start getting out of control with Toby. They are both looking for an outlet from the pain. At least one day that all settles itself because it almost cost her Joe. Almost cost her sanity.

Joe is the new boy at school. He is beautiful and has beautiful brothers and everyone wants to be with them. But Lennie and Joe have something different. They play music together, they found each other in the music class. But, can Lennie let everything go enough to find love with Joe? I'm guessing you need to read the book to find out the whole story, but there is always a way . . .

I really enjoyed this book. It's about love and loss. It's about family and the people you meet. It's crazy and awesome. It's sad, not only because of the loss, but because Lennie and Bailey never knew their mother or their fathers. There are some revelations. There are tears of sadness and tears of joy. I'm glad I went on this journey with the characters in this book. It was magical in it's own way.

Quick Reasons: poetic, melodic, gorgeous prose; this novel tackles grief--and how differently everybody handles it--with aplomb; I admit, my heart might be just a little bit broken--but also taped back together; realistic, beautifully flawed characters; lots of great moral stuff going on throughout

Okay, okay, you can all get off my back--I finally did it. I FINALLY picked up--and read!--a Jandy Nelson novel. Aren't you proud of me? Huh, huh, aren't you?! Because you should be.

---Years ago, I was crashed in Gram's garden and Big asked me what I was doing. I told him I was looking up at the sky. He said, "That's a misconception, Lennie, the sky is everywhere, it begins at your feet."---

Now...I'm not going to say this was the most ground-shattering thing I've ever read, because let's be honest: it wasn't. There are, admittedly, many more grammatical issues than I expected--I mean, everybody raves and rants about this author, I figured I was stepping into something rather close to perfect. Except...there are mistakes. Quite a good number of them, which I of course paid attention to--in the midst of such poetic, gorgeously lyrical prose, it's hard NOT to notice when a mistake stutters into the mists of your reading. And each time, I had to stop, backtrack to the start of the sentence, and read it over again--just to make SURE the mistake existed. Sadly, this took a bit of the magic out of this book for me.

---But what if I'm a shell-less turtle now, demented and devastated in equal measure, an unfreakingbelievable mess of a girl, who wants to turn the air into colors with her clarinet, and what if somewhere inside I prefer this?---

BUT! This book? Really tackled grief, and the many different ways people handle it, with aplomb. The lyrical, musical quality of the prose only helped to bring atmosphere and mood to the story. The journey the characters are on--toward acceptance, toward each other--is beautifully rendered. There were several moments I had to stop and just THINK about what I'd read; moments I wanted so badly to step into this world, take the characters in my hands, and tell them everything would be okay; SO many moments I wanted nothing more than to shake sense into them. Of course, they're book characters--this isn't a possible thing to do. The desire was there, though, and so so strong.

These characters are beautifully flawed, and in the midst of a journey that nobody should have to handle...and yet everybody, at some point in their lives, DOES have to. Jandy Nelson took one of the most heart-shattering situations in the world...and made it relatable, made it beautiful, made it a lesson--not just for readers who've gone through, or are currently facing, such difficult times, but for everybody. There are morals to be learned in this read that are important, guys--perhaps not life-altering, but SO important in their own quiet, subtle way.

---You'd think for all the reading I do, I would have thought about this before, but I haven't. I've never once thought about the interpretative, the storytelling aspect of life, of my life. I always felt like I was in a story, yes, but not like I was the author of it, or like I had any say in its telling whatsoever.

You can tell your story any way you damn well please.

It's your solo.---

So no, this isn't the most heartbreaking thing I've ever read...but it's heartbreaking all the same, in a more subtle, poisonous way. The morals are so important, pertaining to grief, how okay it is to handle it in any way you need to--and pertaining to, if not necessarily moving on after a tragedy, at least figuring out how to pick up the pieces and, perhaps, find yourself in the process. Lennie's journey is one I think all readers can relate to...and need to read. I definitely recommend to lovers of contemporaries, romances, and novels with a wider-arcing purpose. This is one read I'm glad I didn't pass up.

I am just as enamored with Jandy Nelson's as I am with Colleen Hoover. And that is saying a lot. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I'll read anything written by her.

The Sky is Everywhere, literally. I cannot stop thinking about this phrase. Mainly because I have always pondered it. Where does the sky truly begin? Ms. Nelson has the answer, at your feet. Think about this for a while. When you say your dead loved ones are in the sky does that mean they are walking along side you, watching out for you, living your life with you? This whole book convinces me of that.

I love Lennon. I love Bailey. I love that they are so close even in death. Dreams change, people change, this book highlights that perfectly.

2 halves of one heart trying to fix what is broken. One heart becoming full again. Read it give it a chance it's not just some love triangle. Think deeper about what is happening.

As an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, I have successfully treated numerous people for mental/emotional concerns over the past 17 years. This very readable book raises the public's awareness of the wonderful possibilities Chinese medicine holds for mental/emotional healing.

Do I have patients and friends for whom pharmaceuticals work to help them cope with life better? Yes, and they are happy to take these medications for as long as they need. Are there others for whom pharmaceuticals have not worked and have even caused greater distress? Absolutely. For these people, there is hope in other arenas, and one of the aims of this book is raise awareness about that. What Chinese medicine can do is still so unknown to most people in our country, and I am deeply grateful for this book providing such useful and interesting information.

I really appreciated the author sharing his experiences, both from his life and from his practice. As a trained social worker, he has worked in the arena of mental/emotional issues for most of his life. He talks not only about fixing problems but also about balance, which is the foundation of Chinese medicine and lifestyle. If you are exploring options for treating mental/emotional problems, or are just curious about Chinese medicine, definitely check out this book.

The promise of holistic healing

As an LAc and an LCSW, the author has a terrific background for his exploration of the recovery from emotional imbalances. This book shows that addressing emotional imbalances on a deep and holistic level can lead to amazing growth and life satisfaction. The appendices by Thea Elijah, Dr. Stephen Cowen, and Heiner Fruehauf are a wonderful bonus. Case studies help illustrate the profound and positive impact of Chinese Medicine. Clearly Fudeman is a caring practitioner eager to share his experience.

A gritty autobiographical journey to Cape Town by Porsche, with entertaining characters!

Survival of the Quickest is an automotive journey by Posrche from Plymouth to Cape Town, with an abundance of challenges and humour along the way.

The book begins with a sense of impending doom, as the reader realises that Ben is about to be thrown into a an intense journey with a co-driver he is barely talking to. However, the journey throws up many a surprise as each of the characters deal with the intensity of the varied challenges faced in quite wildly different ways. Luckily for Ben and his co-driver, their strained relationship takes a surprising turn. The book strikes a great balance between the characters, colourful descriptions of the countries and their histories, as well as the trials and tribulations of the poor old Porsche. Being a female reader I was worried I'd have no interest in the inevitable breakdown problems with the car, however these were so random and eventful that it gave an interesting juxtaposition between characters, who either calmly came together to fix the problem (usually with the equivalent of gaffer tape), or the guy who wanted to throw everything in and have the poor old Porsche towed into Cape Town.

The author does a fantastic job of creating tension a great rapport with the main characters, to the point where I was nervous as to whether the car's problems would overcome the trip, as failure appeared inevitable. By the end of the book I felt like I'd been along for the ride myself. An excellent read, am crossing my fingers the author writes a sequel!

A well-written and well-paced classic travelogue.

Coombs and his friends take on an almost inconceivable task: driving from England to the southern tip of Africa in a high-mileage Porsche 944. Coombs ups the difficulty by choosing a a well-used, low-dollar 4x4 as his 'support' vehicle, a group of friends who don't get along, and a co-driver with whom he's having severe relationship difficulties.

This is a well-written and well-paced classic travelogue full of interesting observations about the places and events and people he encountered. Overall, Coombs spent more time talking about the areas through which he traveled; the difficulties of road, terrain and bureaucracy; the vagaries of road food in Africa; and the interpersonal relationships among his team than he did about the car and his attempts to keep it running. This is NOT a criticism of what Coombs has written, just an observation about what I was seeking as opposed to what Coombs he delivered.

I purchased this mainly because I'm a big fan of Porsche; I've owned three, none of them new and a couple of them well into their 'vintage' years. I get nervous when I drive to the next state over and here Coombs travels several thousands of miles crossing countries with poor roads, poor support and repair facilities and some of the worst 'governments' in the world. That took a lot of courage and self-confidence; and Coombs has my respect for even imagining such a trip, let alone pulling it off!

But, I was looking for something that focused a little more on the car. Of course, the car - while it didn't perform flawlessly (how could it?), performed well enough that it covered the distance with only a couple of significant problems. A testament to Porsche's engineering and construction prowess, more than to Coombs's self-admitted amateur mechanical abilities. This left Coombs freer to focus his book on things besides keeping the car moving along the road.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventurous travelogues more than to someone who likes Porsches.

Great! I recommend it.

The book is great, so far. I haven't finished reading it entirely. A nice touch would be some pictures to support the text. The main reason I bought the book was to see what problems the author ran into under extreme conditions. I also own a white Porsche 944 (1987). May I suggest that other readers run a search on the author's name to access pictures taken during the trip. Another feature I like is that the author gives insights on the various countries crossed. I did cheat and read what finally happened to the 944. It was not junked out, in spite of having been trashed druing the trip.

not what I expected

I must be reading a completely different book from the rest of the reviewers on here.I ordered this book with glad anticipation after reading a preview of the first few chapters. The preface and introduction hit the nail on the head. However, the rest of it turned out to be completely different from what I expected. I was looking forward to details of some personal experience of spiritual transformation by the authors. But instead it reads like a long, boring monologue on the spiritual achievements and experiences of well known Western figures such as Keats,Descartes, Tolstoy, Plato (who's 'ancient wisdom' is mostly borrowed from ancient Eygpt). It's quite technical and comes off as dry and academic as opposed to inspiring. However, it is very detailed and goes into depth about the whole process of spiritual development. It's also quite an interesting read in parts and contains many spiritual concepts that are corroborated in other books on this subject matter. Therefore, I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I would recommend it for a more "intellectual" as opposed to "relaxing" read.

After searching most of my life for answers to life's riddles, this book opened the flood gates for me.
I purchased many copies for like minded friends and the response was "This is a book who's time has come."
The authors invested much time and effort to translate esoteric teachings into every day language.

How marvelous for the universe to make sense. The authors really enlighten our minds towards a new consciousness; that there is a Soul, and how to have a relationship with that true Self. Very hopeful for these times.
